This car was for sale here on the forum a few months ago. Didn't take long to realize that it had a blown headgasket. It ran fine, but it was on the warm side and there were some bubbles in the coolant. Notice in the pics, the new coolant fan, relay, and the fact that the fan was hotwired to run all the time.

So what better time than now, to swap out the log intake for the newer style 1 piece? Here's a shot of my two sons taking part in the fun.

Apparently this isn't the original engine :( booo weak rodded 86 motor

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee39/blk86trbo/85%20Lancer%20ES/headgasketchange017.jpg

Picked up a new "smaller style" starter, because it's written that a mitsu turbo will interfere with the older larger starter.

If you have an automatic car with cruise, you'll need to pick up all 3 cables from an 88+ turbo car, as you can see the ends are different.

Other than some splicing with similar colored wires, the only "new" wiring you will need to run, are the two extra wires from the AIS motor at the throttle body. Simply run two wires into the passenger compartment and feed them to the logic module. In this instance, I also had to swap to a GLHS LM. All the info needed to perform this easy swap can be found at Donovan's Dodge Garage

I am REAAAALLLLY glad someone like you ended up with that car!! Its so unique and cool, i was worried it was going to slip through the cracks and end up in the hands of someone who would ruin it.

Great job so far, this thread brought a smile to my face!!

Thanks fellas...the plan for now is to just take it easy and treat it like a passenger vehicle (summer only). These turbo cars seem to last me a long time if I go easy on them

Other than my sons, I'd also like to thank my friends that gave some assistance...Ron, Jakub, and Karl. The extra hands were appreciated!

That looks really good with the lace wheels. Was it a swirl head with the correct pistons for an 86 engine?

The head in the picture is a 782 head.

Although, any kind of pistons will take him farther than that non-intercooled charge hose will. If its not going to be turned up past 14psi it hardly matters what pistons are in there.

Although, for the record my spirit is an 85 motor with a 782 head (slightly higher compression) and ive had it up to 17-18 psi without blowing up.. :p

My friend has an 87 Daytona Pacifica that someone had rebuilt the engine with 85 pistons and it burned the head out between two of the cylinders. It was a pretty crazy deal, and I figured it was because of the higher compression. This was a TI log engine though, and who knows how it beat on before he got it.

I had a 782 head get a chunk burned out between the cylinders in only a matter of a few miles after blowing the headgasket, and it had the proper pistons.

That could have been it, if I remember correctly it had an el cheapo headgasket.

When your blue Lancer was for sale, I remember thinking how nice it looked and what a good deal it would have been if it was closer

Thanks Ben. The lace wheels are my favorite factory wheel...I usually rotate this set on just about every car I pick up to see how it looks ;)

Yeah I took note of the head, and figured that if I was ever going to start running higher than stock boost, I'd at least be intercooling it. Would probably also remove the head to replace the mitsu with something bigger...as it sits, I'm running the wastegate straight to vacuum, so it's not seeing much boost.

That's the plan John...as long as the weather holds up, I'll be there with it. You gonna bring your new VNT car?

You are welcome sir. Oh, reminds me, I still have some Daytona brakes in my garage that I think belong to your rustbucket IROC... it's getting closer to putting that thing back in the salt so ya might want em.

yeah i threw an 85 short block into a 88 shelby Z with the swirl head. it boosted great and is fine for stock boost. i actually enjoy'd the little extra compression bump as it gave the 2.2 a little more grunt.

yeah I havent done much with it actually. i was planning to do a 5spd conversion but now I think im just going to opt for an auto since I dont really feel like doing all the swap work. I should have had this thing running months ago! lol....it needs a gas tank b4 i can even think about running it. wish my interior was as nice as yours!

btw: diggin the shelby stuff!

Figured I'd upload some pics of what I've been messing with lately. The engine in this Lancer has been "noisy" since I've owned it, which really isn't a big deal because it's not original. Sometime in the past it has been replaced with a weak rodded 86 TI. A couple weeks ago the clacker was pulled...today I was able to find time to pressure wash the engine bay.

Here's what's going back into it. It's an 85 TI, so it's got the heavier rods, plus it's the correct year. Turbodave pulled it from a lower mileage (60k or so) red GLHT, and Andy from Great Lakes Hot Rod freshened up the cylinder head and painted it a nice color. I'll keep updating as things go :thumb:
