View Full Version : Melting ign. switch connector

The title says it all. The wires in my ign. switch get hot enough to melt the connector and some of the wiring.

Car is a 90' TI Shadow.

I've done some looking at the problem and here is my current analysis.

1. It seems to effect the pink with white tracer wire which comes in from under the hood feeding power to the switch.

2. It also effects the black with tan tracer right next to it which feeds the rear defrost, blower motor and something else which I can't recall right now.

3. It heats up tremendously only when the heat is turned on. I actually haven't checked to see if it does it when I have only the R/ defrost on.

4. It isn't anything with the connector itself as I just replaced it with a fresh one and taped up any cracks or exposed portions of the effected wires. They both heated up in no time again.

What do I do to diagnose and fix this problem? I can provide wiring diagrams etc. upon request.

ETA: I really want to get this fixed as it eats ign switches if you run the heat, and I would like to do that this year. Joy would too. ;)

No big loads.

I think my multimeter will only do 10amps. I've never actually had to use that function before so I may double check it before I look again. I may need to pick up an actual ammeter.

Thanks, I'll do that. Seems like a good place for a short.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an amp meter?
