You have too high line pressure form the manual valve body. This could be from setting your pressure too high or sticky pressure relief valve. It then causes the pistons to drive the drum apart and breaking the tabs that hold the clip/ring into place which keep your clutches from coming out.

Typically when the failure happens, you are like 'what the duece', try different gears, etc and now will have burned up the clutches. Expect that you will need a full rebuild kit and clean or replace your valve body.

looks real familiar Frank, but the car is a bone stock '86 t1, no RMVB here.
is that the edge of the clutch drum?
sounds like it's a good thing i've got a bunch of spare hard parts:thumb:
and yes, i did try all the other gears trying to limp it home, made it about 1/2 block:D
i also found out that the u-joint in the halfshaft is just about ready to go:banghead:, this sucker is gonna get expensive:mad:

Sounds like exactly what happened... made it 1/2 a block. The second time it happened, i just turned it off and saved myself.

NAPA and Advance Auto parts sell a "heavy duty" U joint for our cars - $12 or so.

DO NOT get the one with grease fitting in the web - it will explode.

The Mopar U joint is $50+ at the dealer..... :(

ok, thanks. how long will the permanently lubed joint last?
i've seen some u'joints that had the fitting in the end of the bearing cap also,
would this be an option? shouldn't take much to D&T a hole in the end of one

The HD units from Napa have the zerk in the end cap. Those are the preferred ones.

got it pulled out this morning, wasn't too bad-i've done worse:D

can someone answer me this-why in the hell is there a ground bolted to the center of the trans case? doesn't this car have enough grounds?
i'll be pulling it apart tues. morning, then we'll see what blew up

I use a "brute force" u-joint for a '73 Dart w / 318 ci. They are a solid body, and made by Neapco. I run those on my '69 Dart also and with a trans brake and have not broken one yet.(1.35 sec 60" time)
The Bellville spring broke in the trans. The forward clutch probably had too much clearence, causing it to "bend over backwards". I usually set it for .025". But .018" to .030" should be good. I run 145 psi line press BTW.

the 2 pictures of the clutch discs are from the front clutch pack, the drum was ok on that one. why would they be bowed like that?
the rear clutch(the one that exploded) had pretty decent looking discs in it, just the clutch drum is blown up
looks like i need a band, too:D
planetaries look ok, i'm probably gonna use that 5 pinion unit i have out of the neon tranny.
so what caused this exactly? i know frank said a stuck pressure regulator, is this part of the governor?

thanks for the input so far

ok, i think i found the cause- both governor pistons were seized in their bores,
tight enough that i had to smack them with a hammer to get them freed up:eek:
Looks like i need to add a governor to my list of stuff:mad:

Incidentally, this trans has the 4 disc pack in the rear clutch housing, and three discs in the front housing:confused:
i thought a turbo trans had 4 disc clutches in both packs?

it should, look at the pics here http://66.78.24.116/Mopar%20Pages/Tranny%20upgrades%20detail.htm

make sure that you have the better front drum(the one that will fit 4 stock clutches) the place for the snap/wave ring is higher than the other one.

You can fit 5 factory clutches in the front if you use 5 steels for the 78-80 trans along w/ it then just get the right selective snap ring and ditch the wave ring

i"ve got 2 drums from a '98 neon 31th, they are both 4 clutch drums, and it looks like it's a good thing too.
the rear clutch is blown apart, and the front clutch drum is heavily scored from the front band shedding it's lining:mad:
man am i glad my co-worker gave me that neon tranny, i just wish that the diff.
carrier wasn't thrashed-pin holed are pretty wallowed out
