Okay from what Ive seen I should be able to swap 520 3.50 mainshaft and ring gear into 555 THEN put the entire assembly into 523 case? Yes, no?

Revsied shfiter rail setup..

That is incorrect. You would need to leave the 555/520 parts in either of the parent cases.

Ahh...at least I waited this time before tearing all three down.

Dont know about the 520 but it has been mentioned and verified by many that the 89 555 gearset is the same as the 90 568.

And thats why I figured it could be put into the 523 case as the 520 mainshaft and ring gear will go into a 555 and 523 will go into 568 then why not combine all three..

As the supply of manual transmissions continues to dry up I have a very strong feeling that mixing, matching and combining remaining good parts from many donors will become necessary to keep the ones still driving functional.

It depends if you have ALL of the parts as the shift rails and forks are different from the early to late trans'

I'd just build the 520/555 hybrid and be done with it, i like that notchy shifter better anyways.

Right. He would need to make sure that he had an 89' 555 for that to work due to the main shaft difference. Did the 89' 520s receive the same changes to the main shaft as the 555? If not, you won't be able to get the 555 1st gear and synchro on the 520 main shaft. If the 520 didn't receive the changes in 89' you also wouldn't be able to use it in the 520 case due to the smaller snout on it. I believe you can order the sleeve which fits over it to make it work though.

This is very true. I'm working very hard to make 525 parts a viable alternative to the 520 parts in the making of hybrid transmissions. It's just a little too expensive at this point to be viable.

I too think that the 520/555 is the way to go.

But then I would need to change out shifter and cables. I have a 88 555 and a 88 520 and a spare 523 case as well as a 563 shell, so you can see my dilemma. I dont mind going through the transmission becasue If im going to add a obx then I would like to know the trans is tip-top condition. Ill have nearly all wint to set it up and the nice part is Ill be able to get rid of two transmission if I can assemble this frakenstein hybrid..

I understand. It's rough trying to put together a trans for yourself these days. I remember passing by a ton of 520 and 523s in the yards. Heck, I even passed on a 91+ 3.50FD 523 in the yard that was already pulled once. There just isn't much out there anymore.

yeah just keep the 520 or 555 case.

the only way i could see you using the 555 stuff in a 523, was if you used the gear set on a 523 shaft. but you may have to use the reverse stuff from the 523 or a 568???

trannybuster does your spare 568 "shell" have a hole in it for the crank sensor for TIII cam gear? and is it complete with the diff housing??? i may be needing one soon....lol....

The 89 555 shaft is different than the 88.

Because the 89 555 got the updated shaft and shift forks, its shaft and gears, etc can work in the 523 case. Of course the input shaft also has to be kept with the gear set.

The other question is whether or not the old shift forks from an older 555 could be used in the 523 case if you swapped the whole assembly and put a race on the 555 shaft to enlarge it to match the case. There is a thread on this somewhere...

PAP here has a 523 and a 555, if I had the cash, I'd go buy them.

If the 523 is a 3.50FD go and buy it on credit. Pull the ring gear and shaft, sell it for a big profit.

Sorry Jugster no sensors mount.
