View Full Version : T2 swap into my '85 SC: Few last questions/concerns

I have an '89 2.2 T2 motor I'm going to be swapping into my Charger here very soon. So I can still use the L-body alternator harness, I'm planning on removing the alternator from my SC after I pull the motor to use. But the one thing I noticed was that the oil sending unit (I think that's what it is called) on my '85 is different than that on the '89 T2 motor. Will I be able to just swap the two so that I can utilize the factory plugs for it on the L-body alternator harness? Or for some reason is the '89 oil sending unit required to use on that motor?

My other concern is the water pump/housing. Again, I plan on using the waterpump and housing from my '85 motor on the '89 motor. I know they changed the style of the water pumps in '88 and just want to make sure I can use the '85 style on this motor. The whole reason I'm asking is because the l-body waterpump housing is specific to the l-body's as they don't have the extra nipple for the coolant line to the radiator like the Daytona's/Lebaron's do.

Thanks to anybody who replies, I just need to make sure about these things before I proceed with the swap.

Use everything from your L-body wiring harness. Did you add the two AIS wires at the logic module?

You can use your L-body water pump/housing. You will have to notch the common block's oil pan a little. You will see once you put the water pump housing to the block.

Nope haven't added the wires yet, as it's still running as a T1 for now. My main concern was with the alternator harness and the oil sending unit. Will the '85 style sending unit be compatible on the '89 motor?

Ok well that sounds easy enough, thanks Kevin :thumb:

When I was running factory style electronics, I used everything from the L-body harness. Everything worked fine.

Ok sweet! I'm going to start converting my extra harness over to GLHS style..maybe tonight actually. I'm going to go over it with new wire loom and replace all of that old, junky tape so it looks nice and pretty in the engine bay :p

The only difference in the 85 to 89 oil sending units (that I can remember) is they switched from 2 seperate components to 1. So you might have to take the fitting and sending units off your 85 motor and put them on the 89 motor, but it will work fine.

Cool, thanks Clay.

I don't think the '85 sending unit will fit in the '89 block. I recall that when I went to screw the '85 unit into my common block, it was way too small. Chris Faulk sent me an '89 unit and all my '85 stuff worked with it.

And the distribution block... Everything off the old engine onto the new. That's the way to do it!!

right, all of it. everything that screws into the engine block.

Ok, so just take everything from the '85 motor and slap it on the '89?

yep :thumb:.. Including the disrtibution block for the sensors

Except the cam, crank, int. shaft gears. Use the round tooth gears. I don't think the crank gear will work anyway.

Oh I know that, the timing belt is already on and tensioned. Thanks though Kevin :thumb:

Good. Show us some pictures when you get it finished.
