Looking for a good condition Lbody guage cluster for my 1983 Rampage. Prefer a tach, but will consider non-tach clusters if none with a tach can be found.

By good condition, the clear plastic lense over the cluster must be free of cracks or deep scratches.

Thanks,

Mike

Note that not all lbody clusters are compatible...

I think they change in 83 or 84 so you might have to change wiring to use an 84+ cluster.

Actually I think the later ones will not physically fit. Looks like the one for my '83 will not physically interchange with my 86 Horizon without some modification.

I have one that I just pulled out of an 85 SC. $25 plus shipping, PM me if you want it.

Does anybody know if this is will interchange with an '83?

If so, I will take it.

I had to swap the entire dash in my 83 to use the newer cluster, but it's very easy to do.

Thanks

You can make it fit with some mods, but the connectors will be different.

The wire connectors are probably the same.

I would take this as an opportunity to upgrade to the 88/89 dash wiring.

Or if you stick with the 40 pin bulkhead then just get the dash wiring from any '85 and later omni/charger. They should all have the connectors for the fuel pump in them. The charger usually has better speaker wiring than the omni.

Hmm. Not sure I can easily find that stuff anymore. Is my current '83 wiring not compatible with the engine harness I purchased from you?

The '83 harness is compatible with the harness you got from me. The '83 dash harness just isn't compatible with the 84 and later gauge cluster. :(

I might have an 87 interior harness. Let me check over the next couple of days. It was previously connected to the one you bought anyway but it came out many months later when I put in the 50 pin bulkhead. I just have to find it in my mess of extra wiring from the megasquirt harness I built.

The wire connectors were totally different when I put the '85 cluster in my '83. I had to remove the wires from the '85 harness, and put them on my '83

Why didn't I use the '85 harness? Because it had been messed with too many times, and it was easier to modify my '83, than to fix the '85 harness.

I'll have one from an 83 SC in a few weeks. Just need to find the time to swap dashes. The clock even keeps time.

Yeah... the clock on my '83 cluster is right twice a day...

Ooops Duh... I actually knew the dash connectors were different which was my original post on why they weren't compatible...

I was thinking wire colors are probably the same but I clearly said connections which was wrong.

Anyway... lame explanation I know... Sorry about that.

The bulkhead pinout is the same between all of the lbody cars up to '87. The only difference is that the early ones don't have a fuel pump wire and a power loss light wire.

After 85 or so they have connections for the power loos and fuel pump on the interior harness but the non turbo under hood harness doesn't have them.

Nope, 24hrs a day. Needs changed twice a year for DST.

Well I guess for simplicity's sake, I am looking for a 1983 or compatible year gauge cluster for now.

If later on I decide to swap the whole dash and harness, I will cross that bridge when I get to it!

Thanks all for your help!

Mike, I plan on swapping the interior next weekend (providing Mother Natural plays nice). If you're interested I'll post pics once I have it out.

I have a cluster, non tach, from an 84 Omni I'm parting. I'll get some pictures if you're interested.

Pics of the cluster. I just took the pics and its dark outside so it was hard to get a good shoot without glare from the flash. The car it came out of has 118k miles. I swapped in a dash from one that had less than 22k because my dash pad was cracked. Everything in the cluster works.

I also have the dash harness and non A/C pieces from the 22k mile car if you are interested.
