I have a 91 Spirit R/T, 80k on car, 1500 miles on new engine (car in sig)..just rebuilt the motor, new clutch,TOB,and pressure plate. ever since i had the car it has made the typical noise they all make only with the clutch out in neutral,1st gear under load, and 5th gear cruising. My other R/Ts made this noise as well but this one seems to be a bit louder and its annoying me:mad: I run 5W30 motor oil in the trans...so heres the question that im sure has been asked before....is there any way to quiet it down?? I run 5W30 motor oil in the trans...Will a heavier oil quiet it down? opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Transmission noises are so hard to pin down, it could be the main shaft bearing surface going etc.

If you drain it, check the oil for metal or fine bits? Maybe try Synchromesh or Redline MTL.

The 568 uses a seperate race in the main/intermediate shaft.

Yeah, like the repair I have done, but it can still go. Either way, just throwing out idea's and how hard it is to diagnose over the net.

That's interesting, I've never heard that in either of my r/t's... good video.

I was getting pretty much the same noise with mine (when it was running)... I expected it was worn bearings from being abused. This was the point at which I discovered that the 568 has no drain plug! Thought I was loosing my mind there! I'm guessing the heavier oil would band-aid it, but that a re-build would be the real fix...

That can be normal, its hard to hear but it can be what's called "neutral gear rattle" where the gears just bounce around and make noise, GM had that issue for years.

Barring that, time to tear it down and inspect the input bearing and main shaft bearing.

I run 5W30 motor oil in the trans...

Which?

Anything I've put a mobil product in in the last few years has sounded like it's thrashing it's guts out.

Yeah looks like that'll be the winter project:nod: What all is involved with doing that?..is it a pain?

That's generally one of the quieter oils for me, so you'd probably have to go to a 20W50 to get it any quieter, and then it would be balky in the cold.

That could depend on how many hard parts need replacing though, which are getting rarer and spendier.
