Friend of mine at work has a 89 Dodge 150 Long box. Truck has a 318 with A500 tranny. Tranny is shot. He would like to swap over to a 727 Torqueflite. Anybody fill me in on what would be involved with this conversion? Thanks to all who respond. G.P.

Depending on the case length, just a driveshaft I think. Externally they are the same, Kinda like 318/360.

Not exactly the same but case dimensions they are the same, But usually in 2wd the 999 came with a short tailshaft and the 727 came with a long tailshaft. Too bad you are too far away I have a 727 that is in really good condition except it needs a valve body.

Ooops, I meant a500 and 727

But the a500 has overdrive dammit Im confused.

The A500 is based on the 904 the A518 is based off the 727

904 is light duty 3 speed later models with addt'l lockup
727 is heavy duty 3 speed later models with lockup

A500 is "4" speed with electronic overdrive light duty
A518 is the heavy duty version.

Later on they changed the codes to 42RE and 46RE for the 500 and 518 respectively.

Why does he want to give away a gear? a 500 is a pretty much a 904 with a 4th gear.. and a 904 is pretty much a 727 with less parasitic loss.

Unless he is installing a used 727 and can do the whole swap for a few hundred bucks at most i dont see the benefit vs fixing the 500.

Anywho i think theres a good chance the swap will not take much since most of the 3spds ive see have the same length tail as the 4spds.

To swap backwards to the 727 he will need a longer driveshaft, transmission crossmember, and a transmission mount. Also, if the kickdown linkage pivots on the bellhousing, a 727/518 linkage will be needed.

Where was he when I wanted to trade for those parts for my truck?
