On a 1999 CTD... It's my father in law's truck...

He just called me and said the "can with the diaphragm on the turbo" is bad, and was told to repair it, he would need to purchase a WHOLE unit. I am assuming that the "can" is the wastegate.

Sounds like BS to me, is their any reason you cannot just get a new wastegate for these things?? I have not seen the truck, and it will be a few days till I see under the hood, but these things are completely foreign to me.

If the wastegate is replaceable with a new unit, can someone post a link to where one would be found? :o

I don;t think the part is available through the Dodge dealership, but I'm certain it can be purchased from Cummins (holset)

Further inspection is required. Usually the actuators themselves don't fail, but the bushing siezes to the shaft that is attached to the wastgate puck. In other words, the turbo should be removed for a proper repair or replacement. It's something to look into first due to the expense.

shadow88 did say it , take off the air intake to the turbo , then you will see the can , unhook the can at the swingvalve , then look if the swingvalve is stuck , if it is , take pliers and move it side to side until there is no resistance , if its not , you have to test the can with compress air (not 90psi) 30 psi will make it move if not the diaphragm is shot

Just wire it shut. Wastegates on diesels are for wusses. ;)
