Glue for plastic fuel cell (trap door install).

I would like to do a trap door on my 12 gallon sumped Jaz fuel cell.
When it gets down to 3 gallons or so (not exactly sure), you hit the brakes for a normal stop and can hear the twin walbros squealing.

I guess a lot of epoxies are fuel resistant. I know my roommate has to glue his pump to the bottom of his tank (weird vw thing) so he has done this before. Just thinking out loud here before I ask what he used.

I am just thinking to have one that sits right in front of where the sump angle starts. I guess i could add some lateral traps too for those turn things. Maybe surrounding the sump would be the best idea. Not sure what material I would use for the hinges that would like to hang out with ethanol and petrol

I'm guessing the trick would be make something that fits through the bung. My suggestion would be a cup that the pump stands in that has flapper valves around the bottom that let fuel in but not out. Have the return line dump the fuel into the cup. This should keep the level in the cup high enough to maintain pressure during "maneuvers" when the tank level is low.

I believe the "fuel pump module" in PT Cruisers, and probably some other cars, works like this. With a little creative imagination you might be able to adapt one of these modules to your cell.

Glueing the pump to the tank seems kind of "hillbilly" to me. If you do the module thing you could probably cut another hole in the top of your cell and hang it from a plate.

Glueing the pump to the tank is a VW thing.


I only have external fuel pumps. The cell is a Jaz Pro Street 12 gallon with sump in the rear (3" drop with an angle) to help feed the twin 8an outlets.

So i just have to surround the sump to keep the pumps from sucking air when the tank gets low. Its fine when accelerating but you can see that its not friendly to downhills and stopping.

I don't know if its possible to make trap doors that work well enough for a long freeway downhill. I have a functional fuel gauge (see the black sending unit in picture) so theoretically I shouldn't run an empty tank but I sorta figure I don't want to run a full tank all the time either since the cell is 12 gallons (only 2 less then P body stock).
I would not have gone with a fuel cell but I need room for my Chevy 10 bolt rear axle sometime in the future for the AWD conversion.
