Needed a cheap ride to get around with well i work on my truck. Found this little gem on Craigslist for $275. The guy selling it had it given to him from his mom and he didnt want it. Had the paper showing that she bought it off the dealer lot Jan 89, 2.2 turbo, power everything, and everything works, even the lights in the ash try and glove box. Only has 88,xxxkm on it. Had a blown head gasket, buddy donated one, $30 for some bolts (wanted studs but the speed shop was closed), and few hours it was back togther. But if you happen to have the key on the end of the cam for the cam gear fall off and you didnt notice, this little job takes the hole day. On with the good stuff. Big thanks to my buddy 4cefedomni, think hes more excited for the car then i am lol. Picked up a boost controller, intercooler, 2.5 injectors, cone filter off him this morning. Local guys got a NGK wideband for sale i hope to pick up this weekend. Just need a boost gauge, Talon BOV, and some couplers.

What else should i do to it? going to swap rims with my Daytona and cut its coils. It just needs to go fast in a straight line, and to work and back eveyday. Might gut the intrior also, every 100lbs is about a tenth lol.
The day i brought it home.

I would get a performance computer for it.
Some Slicks, 23.5 x 8 x 15.
2.5 to 3.0 inch exhaust with a cut out.
Get the boost up to 14 psi if you are staying with a 2 bar map.
Instead of 2 extra injectors, I would run some + 20's along with AFPR.

Chuck

BTW -- nice looking car.
Keep us posted on your mods and WELCOME to the Forum !!!

Car seems awful nice to gut the interior.

So you lose 100 lbs and gain maybe .1 Why not just turn the boost up a bit instead?

loud sharp insides are no fun...

Don't cut the coils.... these cars ride terribly like that. If you want lowering springs go with an eibach kit THEN cut a coil to drop the car an inch.
The car looks really clean. Gutting the interior on that car should be a crime... but its your car.
I would keep it just the way it is as a bad --- sleeper. Dropping it an inch with those wheels and the hubcaps missing is perfect for a sleeper. Then just SCREAM by people. Maybe an eventual 5 speed swap?

Oh, your welcome too,  :o lol.

DON'T gut it, the kill factor is mucho better that way.

I have ton's of cam keys, shoulda had Don call me. Your welcome on the wideband too, ;)

I've got some couplers, hose, and a modded Talon BOV if you need.

You know what to do, we'll burn you a cal, 3bar, +20's, exhaust, fuel pump, my wires, IC it, and go rape some ricers, :hail:

You gotta get it ready for Aug 27th, we'll have a mini BC SDAC meet, :thumb:

I'm with everyone else, don't gut that car. It has way too nice an interior to gut, it has all the power options and everything works! do you have any idea how rare that is for these cars? there are no rips or stains anywhere and the trunk looks like it's never had anything in it.
As for power, you have a lot of support around here to help you build up a good reliable street car out of it that will shame the ricers:evil:

I also say DONT gut it. If you care that little about it you'll probly get tired of the car and pass it on, let the next guy get a CHANCE to care about the interior, at least!

Also, ive cut the coils on half the cars ive ever owned and never had one ride like crap (except the one time i had my aries so low it was bottoming out the struts). It'll ride just fine as long as you've got good dampers on it.

Welcome to the site.

Don't gut the car.

Throw an MP computer in there and play with that for a while.

Did any of these cars come with a rear sway bar? or am i looking at making somthing fit? A van front sway bar is bigger right? Whats a MP computer? Buddy has an Ostrich that i could borrow to tune if needed. Going in tomorrow morning to aircare, if it passes will get straight piped with a glass pack of two tomorrow.

You need to get one of the big front sway bars off of a Daytona, Lebaron etc. The van bars will be too wide. These cars did not come with rear sway bars. There was a bar welded into the trailing arm though.

I was referring to a Mopar Performance computer. It is probably the best first place to start until you get an intercooler or some such.

You bring up an excellent point. I believe that I have only seen two Caravelle turbos.

IVe welded a plate onto the bottom of the rear axle to stiffen it. You can also exhaust clamp a plate on, i think.

Also, the better handling cars like the shelby daytonas, etc got a bigger torsion bar welded into the axle from the factory. Its not really feasible to swap bars between axles but it IS fairly easy to swap the whole axle out for one with a bigger bar.

Started on the intercooler install this evening. Its a stock volvo piece, fits decent upside down. I know it isnt the best flowing unit but it fit the budget really well. If i decided to go bigger hp ill upgrade to a better flowing alum peice later. No pics cause ther wasnt really anything to look at yet. I started another thread but had a mixed answer. For being 95% stock for now, with a mitsu and 2.25" S/V should i run 2.5 or 3" pipe? probly have it stick out the drivers side infront of the tire. Sounds like a 3" starts to get a little tight, will i have problems if the cars lowerd at all?

cordes
08-03-2010, 12:53 AM
You won't get a 3" DP on there very well with the 2.25" SV. You really need to go with a bigger SV to get the 3" pipe in there IMO.

Tons of guys go 3" out the side though.

Thats what i figuerd. 2.5" it is then. Is there bigger SV for the mitsu? i know the garretts came 2.25" and 2.5". doing any turbo mods arnt in the cards rights know, but if i get bored this winter buddys almost got me sold on doing a Super 60 setup. Thanks for the help guys.

Mitsu came 2.5 in 89 but I don't think the 3" SV fits, just go 2.5", that will be all you need for now, :thumb:

I know that my 90' Shadow came with a 2.5" DP, so you should be able to scare one up for very cheap.

The Volvo jobs will go up to about 18PSI from what I've read. That should make for some fun for a while. Heck, at that point I would be more worried about keeping an auto trans together anyway.

I don't think I have started another project log for this car. I might have mentioned it in my omni one though.
This car came dangerously close to being entered in a figure 8 race, but I offered to buy it from the previous owner before that happened. When I got it, it was completely stock. I've since added a 2.5" exhaust, a tII turbo and an eBay intercooler with a couple extra injectors plummed in the IC pipes. And the last race of season it ran a 13.78@96.96 at 17psi.

It's only had one race so far this season and the best it did was 15.2@87 at 12psi.
It's got an issue with the boost right now, I don't know if it's a wastegate problem or a boost leak but I can only get 12psi out of her no matter what I do

Nice car. And it's got the ultra rare 88 kcar smec wiring harness that's plug and play for any earlier kcar.

Nice car. And it's got the ultra rare 88 kcar smec wiring harness that's plug and play for any earlier kcar.

??what's this about the harness?
Are you talking about the entire cars wiring harness? Or the engine bay harness up to the bulkhead connector? There is a local guy with an 87 woody wagon with a log t1 that's wants to swap in a blow through style intake and get a smec.

The local wreckers had 2 caravelles in there that might still have harnesses he could use.

GLHNSLHT2
04-26-2011, 10:49 PM
Just the engine harness. The 88 turbo kcar harness is backwards compatible with the earlier kcars. So New Yorker, Caravelle, k-lebaron, etc. You can't do this with Daytona's or Lebarons or Hbodies etc. They moved the connector and reversed the sexes in those cars.

4cefedomni
04-26-2011, 11:38 PM
So to get the 88 kcar smec harness to work in an 87 would you have to swap pins on the bulkhead connector, Or is it a plug n play type deal?

Right on! I'll be sure and pass that info on!
I'm surprised that its that easy, with the logic module in the passenger compartment I would think the harness would be way different than the smec harnesses.

Nice vids Dick!!
The 16.75 run was the one where I backed the timing way off to see if my boost would come back
