My wifes boss has a caravan (2001) that a chipmunk ate some of the wiring harness. They quaoted him $5100.00 to repair this. Now the insurance company wants to total it. This sound like a crazy price to replace the harness. Is this in line or should he take it to another dealship?

What/where exactly was it damaged ?

I could easily see a new complete underhood harness costing a couple thousand dollars if thats what the dealer is calling a repair by simply replacing the entire harness and not splicing everything back together ?

Might be time to hit up the junkyard and pull a replacement one.

Under hood harness runs in the neighborhood of 1800-2200 for the harness alone. Normally battery acid gets into the harness and causes all kinds of weird issues. I don't even attempt to fix a harness that has battery acid in it. You can't see the enemy.

Now, a varmit getting in the harness, that can be fixed with time and patience.

BTW $5100! If it is just the underhood harness (headlamp to dash--everything except the intake harness), that is not more than an 8hr job. I have seen insurance pay up to 10 for this harness, but $5100. That's one screaming high labor rate if it's just the underhood harness.

I'm not really sure about where the critter ate the wiring. But I thought that was a crazy repair cost. I'm going to tell him to get a second quoat. Thanks for the responses.

I can change a shadow/daytona/spirit engine harness in less then 2 hours easy and im a amature backyard mechanic. is the minivan really that much harder?

You take off the fascia, remove inner fenders, battery tray, knee blocker, PDC, headlights, etc. It's not that hard of a job, just involved.

You can't compare a new car to an old car, its like comparing your car to an F1 car. New cars have miles of wiring, multiple computers, its stupid, :(
