So, the shift knob on the A555. It's alright, but it dates the interior. I don't like aftermarket shift knobs. I like the look of the shift knob on the 568 and would like to do something similar, but there are road blocks.

Can anyone think of a shift knob like the 568s that will thread onto the 555s shifter?

take the foamy one and cut out the plastic center. then attach overtop of a pre 90 shift nob.

What about thread pitch? Does anybody know what the thread pitch is on the 555 shifter?

Hmm....

That gives me an idea, leather wrap the factory knob. Then again, gear shift pattern would be hard to take care of.

I spoke to TFB about getting some shift knobs machined....

If we could agree on a good design and get like 10 people interested he would make them he said:)

So, the idea is that it would be metal? I've been down that road, don't want another metal shift knob. If it were wrapped in leather with the shift pattern stamped on it I would buy that.

As for design, that really depends. I think the factory knob looks about as good as it's going to get with the rubber OEM boot. They're both dated looking, they fit with each other. Anything else I think will look out of place.

However, if you'd be pairing it with a leather shift boot like I will then I have a couple of designs I like.

Yeah, I'd agree. I think the top one would look right at home in our cars. That's exactly what I'd like to find. It's the stock shift knob out of an Evo 9 I believe, but the thread pitch is different.

Edit: I wonder if it would be possible to drill that out to thread onto the 555 shifter?

Hmmm....I wonder if TFB could do the knob and have mopar318 wrap it in leather?

That would be nice, then the shift pattern could have reverse in the right spot.

it would be quite hard finding one with the correct shift pattern....

Oh, for sure. I would be willing to ignore that, but if we can have one made that's a direct fit with the right shift pattern I'd be all over that.

ill call ed in the morning and ask him about covering a stock knob.... if you get a universal b&m T shifter they have interchangible threads maybe those would work? or drilled out and a set screw?

The T-handles come with thread inserts but the wrong ones for our cars. I used one of the smaller inserts and epoxied it in. Then drilled and tapped it.

Polygon what are you using for a leather boot?

I agree the evo one looks like the right one, it almost looks like a baseball.

Well, the boot is going to be a combination. I had a leather boot made locally a long time ago. Now I just need to fab it up. What I'm going to do is cut the stock rubber boot, leaving one ring at the bottom. Then I will pull the leather boot over it. This is so it will have something to push the boot out at the edges so you can't see the cutout for the sifter. Then I will use the factory mount to hold them both in.

I'm using a shifter and one cable from a neon on my 555. Had to change the ball mount on the trans to a stud with a groove to make the cable work. Now it's easier to get parts.:thumb:

Got an idea to wrap the shift knob. Make a 1 foot long piece slightly tapered. slide the cover on and pull until the taper becomes tights on the knob. Fold around and glue the edges and trim.

Okay that may sound confusing, but it should work.
