View Full Version : Removing wiring harness

Even with a set of FSMs, I can't seem to find the connector under the dash for the life of me. I am clearing out the engine bay for painting on my CSX and can't seem to get under there.

I'm not a contorsionist so am half tempted to remove the driver seat so I can lay on my back better. I swung open the steering column cover but that didn't help much. Any tips to un plugging the underhood wiring from under the dash? I don't want to make it harder than it needs to be but have never removed it before.

Not a very good pic, but here's what I have to work with. The goal is to remove the brake booster and wiring. Both are prooving to be a PITA.

Thanks again!

would a picture of a unplugged one help?

its not one connector its a bunch of small ones on the p-bodies.

remove the driver kick panel, should be a few plugs in there, might be one behind the e-brake assembly. uh what else brake light switch, ebrake light switch,,, just follow em back.

would be best to have the steering column out of your way as well. hell take the dash out, its 5 10mm on the top and 2 on each side and 2 in the centre bottom. easy as pie.

I wouldn't hesitate to pull the seat. Makes things a lot easier. Like racoon said, it's not one big bulkhead like the older cars. The harness comes through a big rubber grommet in the firewall, and I think there's six or seven (more?) connectors under the dash for everything. If you can get your head in there far enough, you should be able to see where it comes through. Just follow it down and pull each connector. Have a small flatblade screwdriver handy, some of the connectors like to put up a fight.

Is that a 50 way job on there like the Omnis? If so you need to unbolt it and then it will just pull out. Otherwise, you may as well pull the dash if it is your first time IMO.

P body uses several smaller connectors. Just look up under there next to the clutch pedal and parking brake pedal for where the wire bundle comes into the car, cant miss it.

pull the seat, makes the job 10 times easier
what i do is i pull the rubber boot on the outside out to get some light on the wires coming in and then just followed them that way

Pulled the seat on the 91 shadow 2.5 T1 I just parted. There were three large plugs and two small ones if I remember correctly. Much easier than the contortionist approach.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I didn't realize how simple pulling the seat was. 3 bolts in front and 2 nuts in back and it was out. Once that was out, I could easily reach the connectors. I will post pics of the "under dash" end so there is a reference to others what a 89 CSX has. There were about 8. 3 to the steering column/ignition, 3 to the connectors near the fuse box, and 2 by the clutch/brake.

Here are some pics.

The far connectors in this pic goes to the steering column/ignition. The close group on the left go to the connectors near the fuse box. The black on near the grommet goes under the clutch pedal.

I'm honestly not sure where this one came from. I must have forgotten one and when I was gently pulling it out, it came free. Any ideas where it goes?

Jake,
My guess is that it came from the ebrake switch. That is tucked against the kick panel and hard to see.
