Alignment today and also hope to get a few runs on the Dyno to see where she's @ on 17 and 22 psi.

Update: 262 and 283 @ 17 psi, I'll have to double check data but I think it was about 10.3 afr so a little rich.

Those are great numbers for such low boost. And with that A/F there is a good bit of power left in it before cranking up the ebc.

Looking forward to seeing it run!

Thanks. Leaning her out is no problem but I'm hoping maybe we can figure out the boost issue before the drags.

Ha, that's my Electromotive 2 stage launch setup. Sounds like a couple 44 magnums. It's set at 6k right now and it's even louder when set at lower rpms. I should've woken the hotel up by engaging it in the hotel parking lot :) They would've called the cops for sure.

It wasn't that close. I ran a 13.3 at 104 mph on street tires and a full interior!!! Now you are going to push me to get aDBB too. Excellent I need the motivation. That being said. Great times on street. So glad u got the pop pop figured out. If only 2 days earlier you might have broken 60 at the auto x.

Tempting but you'll have to take on the Bimmers without me in July. Let's look at something later in the year. VIR might be good to run in November. Weather should be right for the turbos.

The 11" big break setup awaits you. Good times at Sdac indeed. Hope to do it again next year.

Thanks to Eric, Brian and especially Spiro for getting Jules back in time for the drags. The fix held up until the last run of the day. Pat was driving and the temp bushing fell out at the starting line after one of Pats awesome 2nd gear burnouts. But at that point it had already had 9 runs or so.

Heh, sorry. I have talked to Slowe about stuff like a cage for my car. He'll be building a motor for me and while the car is up there, I'll probably put a cage in it while I'm there.

And yes, the plan will be to build it for autocross. Plan to give your car a run for it's money. :) Thanks for the compliments Mike!

Sweet. Anytime he's touched my car it's only gotten better. Get as much done as possible and fatten his bank account in the process, that's my theory!

I'm going in for a gt30r, cage and some small stuff. At this point, besides putting a widebody kit on the omni, I'm running out of possible mods. Dare I say this is the last of the mods and from then on its maintenance?

If you haven't done so already. Let me recommend a track day or weekend. You'll find your cars true weakness (s) and have a blast while doing so. I'm trying to setup my car as a triple threat. Track Day Toy, Autocross Competitive and Drag Racing fun. While not great at either of the 3, it keeps my motorsports interest peaked.

That's one for Satin Black. Other choices are Red, Silver or Charcoal Gray. Brian won't allow his cages to be painted lime green or orange so those are out.

11-19-2012, 09:23 PM
Pretty much everyone is right. Going with Rustoleum Hammered Black which from all reports should come out Charcoal Gray. Using either a roller brush or roller foam and a paint brush in the tight spots.

Spraying it on would be far too messy. Also from what I've read, the Hammered Black from the spray can comes out blacker and doesn't give you good hammer effect that brushing it on does.

We'll find out this Wednesday.

zin

Seems like a good choice, should not be distracting and the hammer finish should keep the inevitable scratches and such from showing too much. Looking VERY good BTW!

I was going to 2nd this, but I like your idea of the hammered texture.

I'm gonna have to do that for #493 I'm fixing up. Now do other steering wheels just bolt to it? I have a grant wheel in the race car and it has a steering wheel release kit on it but it's the anti theft kit. It requires a key to release the wheel. I like the quick release better.

Test driven yesterday and with the gt30 @ 18 psi it was described as "running like a raped ape".

At 10 psi could roast tires at will.

Said turbo hit hard and believed to spooled faster than the super 60.

So looking forward to sliding in the drivers seat. Is Cecil open? :)

New radiator from all accounts looks to perform well above the stock levels.

Charcoal colored ultrasuede arrived. Will be covering (new to me) 1 piece door panels for sure and probably the plastic pillar trim pieces as well. Will be putting carpet back in and getting the interior cleaned up a little.

My existing vinyl door panels will be for sale if anyone is interested. I had them originally finished in light gray and dark grey to match dash and seats. Then when Troy installed the SRT4 seats, I left the darker gray at the top and painted the bottom portion of the door panels black.

Turbo swap had no surprises in store. The gt30 with the chrysler housing allowed Brian to use the same downpipe with no modification. Thank you Chris!

Hi Mike,

Glad to hear things are working well with the new set up. :thumb: I haven't been following this thread to closely. Are you using our Cast Iron header with the Chrysler style GT30?

I can't ask Brian to be a master builder AND a photographer. I'll post a bunch of pics when I pick her up.

Yes, original setup was TU cast header with Super 60. So out with the Super60 and in with the Chrysler housed GT30. Due to the TU modified GT30 it was rather uneventful (per Brian).

You and me both but it sounds like its not even a fair comparison. I do have another chrysler housed gt30 sitting on the shelf just in case u want to take it off my hands.

Just before sdac it dyno'd 260 hp and 279 ft lb torque with what appears to be a lot of area under the curve. I did log those, runs so i'll look and see what psi that was but iirc were talking 16 lbs.

So in the Spring, we will hit the dyno and before we change the tune we will make a baseline run for turbo comparisons. Im hoping for 300 at 17 lbs.

I'll give you a buzz tomorrow.

Ha, yea right.

1st: Bought a new one from Chris with a Ford housing and didn't I trade you for one with a Chrysler housing?

Sold that turbo to JohnL in California

2nd) 6 months after the build with the super60, I bought a new one from Menegon and that's the one Brian installed.

3rd) Then last week I bought one, also with a Chrysler housing, from Lynn in California.

Plans are to install it into a dedicated race car but haven't figured out what the dedicated track car will be.

Daytona, CSX, 87 GLHS.....too many options.

I'll probably be at the lower hp recommendations of the gt30 (350 ish) but I think it handles up to 550 hp or so. If your planning on something in the 500 range, I'd think it would be an even better turbo for you...but ask Reeves. I think he had a gt30 on his car or a while and took it off. Off the top of my head I can't remember his reasons for removing it.

Your comment about it spooling quicker than an S60 with basically a back to back swap has me wondering if I should of gone with a GT35R instead

Now i'm late to the party as a lot of you have fast cars.......but....

Im amazed at the difference a turbo only change made. With the super 60 the car just ran out of power in the 6k range. Now it pulls like an animal with no end of power band in sight. It feels like i need to shift just to keep my valvetrain from exploding.

With super 60' car dynoed at 261 at 17 psi.

With the dbb TU tranny buster is it posible to pick up 60 hp from a turbo swap pushing the same boost? It sure feels like it.

I guess I'll find out when we do some fine tuning a few months from now at Brady's.

I'm sure Mike will chime in here, but I can give you my impressions after driving it yesterday ripping it 1st through 3rd a few times. It really starts to sing at about 4k. It obviously starts to ramp boost up before that, but it hits hard just above 4k. I ran it through 6500 in 3rd and it was pulling hard. I drove it once with the S60 and if I recall correctlty, the S60 spooled a bit quicker but it didn't hit nearly as hard or hold power nearly as well up top. When I drag raced it at SDAC, I was shifting when power was beginning to fall off, which was just over 6k.

I have always had good luck with the Magnecore's but with the Electromotive system low resistant wires are not recommended, apparently the way the coils work is that the spark leaves the coil, goes down the plug, travels thru the head and back up the other side of the coil, that's why it also fires on the exhaust stroke and something in the ECU needs to read the resistance. The Electromotive coils are very powerful so the engine won't notice a cheaper set of wires, they will have to be replaced sooner because of burn-out tho.

Outboard boat engines. Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury were using wasted spark with capacitive discharge ignitions back in the early 70's.

If you want to see some really cool technology, just a notch or 2 lower than F1, marine outboard engines are where it's at (or used to be anyway). Those engines are made to run 100% throttle near redline for their entire life.

Chrome plated cylinder walls, wasted spark and capacitive discharge ignition (think MSD), loop charging (to introduce swirl and tumble to the mixture as well as for 2-strokes getting more charge in the cylinder), offset cylinders, very high pressure fuel injection and fuel atomization techniques, ect. These were all used in production outboard engines and is OLD technology to them!

Some of this stuff we are just now seeing in the car industry as standard and not some racing "secret".

It's been a busy week for buying and selling cars, trailers, guns, ammo, scopes, etc....

Sold the 87 S to strang3majik here on the forums and a few hours ago I sold the M3 to a great dude and his wife from Newport News VA.

In regards to the M3. What a beautiful and awesome driving car! I will get another one eventually. Either a low milage e36 or a run of the mill e30 M3 that I won't feel bad driving. Anyway, the reason I'm selling my extra toys is so I could buy this new tow vehicle.

White / Black Shelby Dakota towing a Black GLHS on a bad --- Aluminum trailer with custom Carroll Shelby racing Logo's on the side (pictures of this to come later) ....is it race season yet? I'm ready.

I also got approval from the previous owner and Brian for pulling the original 318 motor and installing a late model 5.7 Hemi. That should get me down the road and over the mountains with car and trailer in tow. Initial plans are for a winter 2013/2014 swap.

More pics of truck to come....it also has not 1 but 2 signatures from Carroll Shelby.

A huge thanks to Pat Culkin for connecting me with the seller.

Def. brakes are #1 on the list. Trailer is only 500 more lbs than a tow dolly thou,so its mot like my old trailer weighing at 2400 lbs.

Welcome to the family, #556.

This is a 2 owner truck until my purchase today which made it a 3 owner truck. It was originally purchase by a gentleman in California name Marco. He turned it into a drag racer with NOS. According to the paperwork that came with the truck, he ran low 14's with this setup. The pics are really bad but you see the decals lower left on the cap lid? Those are Marco's kills from back in the day. The words Ford and Chevy with X's marked over them.

In 1997 he was looking to part with the truck and ran into Dr. Barry Miles. Most of you know Barry as the owner / driver of the Silver Bullet.

It didn't take long for the two of them to work out a deal....Barry traded his 1987 GLHS for this truck and both parties were pleased with their new acquisitons.

Barry used #556 as a tow vehicle for the Silver Bullet from 1997 to 2006 and logged a little over 100k miles in her.

As you can see from the pictures, he kept it in amazing condition. In 2006 he had the truck repainted and new graphics were installed.

Around 2007 he purchased a new tow vehicle and retired this Shelby Dakota to the garage.

As some of you know, I had put out a feeler wanted ad on the SDAC email list for a White Shelby Dakota. Since Barry "doesn't do email (or cell phones)" I get a call from Pat Culkin saying Barry has a white one....

I immediatly call Barry's home phone after hanging up with Pat. Barry and I speak the following day and agree to meet on the upcoming Saturday.

I took the short 45 mile trip to Barry's house and he backed her out of the garage. He started to go into detail about what was done to the truck. I immediatly interupted him and said, that sounds great, I can tell you right now, It's going home with me.

It was love at first sight and as soon as i sat in the truck, I just felt well....cooler.

As she sits inside my warehouse, what does the future hold for #556? It will probably be ued as my metal scrap hauler and firewood hauler..haha..seriously thou.

Will it be a tow vehicle? Will it be a show truck? Willl it be a Cars and Coffee cruiser on Saturday's? Will it get a Hemi conversion? Maybe all of the above?

Only time will tell and I imagine if I listen closely the truck will tell me what it's going to be.

I apologize for the bad cell phone pics, I'll take some pics with a real camera soon.

If you look hard enough, in the picture of Barry with his truck, you can see a white fender in the barn....can anyone guess what car that is? I'll give you a clue, we all love to look at them!

I know! I know! It's the next car I hope to be helping restore. :-)

I'm so glad it worked out the way it did. There's a lot of history with that truck, so I'm thrilled to hear it's staying in the family so to speak. That and I've always liked the work he did with that truck. It's just a bit different here and there which to me, makes it that much cooler.

As for what you do with it, you know my vote. The only think to make that truck cooler to me is to give it some modern Hemi love.

Thanks Alan, I have Marco's notebook from when he was building the truck so i'll have to check. I know he had bucket seats and several engine mods that Barry swapped out back to stock.

Im not sure what other (if any) mods this truck has in store but it sure is fun thinking about all the options. Viper engine, srt8, 5.7 hemi, or keep the 318.

That's pretty awesome. As Clint Eastwood said, "a man's got to know his limitations" I would be a lot better off if I would stick to mine. I actually think a 318 with a bit of work would do very well in the role you have the truck slated for. Frankly, I would be trying to maximize towing efficiency and mileage.

Did Barry ever tow with this truck? He might give you some input as to weather it did so adequately. If not, how about a stock-ish appearing swap with much less headache. Maybe later model 5.9?

He towed all the time with a 500 lb tow Dolly. he Put better gears in it also. Biggest problem is changing front rotors often. Although my trailer has surge brakes and that will help.

I need to hook up everything and take a little trip to see how she does on small trips first.

The biggest reason for even thinking about a swap is Barry thinks it may need a rebuild. He says it smokes and block has 200k miles on it. So do i rebuild original 318? Newer 5.9 or something else.

I need to do a compression test first to see what is happening. I didnt see much smoke during the test drive.

Yes with that, the cage and the removable wheel it makes quick in and outs non existant. I did have the buckle type 4 point harnesses before and they were difficult to adjust and cheaply made. Now i have the cam style and its a nice upgrade. 3" wide belts which are easy to adjust and dont have a lot of pieces to break.

There is no way of having a 5 or 6 point harness without modding the SRT4 seats or buying new seats.

Was going to paint the CS logo red but I backed out and went with my original plan. I'm glad I did. The texture came out pretty cool.

When you mix the hammertone paint with the wrong paint thinner you get a smoother finish. When mixed with Xylol you get more of the hammer finish.

Looks nice Mike! Sort of think the black wheels are sort of a fad, esp. on black cars. In today, maybe not so much tomorrow. IMO, installing tires and balancing $ is such a rip off. Takes them 15 minutes and $80-100 later, your out the door. That is a pretty good hourly wage! On my cars, I run a thin bead of silicone RTV around weights to lock em in place. Usually sharpie the amount of weight on the rim so if they ever come off, I know how much weight goes back on.

Great tip on cleaning the wheels before installation of the tape weights. I my rather extensive experience if you use quality weights and rub the rubber prep solution from the tire patching station on the wheel to clean it you'll be lucky to get the weights back off easily! I never had a problem with them falling off, but I wonder if Mike's various wheel coatings have left the surface so slick that they can't adhere easily compared to a regular wheel?

I like Todd's idea of writing down how much weight they took. You could do that easily with a cheap tire crayon on the back side of the wheel. I've done that before when dismounting wheels.

That's exactly why weights slid off. Fresh powdercoat and no scuffing of weight area.

Spring is coming. I took car her out for an hour long drive today. Didn't push it but wheels are balanced up to 80 mph anyway. I'm sure they'll be fine at track speeds. I'll stick with the duct tape or perhaps switch to aluminum tape. RTV would probably do well for the street but not too sure about holding up to track duty.

I use the aluminum tape.

One time after an SDAC driving school, between sessions I found a stick on weight sitting on the embrake drum of my SRT4. It was too hot to touch, adhesive got soft and it fell off the rim. Didn't notice the imbalance for the rest of the track day, but I did on the long drive home from Illinois.

A quality high temp RTV will hold up to just about anything. I've been told that the red RTV is the only thing left when guys overhaul the bowl grinders at power houses.

I do like the idea of Al tape more and more especially after reading Mike's post. I may do that to my wheels too.

ETA: Mike M's post.

hehe, just giving you a hard time. I appreciate the compliment! I'm going to do what I can to give you a run for your money if there is an auto cross.
