I am working with a company on getting the lower rear window trim clips reproduced. I had bought the last of what Chrysler had about 5 years ago. So I gave them one today to use for reference. So I'd like to see how many of you would be interested in these so I can give them a rough idea of count so I can get a estimate on reproducing them.

Can you explain better what this part is? Picture maybe?

ok, these are the clips that hold the wide trim that runs across the bottom of the rear window. first pics is of the clip and in the second pic you can see the clips mounted under the rear window.

Ah ok I got ya. I will need at least one set. Maybe a second to keep around. How much?

I would be interested in a set or two, especially if the price can be kept reasonable (maybe $30 for the set?)

not sure on price yet. want to see who all is interested, to get a rough count to give to them so they can quote me a price to make them.

thats about where I would like to get them at, so we are on the same page Dave. But want to gauge interest first and I know with the TD community price is always the main factor.:(

I figured we would be in the same ballpark, I'd definately be in for a set if they were in that range. If it was something like $100 for a set of clips, I'd probably be putting mine back together with big sticky chunk of creativity holding the trim on.

thinkin, I will have them give me a cost to make 50 clips. that way I can get a starting point for cost.

as long as you make them you might as well get 500 or so done as the cost is in the tooling not the materials.

I'm with you, probably need to buy a larger quantity. I know I will need the 7 or so.

this is true, but I already had the mold made, it would just be for materials and labor for someone to make them. I will be meeting with them the beginning of next week so I will see what they say.

Those look good Jay.....Thinking the black would be the way to go, although not sure it matters. What plastic is it made of? HDPE or ABS?

I kinda like the black ones as well. But told him color does not matter as long as the composition of the plastic is the same as the original. not sure what the plastic is he just rattled off some numbers.

I was talking with a friend of mine and we both agree it shouldn't be made out of polypropylene(PP). Too brittle. I'm sure your guy knows what to use...LOL. :thumb:

Sorry to all for the delay on this. I have been busy at work, have had a handful of showings on our house and trying to get my project page ready for SDAC. I will try to meet with my plastics guy this week and see what hes worked out.

Ok, I have some news, I met with my plastic guy and hes is going to make me another sample set out of a high strength, heat resisiant urethane plastic. Since we talked about the heat and uv rays from the sun. if I like how they turn out in this, he said cost for material and labor would be around 3.93 a clip since I am doing such a small batch order. I will keep everyone posted.

OK, Everyone. I talked to my molding guy and he has ordered some material to make the clips, which should be in this week. we both agreed to go with a plastic which is a tad softer(so the ears will not snap off if you have to remove the trim) and to add a uv blocker as well as this plastic is heat rated to 200 degrees so the plastic will not break down like the originals did. I will let you know once I pick up the first set and see how they are.

jaysshelby
10-06-2010, 11:07 PM
Ok its been awhile, but I'm still working on these. we havea new UV resistant 200 degree heat rated urethene plastic that is injected with alumn powder. this product has given us the best results so far. we also have one half of the mold finished being re-machined and working on the other half. From what we discussed the beginning of the week, I might have some ready by the end of the month. I will keep this thread updated.

Sorry guys, kinda let this fall to the way side. I'll stop in and see how the progress is coming on the other half of the mold. I know this is taking longer than I had hoped, but for the price I am being charged for the molds and what not I'm not gonna argue. be patient and I will let everyone know once they will be ready to be made.

ok guys, good news. since it has almost been a year since I started this, I made some progress today. meet with the engineer today and he is taking over my project and said it will be done tomorrow. so I will have some new samples made, and if I like them I will be able to start having the new clips made next week. I will let everyone know once I HAVE THE FIRST SET IN MY HAND.

jaysshelby
05-14-2011, 12:26 PM
Update, the mold works good and I had 10 clips made using the plastic I talked about in previous post. Now the bad news, I put 4 on my test truck to see how the clips would hold. snapped on the studs perfectly. bummer is this plastic used is to strong and when I tried to snap the trim on the bottom tabs on the clips snapped. So its back to the supplier for a more flexible plastic to use. I will post pics of the clips that where made and after so everyone can see what I'm talking about.
