OK, it seems like there isn't near the excitement for SDAC 20 as there was for 19. I'm excited to be coming to my second SDAC in a meer 2 months. So let's hear it.

Who's coming?
Watch ya bringing?
When ya leaving?
From where?
Planning to race or dyno?
Hoping you don't break?
Bringing a spare car for parts?

I'm coming with my 93 Shadow from Edmonton AB in the great hopefully green by then north. The car isn't ready yet but it should be on the road by the end of May or early June. I'll be leaving on the 23rd and hopefully swinging past Winnipeg MB to meet up with Shadow. I plan to race this year, though holding back slightly to make sure I can make it home. :D Who else is coming?

I'm down for my 4th SDAC, wouldn't miss it:nod: Even though this year I have the perfect tow rig (Touareg/Towrig get it;)?) my own top of the line car dolly and I'm sure I could scrounge up a running TM, the extra 3-4 days to tow out there and back from Cali is a deal breaker for bringing a car:(. I just can't take that much time away from the business. Looking forward to seeing the TM gang, hyjinx, and buying a few rounds:thumb: I think the nitrous/rental gig has run it's course though, felt more like work than fun on the Caddy:o

Who's coming? I plan on it - bring the gf also

Watch ya bringing? 1987 Daytona Shelby Z if my trade goes through on my mustang gt

When ya leaving? Friday afternoon to come out - leaving Sunday morning to go back

From where? Norwalk, OH - Buckeye State!!

Planning to race or dyno? Like to race/dyno but no vacation time to spend - I live about 10 minutes from a dyno and dragstrip

Hoping you don't break? That is for sure - 6 hours away from would be a long haul towing a car

Bringing a spare car for parts? Not that fortunate for that right now

Will be me first SDAC - a few buddies from work have been to a few and the stories and descriptions of the cars sound like it would be a good time and friendly atmosphere.

Didn't want to post and jinx myself but here I go anyways! Still lots of stuff to do, but the plan is for me, my wife Jacquie and brother Brent to make it down this year. Still waiting to see if the Bro can get that much time off work and still need to get the new clutch into the Charger, break it in, dyno it and we should be GTG!

I thought it would be really cool for some of the higher HP cars to hit the dyno and see where everyone is really at! Since we all know dyno's will vary, the only Real way to get a fair comparo would be to hit up the same dyno on the same day! Have any of you done this to get a fair "no BS" comparo between some of your cars and the difference of what they dyno'd before on different dynos?

Folks, I got a call from the sales director at the host hotel about our room block. So far less than a dozen folks have made reservations. Our room block expires May 26, about 2 weeks from now.

The motel will release all rooms not reserved by that date, and by contract SDAC is responsible to pay for rooms that are not reserved out of that block by that date. This could be a bill presented to us well into the thousands of dollars, a bill which we simply cannot afford to pay.

Please, we need folks to make their reservations as soon as possible.

You can call toll free 888-528-6738 to make your reservations. Be sure to tell them you are with the Shelby Dodge Auto Club to get the discounted room rate and so we will get the credit for your reservation.

Thanks, Barry

How many rooms are in the block Barry?

For the past few years we have specified a block of 80 rooms and we usually get near that many (or more). Because of the severe penalty clause in this contract with the motel, we cut our block down to 50 feeling certain it would be easy to fill that many rooms.

But every year the contracts with the motels get more protective of their reservation system. Five years ago it was unheard of for us to have a clause in our contract with the motel that specified a penalty for not filling the block of rooms.

Our contract with the Clarion this year specifies penalties starting 45 days before the event (which is now) and 80% full reservation rate.

So today I agreed they reduce our block by 20% to try to avoid the penalty. But this whole thing has me more worried than ever before.

Pre-registration has been open for 3 weeks, yet less than 20 people are registered, which is much slower than normal. In the past there has always been a big rush on pre-registrations starting about June 1, and of course many folks register on site too.

Still trying to work out travel/transportation to SDAC. Better to fly into Baltimore or DC? Local's whatcha think? Nothing decent to rent for cars other than a couple 'exotic' places out of DC. Big problem with them on their Viper/Ferrari/Porsche type cars is a couple lines in their disclaimer page. "We reserve the right to remotely disable and retreive any vehical being raced, driven at exccesive speeds, or off any public roadways" Well then, what would be the point in paying waaay to much to rent from them:confused:?

BWI and Dulles are equidistant from Hagerstown. Traffic out of BWI is always better, regardless of the time of day or week. Trust me on this; I fly all the time.

EDIT: There are also more flights into BWI, which means you have a better chance of a cheaper fare and a larger aircraft.

Do not fly into BWI. Fly into Dulles and take the back roads to Hagerstown.

If you have the time and your looking for a scenic drive you can drive through Harpers Ferry, WV. The more direct route is 15 north @ the city of Leesburg and hit Frederick then Hagersbush from there.

BWI is about 15 miles further and it's a lot of boring highway driving.

I must disagree. The route from BWI might be "a lot of boring highway," but at least it's more than one lane in each direction. (Most of it is actually interstate.) One traffic accident on US-15, and you're screwed.

Depends on what ride you want, as others have said you can take some nice back roads from Dulles. From BWI, it's all highway driving. If you're flying in on Friday, try to get in early to avoid the commuters, there's a lot of traffic north on 15 and west on 70 in the afternoons/evenings.

They have an event in their main ballroom on Saturday night and expect 250 guests/cars for that event. After Saturday night, the rest of the week is a little slow for them (just us). They are going to mark off a space in the lot for the Saturday night activity, so our guys should stay clear of it.

It may be crowded there Friday night, not sure, but the week before there is a motorcycle convention in town and they are booked solid for that.

Yes, I have those conversations with the management every year. Last year we only had a problem because there was a senior's complex apartments next to the parking lot and the old folks kept calling the cops because of the noise (which wasn't all that bad).

Some times the word doesn't get passed from the manager down to the night shift though and I get calls from the front desk which is in a panic asking what is up. And other times a blind eye is turned to it. In Detroit (at the Marriott) the afternoon maintenance guy came out and mooched a couple beers the first night. At first I thought, what the heck is this? But that guy turned into the best hotel friend we could have. And HE brought the night manager and security guard over to us. They were all like, "anything you guys need, you just let us know!"

The only time we really got blamed and the hotel threatened us, was at Chicago where they had two events on Sat nite. A wedding and a graduation party for sailors from the nearby Great Lakes Training Center. Drunk guests from both of those groups saw us in the parking lot and started speeding around driving nuts in the lot. The front desk blamed our guys for the action, but when we went out to check on the situation, our guys were just standing around bs'ing and such.

But we always tell the motel we will be out in the parking lot late, sometimes most of the night. I've never had a bad reaction from telling them. :D

But thanks for the tip JDAWG, I will add it to my list of things to watch out for. We will try to make friends with both the security guy and the cop, just like we do most years.

Any tips on drag racing for the first time? Car is manual. Do I set the E-Brake at the start then release when launch? What's a good RPM launch range, car is about 215hp.

sdac guy
06-21-2010, 09:22 PM
Bring your car up to the starting line SLOWLY as you approach the starting line. There are two yellow bulbs on the top of your side of the starting tree. When you light the first one (pre-stage light) you have about a foot to go till the second one lights.

When the second one lights you tap the brake to stop rolling, if you roll forward far enough that it goes out then you back up till you are past them both and then try again. If this happens, don't get flustered, it has happened to EVERY drag racer at one time or another.

Once you are sitting there with both staging bulbs lit, you rev the motor to your launch RPM. On a T2 stick car, try it about 3K RPM your first time. The lights will start to come down for both your lane and the other one. Let the clutch out about midway between the last yellow and the green to get a good reaction time. Then floor it.

If you let the clutch out too soon and you roll past the starting line before the green comes on you will red light. But on most stockish cars leaving on the last yellow is probably safe.

If your RPM's are too low, the engine will bog some and then take off. If your launch RPM is too high, then your tires will spin. Finding that happy balance RPM is the key to good launches. Pay attention to your tach so you know when to shift. Follow the gears on up but you will most likely not need to shift to 5th, ride it out in 4th.

After you pass the finish line, slow your car so you can turn off onto the return road. Somewhere along there will be the time slip shack. Stop there to get your time slip. If you had a good time and didn't break, get back into the staging lanes and go again (for Test & Tune). Of course if you were competing in an event and you lost, you are done for that event.

Do not use or touch your E-brake during this process. If you are running slick tires, you may use the water box for your burnout. If you are on street tires, you should drive around the water box and if you want to warm your tires, do a burnout in front of the water box. You might use the E-brake during the burnout. The water box rules are not hard and fast rules, just good track etiquette, same as at the finish line. The winner of the run should be the first one to enter the return road, just proper manners.

Watch the other drivers and don't be afraid to ask questions. There are some top notch drag racers in our group and all of them will be willing to share advice.

I also heard it is common courtesy to Pre-stage and then wait for the other lane to pre-stage and then stage.yes this is too true, then the staging war starts.... who jumps in first??? thats to be determined at the time of staging.... just an FYI i like to pre stage then get spoolin then jump in staged, so normally i pre stage first... wait till the next lane pre stages.... start spoolin, wait till they jump in then stage....

it seems to work for me....

for those who havnt gone down a 1/4 mile, just sit back anbd watch a few runs, and ill be more than will to help anyone out, ill even get up there w/ you just so u have some guildance...:thumb: u know just so u doint pull any of the newbie mistakes.... staging w/ the back tires is a funny one:D

I think Gary Donovan still has the record for replacing a head gasket on a hot engine. At SDAC-11 he did it in 20 minutes, in time for his next round of racing. :thumb:

Barry

I believe it was 47 minutes start to finish. It was Gary and I in that final round. They asked me if I would wait and I said 'absolutely!'

I also heard it is common courtesy to Pre-stage and then wait for the other lane to pre-stage and then stage.

99% of the time it is! Test-N-Tune I don't really think it matters too much, and then their are other certain times when you may not want to do that....especially on a pro-tree.

I know that is how the pro's do it, but wasn't sure about how amateur ranks handle that.

Barry

Barry,
Are we having a pro-tree on the quick 16 and the heads up race? :thumb::D

Always on the Q16 (or 8), never on the heads up or bracket.

Alright, guys, what days should I take off of work next week? I could take Monday through Wednesday off, but I don't want to blow through that much vacation if one or two of those days are going to be mainly "down time."

I do understand your question, but really there is no "down time" at SDAC. Even when there is not an official event going on, people are hanging out in the parking lots, hoods up, bsing, wrenching, having a good time.

Tuesday in the daytime is the only idle period we have on the schedule. Drag racing in the afternoon. Gates open at 3pm (actually before that), and racing starts at 4:30 pm.

Wednesday daytime has the road rally which is a ton of fun but that is for 3-4 hours in the middle of the day. That is the only planned event in the daytime, awards and door prizes that night.

A note on the road rally (for everyone). The event is planned as a fun run. No rallying knowledge or experience is needed. It is not an event where you need to speed to make a good score. Being very observant will win you points as questions must be answered along the route. Most questions answered wins! Minimum of two people per car, but the more the merrier and the more eyes looking, the more questions answered, maybe.

So even if your car can't make it, join up with someone else and have a blast!

Barry

Thanks Barry, big help.

I like the idea of making the rally AFTER all of the racing. If my car hold up, I will be in this year!

Not going after all, body guy couldn't buff out and finish trim in time, so I can't get around to finishing exhaust, turbo intake, vac lines, A/C and alt. :(

I'm hoping Barry will still give me a shirt and apply my reg fees towards my next years membership or something...

I went to Cinci last year with no car. Had a good time, though I said again not without a car. Is it bad I have two SRTs, a GTC and a Daytona and none can make a 10 hour trip? hrm.. One more week and I'd have at least 2 ready.

Time to go in one hour for me. I will be bringing the CSRT4. The rt is not back together in time and my wifes 87 lebaron would probably be up to the trip but she's a little nervous we could have a breakdown. The fan went out last week and the car was overheating. All fixed now though.
