Painful isn't it?
I was asked at work how much I had into my GLHS. I added it up off the top of my head for the last 2-3 years of purchases. It came to about what yours is. Painful. I'll never answer that question again.
When asked before adding it up, my answer was "A LOT"
Now when asked I say "TOO MUCH"

With copies of those receipts and a form from the BMV, you can send off to Columbus and get "Collector" Plates so you don't have to go thru E-Check ever again. :eyebrows: Then you can eliminate the Cat and go FASTER! :thumb:

I like your gumption Chuck but unless your gutting the van, you won't do it with that turbo. 8 valve or 16 valve? 16 valve maybe or if you have a Steve M head but it better be a light van, :thumb:

PS, make sure to get the output shaft gear magnafluxed.

:(now i have to ask. you said you have $8,765.66 in to your engine. is it true that people are doing the 16v stratus swap for $1000 to $1500? I'm used to being called a idiot so I'm not going to throw the names of the people out there

Yup. People can do it. But the little things are what add up. Turbo choice, intercooler, fuel upgrades, electronics, heavy duty bolts and nuts, and the amount of bling that he's put into it.

It will look titties once done. Rob and I will start assembling it next week hopefully if there are no more problems.

Simon, I think this van will destroy most any other van. It's a light van to begin with, manual everything almost. I don't think we'll need to gut it too heavily to get the record. :thumb: G'luck pappa.

You can, anything is possible but it also depends on your skill level, how cheap you can source up parts, what you have to begin with-aka good engine with later T1 pistons if you doing a hybrid etc. Heck, I probably have $8-9000 in my van but if someone who didn't have the skill or free labour I provide, would probably be a $20,000 van easily, :(

It builds up quickly, but the $8,765.66 isn't completely engine stuff...it's for stuff like the brakes and other things. I have a rust free Omni shell sitting out in the yard right now, and to megasquirt it, put in a high compression NA engine, and refresh the suspension and brakes will cost about $2,000. But that's just what I have thought of...there is always something else you forget.

I refuse to total up everything that is in my charger right now. I know it's pretty close to that. $4,000 in the top half of an engine will do that to you.

Chuck, go with the DBB, you will hit your goals and not have to mess around. Its iffy your current turbo could do the deed. I could be wrong but based on what I am running, I should be right. Your combo in a car would easily do what you want but a Van, no.

$20 a/f gauge

Yep, speed can cost money... doing it both ways with 2 cars

I got ~ $10G's in the Z including the cash I paid for the car 12 years ago... 11.62 @ 120mph

I also currently have ~ $1k (including cost of the car) into the T2 shadow... 12.89 @ 105mph - when I only had $500 into the car, but it was using the $1500 worth of wheels & tires from the Z ;)

As for the Neon the first go around I spent 12,886.50 plus beer, nachos and bandaids. I tallied ALL the receipts. Including maint. stuff.

As for the Neon this time, I have learned TONS over the years and I have just broke the $2800 mark. I only have to spend about another $200 to drive it on street tires but, I have to spend at least 700 over that to throw it down the track in an almost legal state.

Yeah I have a least 3 or 4 Gs in my motor, 2 more in my trans, another for suspension, and probably at least one or two more in paint and countless random hardware store runs for various odds and end. What does that make, $9k? In an $800 car that's still in pieces. Ugh.

The motor and trans have been sitting in a stand for a couple of years now. That's the real kicker...spending that kind of money but having it sit around due to lack of time. I've come to realize that my time is worth a lot more than even the most expensive toys I've bought for this thinig.

You definitely are not the only one that has put a lot of cash into their vehicle. I think saying that all TDers are cheap is a complete and utter lie, and this thread proves it.

$1500 for a menegon head
$2000 for a hybrid turbo, log header, and misc other parts with that order
$1300 for a freshly rebuilt a520/a555 transmission with an OBX.
$250 for a spearco IC
$100 for IC pipes
$450 for a very low mile 2.5 shortblock
$100 for fuel lines
That alone totals $5700, and then when you add in things like oil pump, pickup, rod bearings, head gasket, headbolts, speed distance sensor, oxygen sensor...the list goes on, the price really adds up. I have MOST of my recipts from all of my parts store runs to get bolts and little things, as well as the big money items. maybe someday I'll add it all up. I'm hoping that day never comes though, because if I add it all up, it most likely means I'm proving to the insurance company exactly how much has been invested. :o

Edit: and this has been from the funds I made co-oping every other semester, and working as a student. :eyebrows: I REALLY can't wait to start pulling down the big bucks when I start working in August. I may actually have time during the week to work on my cars!!!

But you must remember... a large majority of people into these cars can barely afford to scrape together $1,000 for their car. And a large majority of those people, they were attracted to the affordability of the car combined with it's performance. Rarely do you see Supra and Mustang owner's converted into the turbo dodges.

I started out getting my car because 3200 was affordable for a pretty nice car. I couldn't get anything close for that much around here, and now that I'm making a bit more money, I'm going to put more into my car.

The biggest issue I see is the cars/vans are so beat when we buy them that most owners try to be cheap and well, you know the rest. If most of us did things right the first time and didn't cut corners, I guarantee there would be alot more happy TM owners, :thumb:

I can honestly say that *I do not want to know* what my bill is up to because I would be forced to commit suicide. I am sticking with "a lot". :| Worse yet, "A lot and nothing to show for it".

Yeah I feel your pain guys, $2500 into the tranny alone and no obx either! It does have all the other known a413 goodies though. Lot's into the motor and parts I have laying all around my house too. I dont know what I have into it alltogether and I really don't care cuz if I were to give up now THAT would be the biggest waste of money I've ever done.
