View Full Version : Long Lost Project - L-Body rear - want these?

Johnny
03-25-2010, 10:13 PM
I came across some factory parts I bought, made me think when I was going to make these.
On the top of the rear L-body strut are an upper and lower rubber donut (isolators).
I could make these "IF" there was enough interest.
Let me hear from you here IF you WOULD buy them or not.
Price is as most of my stuff, as reasonable as possible for low volume items.

I am in for a set.

Making them a hair thinner than stock might be good. They are hard to istall on some coilovers because less threads are available when used with a coiloer spring hat. I remember barely being able to get the nut on when using the FWD rear coilovers.

Johnny

I am going to use the softer durameter, but you can take off as much as you want to make it as thin as you want. It will still be stronger than the rubber.

Slightly thinner would be better considering that some shocks don't have the long threads on the top like our stock ones do. (IIRC 2G Eclipse shocks have a shorter threaded area so you lose strut travel when installing them)

I know that there were just barely enough threads on the FWD konis I have on mine. I think my project BCs should be ok but it will be close so if they were 1/8-1/4" thinner each it would be nice.

The poly will also compress less than rubber won't it? If that is the case then it means that to get the same installed thickness they would have to start out thinner anyway.

As earlier in the tread, I said yes, I am making them thinner than the stock rubber ones. And if anyone wants them even thinner, just stick them on a belt sander a few seconds to make them as thin as you would like.

Can you make them thinner? They are 1/4" or more thicker than stock and make installing shock with shorter threads very difficult. :)

I couldn't get them to work with my BC shocks. There really aren't many shocks that have as long of a threaded section as ours so it limits my choices when building Frankenstein kits and anything that is thicker just makes it worse.

Were they stock konis with stock springs or the FWD performance coilover konis?

I think the FWD performance konis end up with a little less usable threads (due to the coilover spring hats).

They could probably be made to work with an extension nut even if they are too thick so no matter what they can work.

The problem is more getting the threads started. I had to lower the car off from the jack to get the FWD Koni coilovers installed with the rubber bushings. The weight of the car compressed the rubber ones enough to get the thread started. With the polys it will be tight for sure.

With my BC setup the poly bushings are just too thick. This is a problem that is primarily due to the BCs that have a shorter threaded area on the shaft and not Johnny's design but I am curious to see if it exists with others aswell.

I can try to belt sand them but I would prefer that the next run be thinner (Although I admit it is influenced by a special purpose that isn't stock).

They do not work with Koni's either. I could only use the bottom one (for compression) and had to use the stock rubber top one just to get the nut started.

Ok that is good info. I am not just being too anal and picky about it then. :)

How much thinner would they have to be based on your experience? I imagine that it would have to be atleast 1/8" for both bushings.

I would like to see them be 1/4" or more thinner than stock on the top and bottom but that is for my own selfish reasons.

Given that the poly bushings will compress less than the rubber ones they need to start out significantly thinner than the rubber ones in order to get the same installed thickness.

I was able to install the BCs with rubber bushings but I compressed the heck out of them which I couldn't do with the poly bushings.

Interesting... I wonder if there were multiple molds or something that made some thicker than others...

-Rich

shelbydave
08-24-2010, 08:05 PM
I noticed they were thicker than the stock rubber ones by probably about 1/4 - 3/8". How is everybody putting them on? I fastened the lower bolt to the axle, and used a jack to raise the axle and the top of the strut through up top. That way I just made sure both struts were lined up, couple pumps on the jack, and bingo... put the bushing and cup on up top.

Johnny
08-25-2010, 03:01 AM
When I made these, I made them a touch thinner than the stock ones I had. Sounds like I could have even gone thinner. I do not want to make new molds. Most molds are top pour and could just add less poly to make them less thick. But this is a expensive closed mold and can't do that.
So if any one needs them thinner, let me know when you order and I have a nice belt sander I can use to make them as thin as you'd like.

is shaving the bottom going to accomodate more room for the nut to get on??? r u running the FWDP coil overs too???

how bout i have him shave the top 5/16" and go with 7/16ths for the lower??? do u think this would be acceptable?? dont mind the funky numbers lol
