I can't hear the fuel pump prime or run at all when keyed or cranking. Will a bad HEP throw a code?

It should throw a code 11.

What happened? Daily driver wouldn't suddenly start or ?

Have you checked for spark? Could the fuel pump took a crapper.

Check power to ASD and power from ASD to pump. ASD is what actually sends power to the pump at key-on (and the rest of the time). It should set a code for the ASD too.

Remember that the ADS relay might be have burned points so when you go to check the power at the pump with a test lamp it lights up but there is no current to run the pump check with a old head lamp as a load

it ran yesterday, i parked it. it was beautiful the last few days, car started and ran fine, drove it around. its cool and rainy today, wont start. havent checked anything yet but cant hear anything running so figuring something related to the pump is the problem

Check for spark, if you have spark, then most likely the fuel pump took a dump.

The pump would still prime when you turned the ignition to "on" if you had a bad HEP.

jump from you battery pos to the coil, it completes the circuit and your fuel pump will run, atleast to get it home, if it runs after that then its probably a bad asd relay

Battery to coil? Both positive and negative? I seem to only have the starting problem with this car when its cold or cold and wet. Its its warm and sunny it starts right up. At first I recognized if the check engine light wasn't on when keyed the pump wouldn't run or prime. Now I have the light but no pump. Haven't checked for spark but don't smell any fuel at all, that I would always smell with this car.

No, just the + side of the coil. The - side of the coil is controlled by LM/SMEC/SBEC.

When the ASD is on it sends power to both the + side of coil and the fuel pump. I believe they're fused thru the fusible links, too.

But, the SMEC (and later ecus) have a line that watches the ASD. So, if the ecu doesn't see the ASD cycle properly with when the key is turned on it'll set a code.

Its a 92sbec2 that is in the car.

Its easier to pop the ASD out and just jump the slots on the plug with a 1" wire.

I swapped asd relays and nothing changed. This is something stupid I know it. No codes either.

I guess I'll say it again, do you have SPARK?

Simon you are the person that I would definately hand a pluggeed in fraid extension cord and then spray from a distance with a hose. Your first post didn't disappear

Nevermind, I don't know why I bother, just keep replacing stuff, you might figure it out one day, :banghead:

The car has spark when it wouldn't start... he shaked the fuse box the car started... it is rather odd...... before he tried anything...

Could it be that something is getting wet. It is wierd that it would run on good nice days but then not start on a cool rainy day. Maybe he could have bad grounds also, Shaking the fuse box would be a sign of a loose or broken connection.

Yea, I know I had a loose one to the fuel pump relay In the fuse box under hood. This I knew already. Had repaired it. Need to check power to the box and out of box and at the pump. Could just be that or the fuel pump died but this is the first time I have failed to able to start it.

Check for bad grounds. My fuel pump wasn't priming, and it turned out to be a bad ground behind the dash...

Broke the test light out and went through the fuse block under the hood. Power to all of it. Decided to check for spark just for kicks, put thr test light to the positive and cranked, no light. I have no spark. I know this because my laser will light the light cranking. Now what do I do

You're checking for power at the + side of the coil and not seeing power? Check the power input to the ASD to make sure you have power at the ASD to supply the coil and the fuel pump.

start with the basics. about all you can do. what kind of car is this. Does it have a HEP. Id not if it is a T3 have you checked Cam sensor or the crank sensor. Need more info on the car

This is my maserati motor es. Has all the standard items a T2 has.

Hold the test light on the coil, and have someone hit the key but not start. The test light should light up where the asd would normally activate for a second. If it doesn't light up do what risen said.

doesnt light at the positive side of the coil. i dont know how to test the asd

Pull the main harness off of the SBEC and clean all of the pins inside the plug best you can. You may have to somehow bend them slightly so that they make good contact with the pins on the board. I'm not sure why but I've had this problem out of the majority of my 88 up cars over the years.

I bet 1 beer;)

Just back probe the supply side for power and the output side of the ASD relay
if your not getting power through it replace it . if it is working start tracing the green wire back to the coil.

also check the input to the relay is switching on and off too.

i had same no start problem all i did was run a wire from the thicker green wire going to the coil to the positive side of the battery you unplug the coil and just stick the wire in the connector
you should hear the pump and FPR start working
im not sure what my problem was but it has worked since

well its been nice today finally and i swapped a bunch of known good parts in and tried to get it started. still no spark. all parts in car check out good when put in another car its starts fine. changed hep and coil, dont know, yet to check the asd as im not sure how to

just open the cover and look for burned points on the ADS relay.

i have more than one and neither starts the car

jumped the positive side of the coil to the positive side of battery and i get fuel pump it sounds like or something for sure is running when i do it.

I would take the ASD apart and sand the points. It worked for me after the car left me with no spark on the side of the road.

Xtrempickup
04-03-2010, 09:08 PM
are the points inside the black plastic cover?

boost geek
04-03-2010, 09:31 PM
On 87's, the cover is metal with a plastic base. There should be 2 sets of points inside.
