as the title says. I am getting some made at a shop and need to know what to make them out of. These will be going in a 94 543, 91 568 hybrid. I was thinking delrin.

Are the pads the same between the 555/520 and the 523/568? If so, I'd be interested in a couple sets.

No, they are different. The early pads are a simple U-shape with a notch in the center of the U to keep it on the fork. The later ones are like two pads connected at one end with a little bar that sits in a notch on the fork. I've haven't compared the shape of the fork ends, but I'm guessing that are not the same. The later ones look less likely to split like the early ones do.

The shape of these pads is such that they would not be easily machined, regardless of material. One method I learned from a book is to apply brass to the forks with a torch and then grind or mill it down to the proper thickness so it fits the slider. I've done this with my 568 and it works great! Just be careful not to get the fork too hot while brazing it.:thumb:

we decided on a material but i won't have prices until he gets the material. I'm not sure what plastic it was, i've gotten it written down somewhere. I was thinking of getting 11 sets made.

:thumb: ok, i just got back from the shop, they had 1 pad done today for me to look at. They were made out of a plastic and we did the torture test on it :banghead: and it failed horribly so now we decided to make them out of bearing bronze. he toldme that it won't be more than 200 for them all. He just gave me that price to "play it safe" as he told me.

Some plastics are brittle.

Wow, $200 for 11 sets? so 6 pads per set... $3 each pad? I can have my neighbor (with a CNC in his garage) quote it if you'd like?

Boogieman142

thats for 1 set

Boogieman142
06-21-2006, 06:21 PM
actually the shape of them makes them really easy to make.

thats for 1 set

I'm confused... how much for 1 set of all 6 pads?

Back in the late '80s I was working in a Honda dealership and their shift forks were dipped in an epoxy. The epoxy was extremely durable, and it took a lot to wear through it. However, once the epoxy was gone, the fork wore away in no time flat.

oh, u mean kinda like our diff pins, once the plating wears off they godoen in no time. But the 200 is for 1 set of 6 pads. Those are the ones made from the bearing bronze, thats the best that we could think of.

 $200 for 1 set of 6 pads... wow. let me talk to my neighbor with the CNC...

Can you please post or PM the part numbers? I'll try Cliff for sure if I cannot get them.

Thanks, :thumb:

He just did!

First 4 digits + next 3 digits = part no.

So "4295 519 2 INSERT, Gearshift Fork, 5TH Speed" is part no 4295519.

519 was the one I couldn't get for the A555/520 IIRC.

If anyone has any or all of the above, PM me please. I would like to find good examples of each to see what it would take to make brass replacements.

519 was the one I couldn't get for the A555/520 IIRC.

Thats retarded. Why would they stop making the one that goes out the most?

BadAssPerformance
06-02-2008, 08:24 AM
They stopped making them all at the same time. Those that go out the most get used up first.

Any specs on the thickness of the pads? I really like mock glh's idea of building up the fork with brass.
