Anyone got any tips on hooking up an aftermarket Speedo in a G-body? Any and all information is much appreciated.

Since I installed the FAST ECU in my '87 Z the speedo has not worked and I'd like to have one for the street.

I'll probably get an Autometer Sport Comp to match the rest of the guages

I say just make a complete new cluster with autometer gauges. It's a lot of wiring for the turn signals and other cluster lights. But I think it would look better than just slaving in an aftermarket speedo in the stock cluster.

I've been looking at replacing the whole cluster as well useing 3 3/8th speedo and tach and using 1 1/2 again for oil press, volt, cool temp, and fuel level

Yeah, the stock cluster will go bye-bye as none of the guages work. Anyone put an Autometer speedo in their Turbo Mopar? Tips?

I was lucky. L-bodies have a cable driven speedo. Could that work in your G-body?

just have to add a cable and SDS with a hole in it :thumb:

any tips to hook it up?

The hard part would be installing the speedo in the G-body dash. As far as the hookup goes, it's pretty much like you say. Add a cable and a L-body SDS with a cable hole in it. You might have to drill a hole in your firewall. If the gauges/mounting points are the same size it would be the cheap way.

Cool. might do that. I see that Autometer makes electric Speedo's too.

Kevin, is this similar to what you used with the mopar speedo cable?

I think this gauge will work with your factor SDS. You just need to find out what the output is on the factory SDS, and what input is required on the gauge.

I was just talking about using a factory L body gauge with an L-body cable and SDS. The gauge end has a specific factory nylon retainer that probably won't work on the aftermarket gauges. I'd have to see the back of the aftermarket gauge to know for sure.

I installed aftermarket gauges in the cluster of my 88 shadow es. The speedo and tach are 3 3/8, the egt and boost gauges are 2 1/16.
I cut the majority of the circuitry off of the back of the cluster, and cut most of the white plastic out of the back as well. The car originally had a cable speedo with the new style 2 wire SDS. I'm not sure about the autometer speedo but the VDO is capable of accepting signals from a VR sensor, a Hall Effect sensor, a 2 wire pulse sensor, or a single wire from the speed output of an electronicly controlled tranny. I just hooked it up with a single wire as you would with the electronic tranny and spliced it into the output wire of the SDS. I haven't driven the car yet, but I manually set the pulse/mile on the speedo to 10,000 and with the key on and the car jacked up, the speedo goes up when I spin the passenger wheel so I know it is atleast picking up the signal. All I have to do is have somebody mark out a mile of road once I get it running so I can use the auto-configure built into the speedo so it reads properly. Hope this is of some help.

Looks good.

Yeah, the Autometer electric speedo I got is suppose to be able to auto-calibrate too.
