View Full Version : Dakota high output alternator?

I just put a snowplow on my 01 Dakota, and the plow motor is a little too much for the charging system to handle. Does anyone know of any high output alternator options available for the V6?

I'm pretty sure the battery is original to the truck, and I may end up replacing that soon too. It would be nice to have some extra amperage available though, I run other electronic doodads besides just the plow.

Dak should have a 125A available if you dont already have it? Maybe more?

Checkout Lugert, he does alternators :thumb:

How does the V6 plow? Didnt know that was an option.

I think the options were 117a or 136a. I'm not positive which one I've got. I would assume 136a as the truck has A/C, power everything, and heated mirrors.

I haven't had a chance to do a whole lot of plowing with it yet, but so far I'm happy. I've got an older Snoway 6'8" 24 series plow with downpressure. It scraped the hard packed ice clean off my driveway. My only complaint so far is that the front end sags too much with the plow on. Not quite to the bump stops, but close. I've got a set of Timbrens ordered to take care of that.

Turn up the front bars 2 or 3 turns per side

You might have to add another alternator or battery or both, or find a custom alt.

Did that all ready, still too saggy. Probably doesn't help that it has 88,000 miles and the suspension is probably a little tired.

I see Summit Racing carries an 1000 CCA @ 32 deg. Optima red top. Might be an option?

I believe that you would have to have the "heavy duty service group" to get the bigger 136 amp alternator. Look on the top of the alternator, it would be #56030914AA.

Thanks. What else was included in the heavy duty service group? I bet this truck doesn't have that as it came with the smaller 8.25 axle, no trailer hitch, and no trans oil cooler. I'll check the part number when I get out of work. A larger capacity stock alt should bolt right up, correct?

What battery do you have now? Dont waste money on a redtop. If you want to upgrade your battery get a Deka Intimidator or a Diehard Platinum (relabled Odyssey). Just a fyi that alt is the same as the V8 trucks. There was an option for a 160amp alt in a Durango for a firetruck package. Any autoparts can get you one. Just give them your old alt, they wont know its a lower amperage. I just looked up a new OEM and its $234 list. pn is 56029915aa. Also look on ebay and on www.car-part.com. I got a used one for $50 shipped. Also if it was my truck I would upgrade all your charge wires and grounds ot 2 or 0 gauge.

edit- forgot look up a 01 Durango 5.9, there is a 160amp listed

I think it has a 650cca battery in it now. Not sure of brand. I'll have to look when I get out of work. I saw that an 01 Durango had a 160a alt listed, but i noticed the part numbers for the 136a alt didn't match between the Durango and my Dakota so I thought it might be funky.

The H.D. Service Group came with the 136 amp alternator, 750CCA battery and "maximum cooling". Should have a transmission and power steering cooler if it had that package. The 8 1/4" rear is because you have a V-6. As far as I know all the alternators mount up the same with regard to the Magnum engines. The 4.7L V-8 would be different.
I would get the largest trans cooler you can if you don't already have one and are using a snowplow.

yup - 3.9, 5.2, 5.9 share common stuff (as the 3.9 is basically the v8 minus 2 cylinders). a 136amp will bolt on. might not even need to change to longer/ shorter belt

My Omni has a 130amp alt out of a dakota, not sure what year it was from though.

Thanks. I knew the 3.9 was based on the V8 designs, I just thought maybe some of the accessory brackets were different or something. I'll look in to getting parts once i fix the fluid leak on the plow. No sense spending money on power systems if the plow is out of commission.

So how did this work out for you iangoround (http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/member.php?1597-iangoround), I have a plow on my dakota as well and the alternator is not able to keep up. Did you end up going with the 160amp?

I got myself an optima yellow top and kept the same alternator. As long as I change the pump fluid once a season and use that blue low temp hydraulic fluid instead of power steering fluid or trans fluid I don't have any problems with it.
