Thanks John. It's a Jackson Racing STS. About an inch is added to the height of the shifter and it makes for a very short and tight shift. I love it.

Very nice clean job on the car. The npr intercooler on my GLH sits even closer to the alternator. I had to cut that upper ground stud off and use the 90 amp ND alt. You're probably using some sort of solid bobble strut so it should be fine.

Trying a new "airbender" method of getting the air in. Should be sweet, plus it cuts out the need for piping = more room. :D Thanks Alan! I've never seen a 4-door L with that big of a FMIC and the grill.

Thanks! It actually was closer in mock-up and we were gonna mill off that ground stud. After getting it in it looks like theres enough room without touching it but, if I need to...........

I think the large NPR intercooler is definetly taller, they look close length wise
and mine was behind an uncut grill

Agreed. That's where I put the oil filter on my hybrid.

I used a universal kit from Jegs. Forget the part number now as that was years ago. But it came with the oil filter mount, the adapter that goes on the engine block(there were 4 screw-in inserts for the inside of this for different oil filter threads, 2 metric, 2 standard), 6 or 8 feet of Goodyear high pressure high temperature hose.

I had to provide my own hose barbs. Just used brass fittings from Lowes and high pressure hose clamps. Just large versions of fuel line clamps. Never had a single drop leak out over thousands of miles. Although I agree with the others. Push-Lok is awesome stuff. :thumb:

Radiator is mounted, just gotta get some hoses to fit it.:D Made some brackets out of aluminum for the top. Drilled holes and attached bolts to the lower mounting tabs then drilled holes in the core support for the bolts to run thru. List of stuff to do is getting smaller and smaller. :amen:

Wow, those are pretty short. Did you crank out any numbers to see what your ideal runner length should be?

Of coarse! POST#196. here it is......

So, I asked DJ to help me with intake port runner situation. It is very tight as i've said before....I wanted to get some ball park numbers on where I would be with the relatively short runners that I will running. I gave him a total port runner length of 8" which is the roughly 5 1/4" port in the head and the 2 1/2 runner length I have currently with the intake. I might be able to get an extra inch of runner length once I get everything mocked up which will help. Once again, DJ didn't disappoint. Here's what he came up with.:

Ok, so I dug up my intake book (Scientific design of exhaust and intake systems, Third edition. Philip H. Smith and John C. Morrison). Using Helmholtz theory for pipe organs, which gets you close, the equation is:

T=RPM*L/V

T= time for the pulse to travel from closed to open end and back in seconds
L= length of the pipe (runner)
V= speed of sound in the gas being used

The book converted T to be expressed in crankshaft degrees. They suggested the use of 90degrees but this term varies a bit with valve events. It also uses 1100 ft/sec for V which seems to be well used.

Using those numbers, a total port length of 8" equates to a 12375 RPM tuning frequency. Obviously you wouldn't be spinning that high but you could take advantage of the next harmonic which would be at 6188 PRM.

I found a good thread on speed talk which also references this book but they use 72deg instead of 90. This gives a tuned RPM of 9900. Once again you would take advantage of the 2nd harmonic which would be 4950RPM.

The next equation on that thread generalizes more to L=84000/N (N is the RPM) This equation gives a tuned RPM of 10500. You guessed it, using the second harmonic you get 52500RPM.

So you can see why I called it a bit of a crap shoot. But these get you close or at least give you a general idea. By utilizing the second harmonic, the pulse energy won't be as strong as if you were able to take advantage of the fundamental but there will still be an effect.

Here is the link and quote of the post in the speed talk article. It is on the third page.

http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1163

That being said. Runner length is obviously not optimal but, I had to work with the space I had. We'll see how it turns out once it's running. I am optimistic that it will be fine and will crank out some good number.

Thanks for posting that up for me. Sounds like you will do just fine with it given the number one priority was to get the intake in the car. I can't wait to see what this thing will do.

Hey Carroll why didnt you use the HE351?

I'm running a cross flow FMIC and the HE351 has the funny outlet that points to the drivers side. I was gonna use it and put the TB on the passenger side but, theres no room to put the TB on the passenger side in the L-body(not with a TIII). So it was either modify the holset compressor or get a new turbo....that choice may keep me from making SDAC since i've had some unfortunate events happen in the last week or so.:(

I hear ya on the fittings. It's depressing when you walk out of the store with your little tiny bag and a huge massive hole in your pocket. For the rad hose I pieced together a bunch of chunks to get what I wanted and then took it into a shop and asked them to match it. There are "holes" for each coil so they sit flush and the spacing for each spark plug is spot on as you can see. The back of the bracket mounts to the outer VC bolts :hail:. Still needs to be finished, edges rounded and cleaned up and maybe some swish cheese holes :eyebrows: and then I'll have Rob powder coat it black for me. Got some LS1 wires too......

Welded a 90' elbow to the scirrocco rad and was able to use the factory lower rad hose after some trimming. Ordered a upper hose from a "hose book" and it fit like a glove!

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l71/rx2mazda/DSC01667.jpg

Also got a lot of wiring done for the BS3, wired up the fan, and few other odds and ends. Fuel lines/fittings/filters and crank trigger parts will be here tomorrow. Friday I plan to run the fuel lines, wire the voltage regulator, start the car(;)), etc. etc. It's starting to look like a real drivable car now and the list of things to do has gotten real small.

You wanting a factory battery tray? I may have one up in my storage barn.....but you know that a lawn tractor battery fits perfect in there sideways WITHOUT the factory battery tray?

I just made an aluminum bottom and holdown for it. 3/8" studs per NHRA....LOL...I get a kick out of that holding down a lawn tractor batter. Kind of like I get a kick out of 3/4" CRS holding down 4 ignition coils per DJ!

Well, you missed port head, do valve job, machine head, machine beadplate, make crank straps, align hone mains, hone cylinders, assemble engine, install 3.50 FD, finish welding cage, paint cage, finish suspension pieces, make rear anti-roll bar, put back together, make it look good, and hope it drives.......but you're right. Unfortunately they took away my manual mill so I will be taking step one in learning the CNC with the bedplate which is watching and taking notes on setup and machine workings. The engine machining I am also learning from a friend so he will help set me up and I will go from there. The porting yes. Really the only thing I won't be doing is the cage painting but there is a good chance he will need a hand holding up the pieces. It will be painted in two halves and then I will weld them together and touch up the last two weld joints.

I hope that's motivation for you.

Almost got to fire it today. A pesky crank trigger mount took up a few hours of time so I didn't get to finish all the other little things. Anyway, we did get the crank trigger bracket made! Timing belt is on and tensioned, turbo is on and ready. Got the IC pipes mocked up, just need Brian to weld them and the bungs on the intake. Do some last little wiring, fill her up with fluids and turn the key. Can't wait to hear it run! This has been a way bigger project than I first expected, especially in such a short time frame. Sorry, no pics today. I will say, it looks like a V8 is in there with all the FMIC pipes and everything. Not much room to play with.

Thursday is turn the key day! If I had 30 more minutes today I could have tried to fire it. I just needed gas but didn't have the time to go get it. Everything is pretty much done, just need to finish the one IC pipe and clean up some wires that I had to run.

I am laying in bed now trying to decide if I want to drive back to philly and try to get the car done enough to drive it to SDAC. :( There are a few more loose ends that need finishing and I didn't have time to finish yesterday. I still need to change a leaky brake cylinder, bolt some kind of muffler to the DP, replace the brand new VR that decided to take a ----(immediately), Fix a leaky coolant plug on the water box...And worst of all, ghetto rig my throttle cable with zip ties. A big part of me doesn't feel like driving there to fix that stuff - a big part of me wants to have the car at SDAC, just gotta figure out which part of me is bigger.

Got the tags today and been cruising with my hand out the window lol. I've been getting some thumbs up and ricer fly-by's:D. I really want to replace some wore out suspension components i.e. ball joints, struts and shocks, etc. I balanced the tires today and tomorrow my buddy is gonna do an alignment for me. Been playing around with the tune trying to get the cold start warm-up just right...still needs a little work. Anyways, thats enough for now. :thumb:

Id like to stick with odyssey but money is kinda tight right no so, I'm thinking of trying a lm battery. Where are you guys getting yours and what brand/type are you using(drycell?)

Thanks!

Yup, I just run a lawn tractor battery from Tractor Supply. First one lasted at least 4 years, 2nd one I got from a local garage and it lasted 2 years, I now have one from Tractor Supply again.

Another place to look for small 12v batteries is for motorcycle applications. Supercrackerbox has one in his Charger that is meant to be in a Harley and it's worked fine for the last 2 years including several single digit cold starts this past winter. It's roughly 5"x3"x4".

Carroll... first and foremost, seeing your car in person was one of the highlights of my SDAC experience this year. I know alot of the build took place only ~15 miles from my house, but I just never got the chance to get up there to see it. Truly spectactular. Excellent attention to detail. I can't wait to see it closer to 100%.

Second... my PC680... my 2nd one, has crapped out on me as well. Had to use the booster pack all day at the drags. I think I am as well going to bite the bullit a more conventional battery for reliability's sake. I am really disappointed with it.

Thanks a lot Mike! I'm glad everybody liked the car. I'm gonna slow down a bit now but when it's done it will be AMAZING!

It seems like the PC680 doesn't like being depleted and recharged. Once it's gone down, it's like it will never hold a charge for a long time again. I too am disappointed as this is also my second one. The first one had a bad terminal connnector.:(

Yeah, that battery is a lot more tailored to a car application I think. Plus I have been DD'ing my PC680(lot of starts, cold & hot/radio/headlights/etc). Hopefully I have better luck with a drycell LG battery like others.:o

Still works fine...but the car sits and the battery goes dead often unless i start it daily...so it sits on the battery charger at times. I got mine from batterymart.com i believe. I'll probably end up getting something else if my odyssey craps out. Maybe a battery tender would help?

Well, looks like I may have jumped the gun blaming the PC680. I have a battery drian somewhere. I put the LG battery in, went on a trip and three days later it's down to 8.X volts. Just noticed also that I don't have a short ground strap going from the battery to the frame. Today I will isolate the drain and hopefully stop it. I also charged my PC680 and it's holding at 12.8 volts so far with nothing on it. I'll keep you guys posted. I know Bill Baker runs a 680 with no issues. We must have started his car 40-50 times in the parking lot trying to get his cams "dialed in".....:o

Do the 'light bulb' trick to find the draw, it's and easy one if you've got just one person. Solder a couple short pieces of wire to a 12V bulb you pulled from a TM inst cluster. Disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery (That's the BLACK wire right Marra:p?) and bridge it with the bulb. The light will go on with the load. Then from the fuse box, pull one at a time till the light goes out. Simple and fun:D

UPDATE:

Had to step away from the car for awhile. Just had more important things going on in my life and I really put myself in a hole financially getting the car ready for SDAC. I'm slowly stepping back in and this time I won't set myself back in order to meet a deadline. That being said....I'm excited to get back in!

I still have few small things to clean up and sort out but things look promising. I went to Brian's yesterday and finally got the Lokar throttle cable installed. It turned out really nice. We cut off a factory plastic throttle cable bracket and tig'd it to the Accufab TB. We needed it to pull from the front because of the way the TB was installed and having that plastic eccentric made this possible. Brian put the cable end(the part that has the set screw for the cable)into the lathe and machined it down to a small ball like the factory cable end so we could just put it in the plastic eccentric like factory. Worked like a charm. I used a TB cable bracket for a mustang and attached it to radiator bracket and it worked perfect! Now I have full sweep of the throttle. I'll post some pics when I get back so you can visualize what i'm talking about.

Also got a little tuning done but nothing major because I had 87 gas in the tank since I was only running 6ps(started pinging). We did get the 2-step working good. :D I installed a grainger and turned the boost up to about 11-12 and put some 93 gas in the tank when I got home, even un-tuned and running pig rich, it now will smoke both tires in 2nd at any time and 3rd tries to break loose. That is with a stock turbo. This thing is gonna be an animal! :eyebrows:

A few things still need to be worked out:

1. Need to find out why the ECU isn't working my tach or allowing me to adjust the cam crank advance value.:confused2::banghead: Hopefully I can get this worked out over the phone with the BigStuff3 tech line without having to send my ECU back. Leo @ BS3 has been helping me so i'm confident we can firgure it out Monday....****fingers crossed*****

2. Weld the new bobble strut bracket onto the K-frame

3. Tune and turn up the boost!

Hopefully I can get the first three done before Cecil Invasion Day and do the 3rd there. Huge thanks again to Brian for helping me out again! There are so many custom parts and details in this build and I gotta give credit to B for all the guidance and suggestions. Anybody on the east coast that need quality, professional work just go to Brian. More to come!

Thanks for the update. I for one appreciate your drive to finish it before SDAC. Although I only saw it from afar it was nice speaking with you.

Okay, looks like Cecil Fall invasion will be the first trip down the track. I know a lot of you (myself included) are looking forward to some numbers! A 25 page thread with no Dyno or track #'s suck, lol. BUT, it still hasn't even been a year since I bought this car with no engine or trans so I think i'm on schedule.

I got the tach working(thanks Pat). Just had to re-solder the board and it was fine. Just need to get the new bobble strut bracket welded in. I'm looking forward to doing a bunch data logs so I can work on the tune. :thumb:
