How much does a bare 555 or 520 weigh? Complete transmission minus clutch/flywheel. Anyone weigh one?

I can pickup an A523 pretty easily. I'd guess in the 75-85lb range ?

If it weighs close to a 568, Then it weighs about 125lbs. I shipped on crated at 145lbs.

Curious thought, how much would a fully loaded A-413 tranny weigh?

They always ended up being just under 150# crated for me too on the couple I've shipped and had shipped to me.

i think i remember weighing some..

manual trannies with no fluid and no clutch/flywheel etc were ~80 lbs.

a-413 with converter and some fluid was over 150lbs.

This is by memory, and apples to oranges because a converter full of fluid weighs a lot. Take it for what its worth.

I just picked up a converterless 604 yesterday to put in the aries trunk and if *I* have trouble picking one up, i do think its close to 150 lbs. It was hard.

Never weighed one but I know the 555 is quite a bit heavier than the 525.

Aha, figures. I'm having a ----- of a time trying to separate a short block from an A413. Any pointers? Both are kinda laying on the ground....

Did you skip a bolt? dont forget the one in the back of the block under the starter.

Did you unbolt the dust shield from the bellhousing? 2 10mm bolts.

Did you unbolt the converter? 4 18mm bolts in the flywheel. You CAN leave the converter attached to the flexplate and pull the tranny off, but it has to be STRAIGHT off or the converter hub will jam in the pump and not want to move/damage the pump.

108 lbs shipped weight in a cardboard box with packing material for an A555.

The converter and everything is still attached. All the bolts have been removed, it's just difficult to separate as it's hung up on the converter. Suppose I'll try and get a hoist and lift it apart.

Thanks for the weights, that does help. Does the 520 weigh about the same as a 555 or a little less maybe?

Much, much more. I delivered a 413 across the border to a guy and a plastic bin with the 413 was much heavier than the stick transmissions I have, even minus the converter.

If you're having trouble getting the motor and trans apart, you must have missed something. Make sure the converter is unbolted from the flex plate, you DO NOT want to leave the converter hanging off the engine when you remove it. Just too easy to damage the front seal doing that. Other than that if the bolts are all taken out and you didn't miss any it should come right apart. I know when I was pulling the motor out of my brother's rampage with the auto trans, I missed the bolt that mounts the starter bracket to the engine, with that bolt still in there, the motor was going nowhere.

Hmmm, I'll have to take another look. How does one remove the converter from the flywheel with the transmission still in place? How does the tin dust shield come off?

That's the converter inspection plate. You remove the bolts at the bottom of the inpection plate and I had to loosen the motor/transmission mounting bolts on my brother's 83. Then with a little convincing the inspection plate slides out the bottom. Then you rotate the crank until you see the torq converter bolts and remove them through the hole the inspection plate covered. Pretty simple, although I was surprised at how much of a fight that inspection plate put up on my brother's rampage. I know on my 440 it was a few bolts and the cover just falls off.

depends on how big/strong you are. ~85 lbs. Easy to take for granted when you happen to be big enough and strong enough. We dont want anyone hurting themselves!
