View Full Version : Billet 6061 Carrier bearing fixture for equal length drive shaft

CSXT802

Everyone has talked about the NS1 carrier bearing for the factory equal length set up. The one on my CSX-T is failing. While I do have a good spare shaft with bearing. I wanted to make something better, that would help the people in the community who want to save their equal length setup. After months of waiting. I got the call from the machine shop telling me my fixtures were ready. I wanted a fixture that can be removed for easy bearing replacement. My machine shop needs a minium order of 40 units for them to tool up and make more. So if the intrest is there I'll try to get a group together. If not I guess this project dies here. I don't mean to sound cold but I have laid out alot of my own money. On the chance there will be enough intrest to recoup it. On that note here are some pics.

Beautiful piece Darren. I'l be in for at least 1 probably 2 or 3 so I can make everything equal length. I wonder if it will fit thet tc's equal length set up, I don't see why not.

I would honestly say though, your not going to get 40, I'd guess maybe 10, 15 at the most.

That is really neat. Something like that may be worth it to some of use who run unequal length setups just for the fact that we wouldn't need two axles in the trunk any longer.

Well If I can get close the 40 I'll go ahead. But if I can't get close this is a dead issue and I'll cut my losses. Unless one our vendors find an intrest in these. One will be in my car for sure. :thumb:

The owner of the shop to said he needs 40 unit minium to tool up. So thats what I'm shooting for. If I fall short, I can ask him he would be willing to.

Is that bearing thats on the shaft pressed on which is why you needed to have a slot on the new peice you tighten around the bearing?

Also, the bearing, i wouldn't need it....well, not that i wouldn't need it, i have a great account set up with a vendor in my area who gives me good deal on bearings as i order alot from them....is it possible to get the fixture only??

Maybe more people would get them, i assume the bearing cost 40 bucks?

let me know, maybe i can help you out with the cost of the bearings...what is the bearing number?

Tom, If you want to source your own bearing thats fine, but they arn't the big dollar item. Thats why I went ahead with this. The factory bearing is an odd ball. The one in the fixture is common and inexpensive. The bearing is a press fit on the shaft just like the factory bearing. The clamping fixture lets you remove it for easy bearing replacement ie: bearing puller.

You let me borrow it for afew days and I can probably beat the price your getting them made for. It's a simple 3 set-up job and would only take about 10-15 min. to make it if you want to get them at a better price. Just an offer, otherwise it's a nice looking part and is he using a heli-coil on the threaded hole?

The price is the same @ $90, but now it covers the shipping. I'm still doing a 40 unit order. I'm sure I'll have no problem selling the rest of them. Also by going through Bruce It keeps this whole project within the community. I'm sure he would be willing to do smaller batches of the fixture if more people want them. So for $90 shipped you'll get the fixture, bearing , and hardware.

Chris, I have your bar as well in one of the TC's, it's getting kinda 'clunky' when I shake the rear from side to side. Feels like a wheel bearing that's loose but they are not. Ideas?

Alan,

check the rod ends , they may have started loosening up and might need to be replaced. the bronze bushing can be pressed out and reused in a new set. If the rod ends are not worn you can try loosening the jam nuts and twisting the bar slightly to preload it.

As far as vibration goes, I doubt we will notice more. Alum. generally abosorbs more vibration than steel. This is most noticed when replacing a steel drivshaft with an Alum. one. People normally report less drivetrain vibration after the swap.

On the drive home to cali I raced a Turbo GMC pick up went 120 he gave up at 100. then I ran out of gas and had to call AAA :( but it was all good I got 2 gallons of gas for my trip free :D :D :D :D

I take your race description to mean that a GMC Syclone and you went for a little spirited freeway pull. He jumped out 25+ car lengths on you and gave up at 100, then you pulled a ricer flyby at 120:confused: Not saying a turbo Mini can't be made faster than a Syclone but the van you just bought from Johnny is stock right? No how, no way gonna keep up with a Syclone.:D

Not true. It is the opposite. Aluminum is stiffer so the drive shaft deflects less and there is less vibration. Ride an aluminum mountain bike and then hop on a chromoly one. The aluminum one will jar your teeth out.

After doing some consideration of using one of these on my car I came to realize that this *WILL NOT* work on an L-body. If so I'd like to know how because the L-body intermediate shaft is shorter than a G/P/K-body and since that's the case the G/P/K bracket will not work nor will the L- body since it's totally different....

Someone prove me wrong,.... please!

What if your using an 555/568 in an L-body. I know they use the small spline 525 stock and that carrier is different. I'm just asking because I've never owned an L-body. I did have an 1986 Turbo Z that had a 525 in it and that used the L-body style carrier. I swaped over to this style carrier when I put a 555 in it. This was years ago.

That would be the L-body/early style carrier.Ok, that verifies things. That is an L-body shaft with the A-555 output. I obviously have the A-555 trans in my car.
I take it that the big car bracket won't bolt up to my setup. If so, it is not a big deal. I can modify the bearing setup to work with the L-body bracket:thumb:.
