View Full Version : 2.6 share bellhousing pattern with 3.0?

I've heard before that the 2.6L 4 cylinder junk engine and the 3.0L V6 actually share the same bell housing. Also, the transmission numbers are similar (a470 for 2.6 and a670 for 3.0) and it's not like chrysler to waste all those 2.6 transmissions when they switched over to the 3.0. So, if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd love to know if a transaxle that fits the 3.0 would fit a 2.6. Thank you!

Interesting, never heard that....

Not finding an A543?

No, not that. The 2.6 equipped fwd stuff never had a 5 speed... I'm more curious if an a543 will work on the 2.6.

I know for certain that the 470 doesnt have the cutout for the water pipe like all 3.0's do, but i dont know if that means anything about the bolt locations.

It will be interesting to find this out. I keep waiting for someone to turbo the 2.6 but so far noone has done it here. I did see one ~85 convertible on some DIY EFI kind of forum that put in a starion turbo setup and it seemed awesome, but that's all ive ever seen. To me, its kind of silly because the 2.6 is just as strong as the 2.2/2.5 and can make similar power on stock parts.

I keep thinking i'd like to be the first but i have so many projects and i think the 2.6 i have has no compression and who knows what else wrong with it. I keep telling myself i need to use what i have before i go collecting more junk so the 2.6 is way on the back burner.

I know it's not the best thing in the world... but it's a lot cheaper than a storage unit and I can sell the atx out of it to someone who wants to fix up an old K-car drop top for a lot more than the little van cost.

They are way different. There'd be a lot more Conquest's w/ 3.0 turbo swaps otherwise ;)

What kind of car did it come in, and I can tell you what will fit?

And, if I'm getting that it came from an 81-89 Caravan or K-car...then, it would be a narrowblock engine...
which in turn would be the same as a DSM tranny I believe (maybe an AWD swap :p)

But, if its from almost anything else, then, its a wideblock, and I don't believe there are any other FWD wideblock Mitsus.

Tell me what you have though, I have a list I can check out.

The car in question is a 1986 Plymouth Voyager LE with a 2.6L engine. The transmission I'd want to put on it would be from a 1990-1994 3.0L V6 Shadow/Daytona/LeBaron/Sundance.

Well we got the van running pretty good... now to find out about that transmission! I've looked and looked with no success... :(

;) The 2.6 is a lot taller.

what are you looking to make that 2.6 in your van a 5 speed? Im guessing thats what the point of all this is? if so, nothing. Sorry to seem blatent lol, its just crap ya gotta live with. Of course you could do a adapter plate hahaha. Or of course make that lil mini rear wheel drive and use a SQ trans lol.

Yeah, I was trying to see if the a543 from a 3.0 v6 would work on the 2.6L engine because yeah... I wanted to make it a 5 speed.

Now once I figure out if/when I need to move and get that accomplished I'll probably be selling this thing if anybody is interested.
