Look what showed up in my garage this morning. This is a 79 Dodge Colt that I sold a couple years ago during a hard time. The owner had a thread going on turbododge, and ran into some tough times himself, so I got it back, I sold my white caravan and my drag car 68 Dart to make room for it. He has put alot of time and fabrication into it, and I am anxious to finish it up. I t will have a 8v 2.5 and a 904 torqueflite to get it going, Im sure it will change after it is running and enjoyed for a while. I want to drive this car everyday like I did for years, but I want it to run as good as my Caravan, dont think I will have any problems reaching that goal for now.I took a couple quick pictures for now, while take a bunch of better ones later and post up.

The motor is empty, just for mock up, I am gonna take the adapter and try to get a quote on having some copies made, and then offer them on here. It needs wirnig, so will probably try to use a van harness for now.

I am gonna try KennedyEngineering , a buddy sent an SRT4 motor to them and they made the adapter to a VW transaxle, and now offer it for sale of thier site, so maybe they will do it for this, and atleast people that want them could get purchase it from them.:thumb:

They should make them based off of the /6 bellhousing. Those things get thrown away all the time and the bolt pattern is the only thing that keeps them from being used. The internals should interchange between the V-8 and /6 models. Some how I would up with 3 /6 904's. Either way cool project. I've been keeping an eye out for a 72 model myself.

Isn't there already a bellhousing from a 2.5 dakota that will work for what you want to do?

Not for an auto. Its been said there were 3 or 4 904's built for the early 2.5's but they were test transmissions and that a 2.5 auto in a Dakota was a dog.

I do have the baby 904 auto out of the car, I was lookin at it last night, should be able to use it for a conversion pretty easy. I do have a nice polished valve cover and headman header for the 1.6 that came out of the car if anyone knows of anybody interested.

Hmm, looks like a fun one. Id like to do something similar with an early 60's dart/lancer.

So the white van is gone.. is the brown van yours? Any more pics/info on it?

Wow, I just said that the other day, I got a weird look from the guy I said it to, but I think it would be waaaayyy cool!

It is a long story, It was rapidtransits van, he thought he got over it when the tranny started acting up, and I got it cuz mine was apart for an engine freshin up, then he wanted a van again so he got my white van. The brown one has an 89 daytona Garrett on it, a two piece intake and a Daytona intercooler on it, I put a rmvb in it and have been runnin the sh!t out of it for months. He is working on the other van now.

I have all the megasquirt for this car, but I have to admit I and scared to death of it, so unless someone is willing to help me out with the install and gettting it up and running, I probably will just put a complete van harness in it.....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

03-30-2011, 04:33 PM
the megasquirt is really not that bad once you start messing with it. i was a little scared at first when i did mine. don't get me wrong, i had plenty of help from dj(even though he is 2500 miles away). just make sure you do plenty of reading and map everything out before you start. not sure how much research you have done so far, but if you go on www.msextra.com any information you could need is in the documentation section and there is a very good message board on the site too. what kind of ignition are you looking to run? who did you buy it from(from what i've seen the diy and rs-autosport pinning are different on the db37)?

How is that motor mount attached to the front of the block (front being from FWD, below the distributor)?

Also, is that your dakota too?

Everything was mocked up using a dakota block, just had to drill the cargo vans motor and tap them to get it to work. Yes 99 dakota r/t 5.9, how does it look with bogarts on it, 325-50-15 nitto 555's on it

Those tires on the dakota are serious business. I bet that thing is a lot easier to hook up than this Colt ever will be.

Thanks for the info on the block mods, ive never actually looked closely at a dakota block but im thinking about putting one of my car blocks into a dakota i have.

Looking good!

Yes, crank and bell housing adapter, uses an 8 bolt flex plate(426 hemi/440 sixpack) and I have a hughes 8 inch converter in it, the converter stall at 5000 behind a 410 smallblock, just a starting point, but I hope it stalls around 3600 or so. 904 has a turbo action brake in it.

50 trim turbonetics to start and get it all running and road worthy, I have a t67 garret I am going to try on it later, probably have to get it going with a little bottle im thinking? I have and 8 inch coverter in it that stalled 5000 rpm behind a 410ci small block, so i have no idea what it will in here, im hoping around 3500-3700 or so, if it does i should be able to grab the tranny break and build full boost,26psi or so, and lauch on it.

Probably... what exhaust wheel and housing is it? I have a t67 with a .96 a/r and p-trim wheel, i dont think it would EVER spool on any 2.5 i own. :p I know they make put much smaller housings on some of them.

Here is the t67 specs, i have both .82 and .63 hot side for it

ok so yours is a t3 turbine side with a stg5 wheel and you have a .63 housing for it. That's going to be tough on that engine but the loose converter will help. What was the spool like on the 2.4L?

The upside is it will make as much power as you'll probably ever want to. :D

MILKCARTON
04-25-2011, 09:15 AM
With the .63 hot side on it it would start making boost at 2500, he ran 30 psi as max boost. I know it would suck as a street turbo on an 8 Valve but with the converter and tranny brake it would probably be ok(maybe?). He bought the .82 hotside for it, but hated how it lagged on the street. I probably will never use it for the steet, but my turbo is so easy to swap out that i am gonna try it at the strip once I get the car running and driving.

---------- Post added at 07:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:14 AM ----------

I know the 50 trim turbo I have on the car is not the best one to have on it either....

If it spooled on the 2.4 that early, maybe it wont be too bad on yours. The 2.4 probably had a little higher compression and a little better flow, but probably not by much at that rpm. Id be interested to find out how it does on yours.

As for the 50 trim, maybe its not the best, depends on your goals, but its definitely not bad! As long as its a stg2 or 3 turbine it ought to be a good all-arounder until you want to make 400+hp.

Thats about what I figured, it is all the stuff from the cargo, that ran 13.17 in denver. With the better exhaust header and 4" plenum and full 3" exhaust, and 750+ less weight, 904 trans and converter and rwd it should be fun, I should be able to launch on a good amount of bottle also without crossing my fingers

I just realized i have an 87 dakota with a 3.9/auto in it that im thinking about 2.5 swapping, so let me know if you get some kind of adapter plates thing rolling. Id like to swap to 5spd but if the adapter plate is cheaper i'd definitely consider it.

MILKCARTON
04-25-2011, 09:36 PM
My buddy has a bellhousing in his oval track car, small block mopar to t5 Mustang tranny, so really with my adapter you should be able to put that 5 speed behind a 2.2/2.5, just have to use a hemi/ 440+6 flywheel I think

Vigo
04-25-2011, 10:15 PM
the only 5spd swap id do would probably be the factory one, and even that is iffy.. i guess i just dont want the 5spd that bad unless i come across a parts truck for $200-300.. But if i could buy the 2.5 adapter for something reasonable id just go that way for simplicity, and that way my fiancee would not refuse to drive it too. hahah

lovin the colt! kinda wish ida turbo/4'd mine. i did a 360/727/8-3/4. had to stiffen up the suspension and fab subframe connectors (along with everything else) but it hooks awesome. didnt wanna cut it up,so i had the local spring shop make me an extra leaf for each side. that raised the rear enough to allow for 26x8.5-15's on draglights. no rub whatsoever. one of the front coils broke while i was trailering it to the muffler shop...so i pirated the struts off a later model z24 cavalier. filled the cartridges with fresh oil. i cut the lower spring mount off the cav strut, and welded it on top of the colt's. used the springs also. you'd have to see it leave to believe it. even with that heavy small block-it raises the front, plants the rear...and stays that way until i let off after it goes through the traps. i expect your traction to excellent with a lil effort.
love the colts....just dont break that windshield! there aint one to be had anywhere!
would love to show pics of mine...but they wont let me post pics for some reason.
