Does anyone know what the clear is called that Chrysler uses to go on top of the black paint to make it look flat? They used this on the blacked out hoods on some cars, and on the Daytona stripe on my 05 Ram. And does anyone know where I could score some in a spray can?

I would contact your local paint supply store. they should be able to mix you a batch of flat clearcoat. Many auto parts stores are selling it now as well.

Being I work for Oreilly's I may see if we can come up with some. I would like to know what they call it, and a paint code would be even better!

Wow, that would be cool. I didn't think they had that. There was a Challenger at the Mopar Nats a few years ago that was flat black, I just assumed it was an enamel paint job.

I'm not 100% sure a bout a semi-gloss clear, but I have seen paint that is a semi or satin gloss.

It was called "rallye black". I can't remember who made it. Seems to me it was either Glasurit or RM.

For patch work, a flat black paint just doesn't look the same when flat clear was originally used.

You just put flattening agent in the clear. Use it all the time at work. The more you add, the more flat it gets. Do lots of test samples!

The flat black on your Daytona package is likely a vinyl overlay, not paint. It is on my '08 Charger Daytona anyway.

+1

Or you could do the cheap method and add hardener to black base.
Saves money on not buying clear.

he's right, I mixed the black for my trim on my daytona custom with flatener, pour some of it in, spray if not liked add more.

just a straight black paint(that needs cc over it) would look somewhat flat(or semi gloss) w/o clear on it, but that isnt good for UV protection

This is the proper clear to use... it says plastic, but can be used on metal parts... it just has flex agents already added into it. It's a 4:1 clear.. using spray can clear will never give you good results compared to spraying it with a gun.. spray can paint is usually enamel or lacquer (no hardener) so it never lasts as long. A quart of the matt clear with hardener and a pint of the black basecoat was $100. I'm using this on my T-top trim on my Daytona Shelby

I used the same (clear and flattener) from House of Kolor. Great stuff.
