I'm wondering where I could read about 60s and 70s Chrysler wagons? I would love to have one for tow/family truckster duty. I would like to get a jump on this so I will be ready for some SDAC towing and south west USA traveling in a couple years.

Suggestions?

Allpar or wagonsofsteel.com Ive been wanting a old bbody wagon for quite sometime now.

Thanks for the wagons of steel link. The pic looks like something I could get into, but there isn't a whole lot of info on there for what I'm after.

The only thing I don't like about allpar for this research is that they don't do a good job of breaking down the models by which were offered as a wagon. I guess I will just need to dig deeper on their site.

There aren't any good Mopar specific wagon sites/forums that I know of . Most 4-door DPCD models were offered as a wagon (except Imperial & post '66 A-body) any idea what you're looking for ?? A/B/C/F/M body ??? Any particular year ???

I've been searching for a '71-'73 Coronet Crestwood w/Pistol Grip forever .....

Wow, that is a nice wagon!

Did Mopar ever make one which has the rear facing seat, or two rows of seating? I have a big dog and want to take it along with a couple kids on super long road trips with my summers off someday.

I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but I can't tell you much about the older cars by body code or anything so that is why I want to start my research now. :(

Yes the B-body and C-body wagons could be had with rear facing 3rd seat. I personally like the 71-78 B-body wagons (Satellite, Coronet). The C-bodys (Monaco, Fury*) are too big for my taste. *I think after 1975 the B-body wagons were called Furys under the Plymouth line. If you watch ebay nice wagons turn up from time to time.

I also like the 94-96 GM big wagons. They had the LT1 corvette engine and you can find decent Caprice and Roadmasters out there. They were also rated 25mpg highway.

Thanks for the info. I really want one with the rear facing seat so this is going to work out well.

I did not realize that the LT1 roadmaster and caprice cars were rated that highly for mpgs, but I'm really trying to keep it Mopar on this one.

I had a 74 and 76 Town and Country. The 440 was good for 16 mpg on the highway or 18 going over the edge of the Grand Canyon. I used it to tow the scout trailer on camp outs. I would keep up with the Scout Masters quad four? I still have a front clip minus the left fender and side skirts from a 76 Newport.
Yes they had the rear facing seat. You are going to find good ones in the usual places Fl, Ca, Az. Oh, the 440 exhaust mani burn the valve cover gaskets in no time flat. And the carb floats are plastic covered foam that sink and suck gas. Mine had a copper float that was never made (long story about my wife's uncle that started the congressional investigation on the foam floats.
I gave it to a friend's kid with the warning to not mess with the tilt wheel (I had one burn the wiring because of a short there). Well he roasted the whole car! Factory
Chrome wheels from the Newport, new carpet, new hand stitched front seat, new vinyl wood trim. Went to the junkyard.

I forgot to mention that my 76 T&C had 4 hash marks. two chevys, one Ford, and my wife added a Volvo. My wife totaled the Volvo and the TC wouldn't have any damage except the bumper shock shattered and the bumper fell. That took out the lf fender and grill. No frame damage.
BUT it died under the care of a teenager.

My 74 had rusting doors so I went junking. I found the 76 that was imaculate from the windshield back. I found something under the seat with the owners name and called. She had swerved and hit 2 chevys and a ford. Insurance company totaled it. Absolutely NO rust and no scratches. But that vinyl really fades fast. I think I paid 220 for it and put the 74 front on it. After my wife hit the Volvo, I got a 76 Newport for another 200 and put on the fender and grill. That one had a factory sunroof and the factory chrome wheels and rear fender skirts.
I had a 64 Dodge 50th anniversary vert that I bought for 50 that had a blown engine. The tire shop I worked at switched the whole drive train, rebuilt the brakes and suspension and installed a new top in 12 hours during the slow summer. These cars definitely didn't have crunch zones. I rear ended a chevy with that and totalled the chevy. The only damage was where my wife's knee hit the dash.

Its blue interior 6 passenger. 360 2 barrel automatic drivetrain. I will get a photo of it and get it posted as soon as I can. The most popular toys by Santa will be encountered on a Big W Catalogue (https://www.catalogueau.com/big-w/) Christmas sale.

As far as fuel mileage is concerned, you could try a 46RE swap or do what the Pro-Touring Mopar guys are doing and go with either a Gear Vendors add on OD unit or a Keisler automatic (GM) swap. I don't see why you couldn't get 20mpg out of a 440 C Body wagon.

The Gear Vendors/Keisler option in the Pro-Touring cars always makes me laugh. If they drove the cars 100k (yeah , that'll happen) they'd still never recoup the cost of the transmisson in gas mileage....
The 518 option with the JW Ultra Bell isn't a bad plan , but a Lock-up 727 with a 2.76 axle will get you 90% of the way there . Remember , if you have a C-body the 28" tall tires keep the RPM down .
I've had more than my share of C-bodies , 18 mpg (roadtrip) would not be hard to hit with a little jetting/tuning . City mileage , don't ask .....

Yes that paint code is HT6.

There is nothing like driving a classic wagon. They are so much better than today's suvs and minivans it's not even comparable.

I found a 79 valiant wagon at the junkyard today. It was a little dirty but in pretty good shape, and still complete! It has the 225 "super six" with automatic. Are the super six parts worth anything? I know the intake, carb and kickdown linkage are different. I would have offered cash if I saw somebody towing it in.

The Valiant's last year was '76 and they didn't make wagons for many years before that. I'm guessing it was a Volare (or Aspen) wagon.

I had a '79 LeBaron as my first car and it had the Super Six. It basically was a 2bbl Slant Six. They weren't that rare. By then the manifold was iron and not aluminum so it's not quite a cool. Still a neat find!

Things to bear in mind...

Chrysler never made much of their cars towing capabilities, as far as I can tell, this is because they didn't have any. You look up some of these massive older cars and discover max towing is 2000lb... ergo, don't buy one unless tow rating is proved to you by door sticker or other solid evidence.

The minivan cD of 0.42 was trumpeted as being lower than any full size wagon at the time, or in the few years prior to introduction.... as far as I can determine, this is true. In other words every wagon you look at from that era is going to be an aerodynamic nightmare.

I've heard of mileage capabilities in the 20-25 range from the /6 RAM wagons and vans, the tow rating starts at 5000lb in those I believe. You can get some pretty pimp wagon options too.

If you really, really want TOWING and you really really want mpg, you can get a Buick Roadmaster specced for 7000lb and 30 mpg highway with the LT1 has been claimed.

And if you just want something "decentish" on towing, then don't sneeze at 1st and 2nd gen minivans with the 3.0 and A670, you can get up to 3500lb, which is generally enough for a project + dolly, covers a lot of pop-up trailers (There's some 25ft beasts with "toy" racks these days) and you can get a few smaller and lighter hardsided trailers. I can get 25mpg average out of mine, seen 27-28 highway, 28 highway is more common without a whole lot of effort with the 2nd gens due to slightly better aerodynamics.

Another hauler with medium towing plus MPG from the General is The Pontiac Aztec (yeah it's fugly but that fastback shape pays off), annnd the Saturn mini that slasky has (Forgot model)

Aside from those, Cherokees with BT diesel motors....

I have a '78 Dodge Magnum XE with the factory Class 3 hitch and it was rated at 5000lbs and it's a "midsize" B Body. The '74 New Yorker I have could have been equipped (stated in the owner's manual and sales brochures) for towing up to 7000lbs. Not sure where you got your info on the older Chrysler products from.

Actually tow ratings are not standardized and have been defined by each manufacturer. This has been getting out of hand in the case of the tow ratings for Full Size trucks and now SAE is stepping in and is establishing a test for all the manufacturers to go by so that vehicles can be compaired apples to apples. The Ram has consistantly been lower than the Silverado and F Series but they have been conservative on how they figured it. I guess time will tell when the standard goes into effect in a year or so.

My wife's Dodge Journey R/T AWD with the tow package is rated at 3500lbs properly equipped. We have been getting a little over 21mpg running 80mph on the interstate with it (not towing of course!). It isn't quick by any means (3.5L/61TE rated at 235hp/323lb-ft and being over 4000lbs) but it is quick enough for her driving, AWD so it is safe in the winter and rain, and handles nice with the standard "sport" suspension and 19" wheels.

Well that's not bad, maybe it's the paucity of references that gave me that idea. The few I found in older magazine reviews had really low ratings, B body based cars included.

My wife's saturn vue gets mid to high 20s for gas mileage not towing. It gets around 17 MPG towing my SC on a dolly at 75 to 80 mph. It is rated at 3500 pounds and has the Honda V6 engine. IIRC it has around 250 hp and 250 torque. It has a lot of power for its size and tows very well.

Don't look too bad, but would have to go in person and poke at it with a stick, in case it's a "Miss Belvedere" type project.

Here is a picture of a 1970 AMC Rebel SST wagon that my older brother owns. We have repaired the brakes and put new tires on it, but that is about it.

edit: Apparently it is not possible to post pictures any longer...

That thing is cool enough to even make the Griswald's jealous... It would be so cool to have one of those, but where would I keep it???

yeah , just remember to be draging the brakes when you see the transport trucks comeing up to pass you doing 70 + mph because if your not draging the brakes your going to exit the highway backwards , trailer first

Scratch the shiny airstream, saw a local-ish Argosy almost painted to match. (Beig-ey/cream-ey with a brown-can't-quite-tell-if woody stripe)
