Here is my 1989 Chrysler Daytona Shelby T2 T-top car that i picked up on March, 8, 2008. I came accross this car from a guy selling an '89 ES Daytona online and when i went to look at the car (this was summer of 2007) and i saw the blue Shelby parked behind the barn, so inquired about it, but the guy said it was his friends and wasn't for sale... so i kept in touch with the guy and made sure i would be the first in line when his friend decides to sell it and that day finally came! The guy delivered the car because it was in no shape to be driven... it was parked for years because of a "seized engine" so the guy said, but i ended up getting the car running and it smoked like crazy! So i pullled the head and it had a valve guide that dropped and a chunk of it got into the cylinder and wreched the head/piston on #3 cyl

Fast forward to summer of 2009.. I decided to start on the car (finished my red Daytona so moved on to this one) since the motor was in need of a rebiuld i just decided to put the original motor aside and put in a low K motor that i had.. it was a 88T1 2.2L motor with only 80,000km's on it, so i cleaned it up and put all new gaskets/seals in it as well as tons of detailing.... here are a bunch of pics of the process. every nut bolt and washer was detailed and the entire suspension was rebuilt.. new rack, poly bushings, spicer inner and outer tie rod ends, spicer ball joints, sensa crap struts, upper strut mounts, calipers, rotors, pads, brake hoses, wheel bearings.

Here are the original Pumpers getting painted the original Sparkle Silver in base/clear. I put Falcon P205/50/16 tires on it for this summer, but for next summer i'm going to put the original P205/55/16 tires on, because these ones dont look right in my opinion.

I took it to the track shortly after i got it back on the road.. my best run was 15.3 @ 91MPH and thats full weight (including spare) and the only upgrade was a grainger valve set to 13psi.. not too bad! i would have gotten better times if i didnt spin all thru 1st and 2nd.

Here are some more pics of the car from this summer... i pretty much just shined up the original paint as best as i could, so it looked presentable. I put over 10,000km's on the car this year and it never gave me an ounce of trouble, :thumb:

Since winter has arrived here the car was taken off the road and now im starting to tackle the bodywork/paint on the car... i started taking the car apart... I removed all the T-top trim, which will get repainted satin black again... what a PITA to remove this trim! same goes for the rear 3 piece wing. I removed the glass from the door as well as the door handle and lower side skirts... next will be the rear bumper, doors and front bumper to be removed... Im going to be painting it right back to original and i already have the decal kit on order from PI

I will keep posting updates as this project goes on... It will be getting painted in Dupont chroma-premier Base/clear, which will get wetsanded and polished.

Thanks! yeah im doing all the bodywork and when it comes to painting it my Dad will do it... he's a bodyman/painter by trade.

haha yeah i checked out your project log on here and you got the twin to mine! i've got the Canadian "chrysler" black sheep though, :D

Here is my Red Daytona that's pretty much all finished-

Here's another update. I got the rear bumper removed tonight... 13 out of the 17 bolts snapped off in the process, so i'll have to come up with an idea on how to make/modify new brackets to hold the rear bumper on... I have no clue why Dodge put all the studs to the outside.. it would have made more sense to have the studs on the inside so they would be out from the elements, :confused2:

I also removed the rear side glass.

Awesome job. That car has come a long way since you've gotten it. A lot of them like yours usually end up in the JY if no one shows interest and takes them in. If your red one is any indicator this is going to be another beautiful blue t-top 89.
That interior came out really nice too. Its amazing what some cleaning can do. I remember rescuing a dash pad from a 91-92 camaro back in the day because they were known for cracking. I got it cheap cause it looked like a solid piece of dirt but had no cracks anywhere. When I was done with it the darn thing was so nice it looked out of place in my car. Good luck with it. Looks like a solid car to begin with for sure.

Yeah i'd like to think i saved this car from being sent off to the wreckers or being parted out eventually... it's hopes weren't looking to good when i first brought it home.. it had four flat tires, no brakes, blown struts/shocks, engine and paint job no good and filthy dirty! When i first got it home i jacked it up and the inner tie rod end was so worn it was just about to separate.. it had almost an inch of play .

haha yeah it's hard to believe sometimes on how clean things will come!

oh another thing i forgot to add about this car... it originally came as a non A/C car, but it had dealership installed A/C when it was bought new by it's first owner... it still has the sticker under the hood saying when it was installed. you can also see in some pictures above there is a "air conditioned by service and parts division Mopar" sticker on the drivers side back glass. as you can see i removed the A/C because i want the car to be back to original, but im leaving those stickers in place just because it's neat part of history towards the car

I think you should leave the a/c. It was installed by the dealer so in a way it is original.

I know in some car shows, there is a class for original cars with add-on parts that were available at the time the car was made.

I kept all the A/C stuff that i removed... the compressor was blown anyways. It's neat that someone paid to get this installed back when the car was new, it must have cost a lot for this to get done back in the day!

I like how the tech that installed the A/C put a check mark beside "Airbag system check o.k." haha

The 89's are the best, :thumb: The first year of the common block, 11" brakes, 16" pumpers, new style ground effects and last year of the T-tops and enthusiast seats as well as a few other things...

Thanks! The red one is an 89 as well. I painted the ground effects red tho, so it looks like a 1990 Shelby now.

I just so happen to be doing a little bit of research today and it seems they only made 42 Daytona Shelbys in 1989 without A/C. Blue & 5 spd; this is the second one I've heard of. scrpnwatermelon has the other, but they have different roof options.
I've seen one '89 in person that was a no A/C car, that was a silver Canadian TII that was otherwise loaded (near Niagra).

Nice job on the car btw.

It lists (SPEDO 125 MPH-3776) out of 4741 cars.
So the list should include all exports.

Wow thanks for that info! I didn't realize they made so few without A/C.. The only options my Shelby has are the enthusiast seats, rear wiper with defrost and the T-tops. mine doesn't have cruise control either.. I believe it had the AM/FM cassette infinity 1 stereo in it, but i don't know if that was standard in the Shelby model?

So only 965 were the Chrysler models? A.K.A Canadian cars.

Chrysler, probably. Only Canadian, probably not. Euro cars would also get a Km/h speedo. Lets call them "export" cars.
To add to the confusion, England lists speeds in MPH. Though I don't know if they would sell a LHD car there.

I went and bought the paint today. The Clear alone was was a little over $500. I got 3 quarts of Daytona blue (makes a gallon and a half spray-able once reduced, so i got plenty of paint) and a quart of the Charcoal for the ground effects and upper spoiler. This is all Dupont Chroma-Premier which is there top of the line paint. All together for just the paint was $1100 which is more then i payed for the car, This is with a good discount too

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2582.jpg

For materials alone it will be well over $2000... nobody ever said painting a car is cheap! I also bought Dupont high build primer and sealer.

Well i painted the wing and door handles this weekend... it seems these little parts are always the hardest to do! haha. I had to use the drivers side wing extension from one of my parts cars because the original one off the Shelby wasn't in the greatest of shape. I put the top part of the main wing in high build primer and spot primered the side wing extensions where they needed to be. I then painted the bottom part of the main wing one night (the blue) and flipped it over and painted the top part (charcoal) with the rest of the parts the next day. Painting the main part of the wing is extremely hard to do all in one shot! I wetsanded and polished the top of the wing tonight. The side extensions do not need to be polished because they came out like glass (this clear is beautiful)

That's going to be a sweet car when it's finished man, nice job! Glad that you saved it and didn't part it.

I feel your pain on those studs holding the rear bumper in place, pretty much all of mine broked off too when I tore my Daytona down. What I did was ground the spot weld down holding the stud in the bracket, knock the stud out of the bracket, then I went to the hardware store and got some M6 bolts and tack welded the head of them in place to the bracket, works great.

Keep up the good work man!

Hey, thanks for the ideas! yeah i was thinking something similar to that as well.. those bumper studs are a PITA. These Daytona Shelby's are getting very hard to find nowadays especially here in Canada, since we didn't get as many up here.. most people have parted them out or sent them off to the wreckers over little things, which is sad...

I checked out your Daytona and it looks awesome, :thumb: Awesome work! My friend actually has the twin to your car, same colour and same interior.. his car is a "code 7" Canada show car and has two tags under the hood.. one is the options and the other is the code 7 canada show tag.. so it's most likely a "one of none" car. It was used in 1990 to promote the new 1991 Shelby Daytona and he has most of the history for the car.

Thanks man, it's nice to see more people saving them lately. My car was origanally from British Columbia, it's only been here in Ontario since 2002, that's why the body was as nice as it was, if it was an Ontario car its whole life I doubt it would have as little rust as it did. Keep up the good work man.

I sanded the ground effects tonight and put them in primer.

When I first got the car the sticker on the back of it said Ensign Chrysler in Victoria. I wonder what the origanal MSRP of it was, I'd like to get a hold of that info some how.

Have any pictures of your friends Daytona that is like mine? Be nice to see another one that looks like my car, up until 2 years ago when I found it, I didn't even know that color of interior existed!

I haven't got as much done to the car as i wanted to lately, but i got the bodywork and sanding on the rear bumper finished. It was your typical Daytona urethane bumper... all wavy on top so i used plastic filler and blocked it straight. I also primed it with the plastic high build primer and wetsanded it tonight and it's ready for paint, but i'm not gonna paint in until all the lower ground effects are done being wetsanded, so i can paint all these little parts at once.

If anybody is restoring a T-top car (or any other car with semi gloss trim) this is the proper base/clear paint to use that will last. I got a pint of chroma-base black and a quart of semi gloss plastic (and can be used on metal) flexible Dupont clear coat with the hardener. I took a pic in case anybody wants the part number.

I just spent the last 7hrs wetsanding and polishing the ground effects and bumper... I wetsanded them with 2000grit sandpaper, then 3000grit and power polished with 3M perfect it 1 and 2. If it's nice out tomorrow i'll take a pic of the parts outside.. they came out like glass, :D. I need a new camera...

Just another update.... I painted some of the T-top trim. I started by sanding them with 220grit and puttying where they needed to be, i then put them in flexible high build primer. I wetsanded them with 600grit and then painted them with the base/clear (semi gloss)

Must have been a pain to get that all off without breaking it!

haha yeah it's not the easiest to do, because the stupid window seals are glued into the channels and the rivets to take the trim off is behind the damn seals! These parts look to be made of a brittle fibreglass resin, so they are pretty delicate.. i never broke or wrecked any of the trim luckily! the trim on the door tho is make from ABS plastic and mine were so sun dried that they broke and most of the tabs that hold them on were broken anyways, so i found some OEM ones, which i hope to get soon, :D.

I checked out your Silver T-top Shelby on here and it's lookin' great! if you ever decide to sell that car, please let me know. We'll have to take some pics of our cars togather next summer, :thumb: I've never seen another 89 T-top Shelby around here besides mine so far... i think they have all been wrecked or sent off to the crusher.

Here are a couple pics of the SHELBY decal locations on the door... (from the drivers door) I will measure the passenger side when i get to them, but it's probably 3" from the top of the "Y" but i will make sure anyways. I took these for reference and for anybody else that wants to know exactly where they go on the 1989 cars. I will take more pics of the other decal locations as i get to them (the intercooled turbo ones on the hood as well as the Daytona Shelby and Chysler ones on the back)

-From the front edge of the door to the bottom edge of "S" is 3"
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2677.jpg

-from the bottom edge of the door to the bottom of the Shelby decal is 1-1/4"
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2669.jpg

and here is a pic i took with 3/4" masking tape to give you another reference... as you can see the decal wasn't even put on perfectly straight from the factory.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2668.jpg

Update for Passenger side door... as you can tell the passenger side door decal is in a slightly different spot compared to the drivers side (lower to the body line and closer to the front door edge) I'm obviously not going to replicate this, haha. Here's the pics anyways..

Looking good. Cant wait to see the finished product. Bet it will be GORGEOUS!

Thanks for the compliments! :D They help keep me motivated since i hate bodywork so much!

I got the doors off the car tonight, so i can block them out nicely and paint in the door jambs properly when it comes time to. These doors have no rust, but are FULL of door dents and are dented around the door handle openings (typical Daytona) so they are gonna take alot of work to get back straight. sanding, puttying, blocking and lots of priming are in my future! but it's really the only major bodywork on this car to do... the rest of the body is very straight!

When it comes time to paint the entire car i've got a paint booth i can use and my Dad will be painting it.. i will have the fun job of wetsanding and polishing after. I only paint the small parts like all the stuff already done on here... like the bumpers, ground effects, wing, t-top trim etc. Just in case people are wondering about colour variance from painting all these little parts seperatly... there will be no variance! as long as you use paint from the same can and use the same air pressure and paint technique there will never be a difference in colour.. metallic colours are a little more tricky, but like i said there will be no variance, :thumb:.

Here is the car as of right now... it looks like it belongs on an episode of trailer park boys,

Actually the doors on this car weren't sagged at all believe it or not... Even the door pins were tight, but I bought replacements anyways, since I have the doors off. I can see why they sag over the years tho... These doors are friggen heavy!

I finally got my decal kit in for this car, from Positive Impressions (the original 89 kit with a Shelby window banner) ... stupid Customs held it for a long time! The decal kit looks great and looks to be exactly like the original, :thumb: ...i've just got one question regarding these decals and for other Shelby Daytona owners. Is the charcoal strobe decals supposed to match the colour of the lower charcoal ground effects? because the Charcoal i painted already (the original colour) is MUCH lighter then the charcoal on the decals and i cant really use my car as an example, because all the decals and paint were faded, but they did seem to be the same colour even tho they were faded...

rich tideswell
12-10-2009, 11:58 AM
why not use the decal kit as a way to paint on the strobe. paint the lower area your charcoal color, apply the decal, reshoot the car in blue peel away decal and clear coat the whole shebang?

That sounds like a good idea! it's just i would be kinda worried about the decal leaving adhesive on the basecoat or it sticking so good that it will lift the base off when i go to remove them... i've seen this done before, but the decals they use don't seem to be "automotive grade" there almost like white stencils specifically made for this.

Thanks for that link! I've decided i'm just gonna live with what i got... i applied the decals to the rear bumper today and there is a noticable difference in colour between the charcoal i painted (the original colour) and the charcoal on the decals. Other then the colour being off, the decals went on perfect and straight... it took a LONG time to put this decal on the bumper. It was pretty difficult getting it to curve around the bumper

Yeah i've seen that car and it looks to be in awesome shape... it's pretty much the twin to mine! so do you plan on keeping it all original? atleast paint wise? Wow you've got quite the collection of cars there! What do you have planned for it engine wise?

Well it's finally warmed back up here, so i can continue on the car again!

I've ordered some eibach lowering springs for the car just to give it a better stance. I'm also considering going with aftermarket rims, but i don't know yet, because i wanna keep it as original as possible. If i end up going with aftermarket rims, im gonna get the exact same ones as my red Daytona has, but instead of the black i will get them in charcoal to match with the charcoal on the car.
Also for next summer i'm going to get the original motor fully rebuild with forged pistons and ARP hardware. I would like to start collecting all the pieces for a S60 kit (the S60 intercooler that goes in the stock location, turbo, computer, injectors, 3bar map) and i even still wanna keep the original airbox just to keep it looking factory.

Finished up the drivers door tonight... i primered and blocked it four more times to get it straight and it's now in its final primering, which just needs to be wetsanded when it comes time to spray the entire car. I then painted inside the door jamb, which ended up being lots of work too, because i had to do bodywork from someone closing the door on the seatbelt more then once over the years..

next i'm onto the passenger door which is just as bad!

Thanks! It's getting there one piece at a time.. hopefully it will be all finished by march, even tho i still wont be able to drive it till atleast May.

I decided to paint my T-top trim with gloss clear... i liked the look when it was satin (the way it was factory) but i like it much better how my Red Daytona is with the gloss black trim, so this one is getting the same treatment. I redid most of the parts already (as you can see i have to redo the other little pieces in this pic as well as the mirrors.. I'm also waiting on my NOS T-top door trim to come in the mail.
all i did was wetsand them with 1000grit and re-cleared them, then wetsanded them with 2000 and 3000 grit and polished them. In my opinion the gloss trim is gonna look much better on the car,

Thanks guys for the compliments! Just incase anybody doesnt know... doing bodywork sucks! :D

I don't have much to show, but the front bumper is finished... it got it's final primering last night and today i painted all the edges, which was alot of work in masking! (i masked it because it's PITA to wetsand the overspray paint when it comes time to wetsand the car for paint) The next thing on my list to do is the front fenders.

Bodywork finished.... there were no big dents in the fenders, so i just had to putty them where they needed it. The passenger side fender was a little wavy so i had alot more bodywork to do on it.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2821.jpg

I got the rear fibreglass tail panels finished as well... sanded and put in primer, then i based and cleared all the edges. (this pic is shown only based, not cleared)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2812.jpg

Tomorrow i will block the fenders out and put them in primer once more and then they should be ready for paint. I will also paint all the edges of the fenders and the top of the Rad. support. When i pull the motor/trans out to put the new motor in, im going to paint the engine compartment, but that wont be for a while.

This morning i blocked the fenders out with 180 grit and decided to primer and block them out again, so i blocked them in 220grit tonight and put them in primer for the 3rd time and now there perfect.

I also cut the windshield out tonight and found some rust from the previous douche that cut the window out and scratched the pinchweld,. it's not thru anywhere... i guess i got it in time because it's more surface rust then anything. The wire wheel should clean it up perfect... i already started cleaning it up with the wire wheel.

Thanks, yeah i cant wait to get this car finished!

If you've got any questions on the T-top trim removal just PM me and i'll help you out the best i can, :thumb:. It's really not that hard to remove... there's lots of rivets and tiny screws hidden under sealent, but as long as you go slow and don't force anything it should come apart easily. Be prepared to dish out about $600 in new seals and felting when you decide to remove the trim.

Tonight i finished cleaning up the pinchweld and then i sprayed on some 1:1 dupont acid etch (nasty stuff) so there will never be any rust coming back around the window frame! I also prepped all around the fender edges and top of the rad. support, so tomorrow night i will paint the edges and around the window frame.

After this i'm gonna remove the rear hatch and glass (not looking forward to this!) i wanna remove it so i can paint it properly and put a new molding on it.

Hey Dj, last spring I cleaned it up and detailed the engine bay, but never painted it... The motor and trans will be coming out soon, because I'm gonna get the original block rebuilt by your friend who owns the machine shop. The only proper way to paint under there is to remove everything, so I'm gonna wait till its out. (I should have done it the first time when I had it out, but I wanted to drive it last summer and skipped that step) The original paint in the engine bay is in great shape, but its not shiney, so its gonna look out of place if I don't do it.

Yeah when I first got this car the rear molding was falling out at the corners, so I pulled it off as well, but I personally don't like the rear glass without it because I can see the urathane in spots... The rear molding does not effect the sealing of the glass at all. Its more for looks and to keep the dirt out of that channel... Thanks again for letting me know about that seal, :thumb:

Oh yeah i would love a set of louvers for this car, but it has the rear wiper so i have to live with just window tint... do you know where i can find a set of T-top window scrapers? :D

I painted all the edges tonight, and earlier today i picked up a new windshield... i searched around for a PPG one and finally found one in the city for $150,. Most of the places i called today wanted $200+ for some offshore garbage windshields.

The IROC too has the rear wiper so a heavy tint will have to do
they actually made louvers for rear wiper cars but IMO they look goofy
I find clean window scrapers all the time and i have found 2 t top cars so far too so i more then likely will come across a set pretty soon and you are the first to ask
so the first set is yours
IIRC there was someone who had a NOS set for sale

Really? I knew where there were two sets of those louvers, but i never ended up getting them... That would be awesome if you could find that post! I've looked high and low for a set, but had no luck. Yeah they would probably just sit around and collect dust, but i usually buy and collect every daytona and part i find, haha. That would be awesome if you found the link... i bet they haven't sold yet because i'd imagine they were pretty pricey. Thanks for that other link too... I came across that site a while back, but forgot what website it was on. There's a lot of helpfull info on there, :thumb:. If you ever see what a T-top daytona looks like under all the trim and headliner you'd puke.... It looks like a backyard hack cut and rivited it togather. When is SDAC? Yeah i'll give Jesse a call here soon... i have to start gathering some parts for the rebuild like some .020" Wiseco pistons and possibly some H-beam rods. I'd definitely go if i get the rebuilt motor in the car, and i would really have to think about going with this current motor... i trust it, but that long of a distance i dont know. Ya, I don't know if I would trust that to make the drive. SDAC is in late June so you have a bit of time but it always goes fast. I have some T2 rods with ARP hardware I was starting to debeam. They are bushed for .927 pins right now so would need to be rebushed if you go with .901s. If you are interested I'm sure we could work something out. I also have 3 .020 Wiseco pistons :D

I'll try my best to get it finished by then... the body should be done by march, so that gives me three months to get her reliable, even tho i put about 12,000 trouble free HARD kilometers on this motor last summer and it's showing no sign of oil loss/burning, :eyebrows: I think it's one of those motors that just won't die! I'd be interested in those rods, but i think those pistons wont work for me... your motor was a 2.5L right? I'm building the original 2.2L which i plan on doing the S60 kit and keeping it all look stock under the hood... which reminds me, if anybody coming across this thread has a S60 intercooler for sale please let me know.

Tonight i cut the rear window out... what a PITA! This weekend i plan on finishing up the bodywork on the rear section (quarters, hatch and the 6" of roof) I also bought a new SATA 3000RP paint gun which will be getting used to paint this car, :D.

Yeah the paint is thin, but the factory sealer (the reason why the paint comes off our cars) is pretty thick and it must be removed completely or you'll have adheason problems again... Maybe not right away, but down the road. I don't know what that crap is, but too me it almost seams like its a laquar base (no hardner) sealer.

Thanks again for the compliment, :thumb: I'm scared to add up all my reciepts in materials for this paint job, but I know I've spent close to $4000 just in materials and paint supplies.

If you do all the hard work yourself you are going to save thousands! You also don't have to use expensive brand materials... you can use Duponts lower line of paint products which is called Nason. (Omni for PPG) since your car is white the lower line basecoat would not make a difference. I used Chroma-premier because my car is metalic and the more expensive paint has more pigment and depth. a good example.. a gallon of Daytona blue in Chroma-premier was $500 for just the base and another $100 for reducer. I bet a gallon of white basecoat in Nason with the reducer would be around $150. Same goes for clear... you can pick up some 4:1 chroma-clear (duponts mid line) for about $250 with the hardener. I wouldnt use Nason clear, but thats my opinion. I got the Chroma-premier clear as well which was close to $600 for a gallon. (3:2:10%) Things start adding up tho when you start getting primer, masking paper, filler, tape, sealer ect... again you can get cheaper materials. DON'T EVER BUY LACQUER PRIMER!!! unless you want your paint job falling off

I spent most of the day doing the drivers quarter. Tonight im going to strip the passenger side quarter and begin the bodywork.

Even tho its a daily driver (like mine will be in the summer) i would still recommend to strip the car... even pull the car apart yourself and strip it to bare metal and put it in a DTM sealer then bring it to your buddy... that way all the money you put into it in paint won't fall off again over the years.

I just added up my receipts from the autobody supplies shop... $3484.36 and i know i've got a couple more receipts laying around that i havent added up. This is still alot cheaper then any bodyshop would do it for and i guarantee i wouldn't get the car done with these quality materials... alteast not without spending a huge amount of money.

Got the passenger side quarter finished up tonight and in the first primering. It was pretty bad around the gas cap area, but almost all cars seem to be... i put a skim coat of filler around the gas cap opening and blocked it out, so it's nice and straight.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee186/Turbo_Rampage/CIMG2855.jpg

My goal this week is to finish up the passenger quarter and paint the door and hatch jams.. i also have to primer the hatch. Once this is done i can start assembling the car... the hood, doors, tail section, front nose and then comes the fun task of wetsanding the car for paint.

I really need to get the car restored since its on its way to sliding the down the slippery slope in condition. Its just to the point where restoring it wouldn't be painful but maybe in a year or 2 it could be.

I really need to get the car restored since its on its way to sliding the down the slippery slope in condition. Its just to the point where restoring it wouldn't be painful but maybe in a year or 2 it could be.
I haven't truly decided the fate of the car quite yet. Right now it drives well and its semi presentable.
I wish I could do what you are doing. But with college looming within this year I have to save all the money I can.
Keep the updates coming

Well im sure you'll keep care of the car enough in the meantime until you get a chance to restore it... i know what you mean tho on the condition worsening if you dont get on it right away. I got my car just in time! The paint was falling off the roof and hatch and the factory sealer was just starting to wear to the metal and get surface rust... im sure if i left it any longer it would have started pitting the metal. plus the urethane bumpers, wing extensions and ground effects on these cars like to deteriorate pretty fast if they start losing paint... i had to replace the drivers side wing extension on this car because it was rotten from the paint wearing away and the UV's and weather getting to it. you wanna sell one of those S60 kits? :eyebrows:

I dont have any updates yet... the passenger quarter still looks the same as the picture i posted up, haha. I blocked it and primered it for the 3rd time tonight, so its nice and straight! Tomorrow im going to start prepping the door jams and hatch area... and the T bar, i have to strip all the factory silicone and sealant off of it and prep it to be painted gloss black like the trim.

Turbo_Rampage

6hrs of removing silicone around the T-bar was enough to drive me crazy! Tomorrow night im going to paint it black (base clear) and then i'll begin prepping the door jams for paint. It's getting there, :D

Well i got it the T bar painted tonight and it turned out perfect, :D. I was really worried about fish eyes from all the silicone, but luckily i never got one... i used ALOT of wax and grease remover! haha. Tomorrow morning i'll begin prepping inside the doors.

My digital camera clearly sucks under neon lights, so these are the best pics i took.

Well the car still hasn't gone to the paint booth yet, but i've been working on things that were broken, like most of the brackets holding the front/rear bumper on... What i did was cut the original studs off flush, since they all snapped anyways. (leaving the head part of the stud on the bracket so i could use them to tap thru) and then i drilled them out to the appropriate size to use a M5 x1 tap.. There is more then enough meat on their to tap them. Then i picked up some new M5 x 1 bolts with a big washer. This picture is the bracket from the front nose, i will be doing all the rear ones like this as well.

Thanks for that compliment! Thanks! yeah i just stuck with the regular metric bolts, since it is next to imposable to find stainless fasteners like the ones i'm using.. plus i use anti-seize on everything i touch, so taking bolts off in the future is never really a problem, yeah this car is strictly a summer car.

Did you ever use my Shelby door decal reference for your car? ...i added the rear decal placements as well, there a few pages back on here. I also have to upload the reference pics for the "intercooled turbo" hood decals and how far the strobes start from the ground effects.

Hey, what kind of shape is that car in bodywise? im guessing you took the running gear and harness... is it still complete otherwise? If so, it might be worth for me to fix... i want a black one. Let me know. If it isnt worth fixing i would buy it as a parts car. How are the window scrapers?

It's still complete and running/driving but has just been sitting around. It's a bit rough but not too rusty, mostly paint peel and dirty inside. Yes we can make a deal. When you get a chance, look it over you can decide if you want to restore it or just for parts. I walked around it tonight and felt the window scrapers, they seemed all there, but it was pretty dark. Yes, 1989 T-top with leather. I hope you can make something out of it.

Hopefully this weekend it will be at the paint booth. I called a local powdercoating shop here and I'm bringing in my 16" pumpers to get powdercoated... I've decided to keep the stock rims and get them done in the chrome finish (will look like polished aluminum) this is going to cost more then aftermarket rims, but it should look really good! The CS emblem Is also getting a red insert on the center caps and should match the red pinstripe on the car well..

Yeah i wanna keep everything lookin' stock on this car, but do subtle changes like the chrome powdercoat rims, lowered and gloss black T-top trim i did... it should be a change for the better and look much nicer. Oh i ordered that rear window Channel kit for my car, and Johnny is awesome to deal with!

I'm looking forward to how they'll look, :D. My eibach springs should be here soon as well... i'm going to get P225/50/16 tires for the rims too. I've seen them on a Daytona before and the wider tire looks better.. I wanna track down some 1/2" spacers as well because the only thing i dont like about the pumpers is they sit to far in the wheel well. My aftermarket rims on my red car sit almost flush with the wheel well edge and look much better IMO and the spacers should accomplish this... i will probably need to press in some longer studs for this.

Well my 1990 VNT car has a MINT set of pumpers and they are all the smaller lip ones so i think im going to use these ones... the ones on this car are in great shape too and i already painted them the factory sparkle silver, so i'll just put these ones on the VNT car. I'm bringing them in on tires... for them to dismount them sandblast them and powdercoat them is $150 per rim and an additional $30 a rim to powdercoat clear them, which he recommended especially with the chrome finish. So it's going to cost me $720 to get them done. I'm not sure if the chrome finish is more or not...

Haha yeah i drove it this morning! it wasnt too bad because i was wearing a snowmobile outfit,. It was a 40km drive on the highway and the roads were pretty clean, so it made sense to drive it since flatbedding it was going to cost $200+

I spent the entire day wetsanding it and was there till 10pm tonight and i still have the rear quarters and hatch to do, then there will be a day of masking and hopefully tuesday night it will be in paint finally!

Here it is mostly wetsanded in 600grit.

hey are you painting the end of the t-tops body color?
they looks like its in primer too

Turbo_Rampage
03-01-2010, 01:01 PM
They'll be black, there just in primer... I haven't got around to painting them yet. I'm waiting for my new door moldings to come and then I'll paint them togather.. I hate mixing up a little base and clear for each little part.. I put the T-tops on for the drive to the paintbooth to help with the wind and to help me from completly freezing!

I notice your painting the front clip one the car, aren't you suppose to paint it seperatly with a flex agent, and so it doesn't crack where it meets the body.

I notice your painting the front clip one the car, aren't you suppose to paint it seperatly with a flex agent, and so it doesn't crack where it meets the body.

I put flex agent in the high build primer when i was prepping it because primer is pretty brittle. The bumper is reinforced with metal behind, so there is little if not any flex in the front bumper... i did that because it was warped and the only way of repairing it was reinforcing it from behind. The paint rep said i do not need flex agent in this clearcoat since its high end clear and its pretty flexable to begin with and obviously basecoat doesnt need it.

The paint rep also told me that flex agents are more for assembly reasons at the body shop (keeps the paint open for longer so you dont have to worry about cracking on assembly) and after approx. 6 months it disapates and its just regular paint... i dont know if it's true or not, but that's what he said.

I did my Rampage over 5 years ago and i didnt use any flex agents at all and there isnt a crack anywhere on all the urethane parts.

PAINTED FINALLY!!!!

My dad is so tired... it took 9 coats of base (a gallon and a half,) luckily i bought an extra quart of base... this colour is VERY transparent! But with the 9 coats it has so much depth, it looks beautiful! The clear layed out like glass too! this week i will begin the painful task of wetsanding it and polishing it.

Is it Metallic? are you going to seal it before basecoat? it probably wouldnt hurt to quickly go over it in 600grit... i'm pretty positive it wont show scratches, but it's not worth the risk in my opinion..

Thanks! how are you going to do that? you mean just fibreglass the rust areas? if you plan on doing full fibreglass quarters i dont think you would be saving any weight, since the original metal is so thin... if you need to repair the rust just find a set of front fenders and use them for the back... same arch and shape for patch panels..

That is the clearcoat that's wetsanded... in 2000 then 3000grit. You cannot wetsand the basecoat on metallic colours, because it will screw up the metallics, plus basecoat is so thin, it lays out pretty flat. I did wetsand the sealer before the basecoat in 800grit tho...

Hey Dj, my Dad put down three wet coats of clear (3 quarts sprayed on the car)

Here she is polished,. It looks perfect! These pics don't do it justice! My Dad spent 6hrs polishing it and it looks like a mirror... i cant wait to see what it looks like out in the sun!

I figured that's what you meant.. I was thinking to myself if there was any decals on my dash! haha

Yeah that decal really sets the car off i think! When you install it (or any other decal) do it with soapy water then you can position it properly and when its where you want it squeegy it off and wait half a day then peal the wax paper off... any decals will come out flawless if you use this method. Putting decals on dry is a bad idea.. you've only got one shot and they usually end up full of air bubbles! ...just thought i would give you this tip.

yes i will be installing all my decals with soapy water... putting on these strobes dry would spell disaster, since there so big, especially the door one. the pros use this method when applying decals, that's why they come out perfect.
