So my friend Yan (burnt_toast) bought another TM a month or two ago. 89 turbo voyager. Wasn't running so i was storing it at my place until his schedule loosened up enough to work on it, but he called me up and said it just wasn't gonna happen and I ended up with it. :thumb:

BUT i already have a turbo van (also not running/not finished) and a BUNCH of other projects so i was looking for a new owner. I offered it to a couple people here on the boards but didnt get any serious bites, until oddly enough my friend Mason (Strax22) decided he would like to have a van so he could buy old arcade consoles and bring them home from wherever. :thumb:

So with that decided i towed the van down to my parent's place so we could work on it.

Now i have to find something else to keep my grass from growing.

I knew this thing had some weird electrical issues, but we actually figured em out pretty quick. In the end, we had to rewire the starter, add some grounds, and remove 2 gallons of gasoline from the crankcase to get it fired up:confused:.

We heard a bit of knocking noise when it was running and it had pushed out the oil pan gasket when we cranked it over full of gasoline, so we pulled the pan, cut the balance shaft chain, blocked the oil feed hole and put some rod bearings in it and back together with a slightly used but good oil pan gasket :p No rattling noises and runs smooth!

We had to bleed out all the brakes because it didnt have any fluid in it. Probly has a leaking wheel cylinder but we havent checked yet. Needs a wheel bearing somewhere too. Also needs front windows repaired and has some cracked lights on the front but i have replacements for all that sitting around.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC06507Medium.jpg

Took it for a drive on wastegate boost and all seems well!

Put it away with great satisfaction..

We'll be working on it again tonight. Turbo Utility Vehicle will be road-legal and cruising south texas in no time.

You just always need a project dont you;) Something about wrenching till late in the night with a deadline looming makes it all that much more entertaining:D

Last night we took apart the rear brakes looking for brake fluid leaks and wheel bearing noise. Luckily the brakes themselves looked excellent with almost-new shoes and good looking hardware. The wheel cylinders were leaking so we replaced them. We also replaced the wheel bearings because we dont like plastic cages and bearings that feel like sand when you turn them.

So now that we have new brakes and bearings and grease and seals in the back, it should never have to be messed with again :p because rear drum brakes will probably last longer than the rest of the van... He'll get bored of it before they wear out again.

We also did some silly little stuff like replace a bent prop rod (had one) and put on temporary tags, checked all the lights, added oil, put the t1 intake box back on.

Then he drove it home! Still a bit of wheel bearing noise along the way so a front wheel bearing may be next. Unfortunately i only have 2 good replacements for each side so if he blows through all those he'll have to buy a press in bearing for $22 or something. GASP!

Gotta love good used parts. When I did the timing chain on my Dakota I didn't want to use my new W/P that I bought for the 5.9 so I put the good used one from the 5.9 on it. Hey it was in better shape with less miles than what I took off, lol.

Not faster than i can find parts cars for near free:amen:

scrap's about $6/100lb and cat converters on these cars are worth 27-42$ so if i can buy a parts car under $200 and take off a bunch of stuff i need, i usually come out even when i recycle the shell... its a fun, inexpensive hobby :thumb: And dont worry its almost always tbi cars:lol:

It's amazing how the wheel noise went away when I tightened the lugs on one of the rear wheels! :D

Just fixed the power windows, door locks, and mirrors. It was only 5 broken wires in the driver's side door jamb. looks like they just got brittle and snapped.

Right now it's very pleasant to drive and getting better every day. I'll post pics soon.

Well if you're looking for something in particular let me know, ive already worked 2 cross-country deals for whole cars and body parts and i generally know whats for sale around here at any given time :p

Mason is working on the van more tonight.. Apparently the wheel bearing noise i thought i heard is now fixed/gone (between replacing the wheel bearings and getting the lug nights actually tight).

Its just a knock sensor and a coolant temp sensor away from being a "fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battle station"

Soo.... after sorting out a wide array of cooling system problems (Thanks Vigo for finding me a radiator in New Braunfels) I made the three and a half hour trek to Houston for the yearly arcade expo! And also to drop off a 568 @ FWD.

Now for the real motive for me buying a van besides the implied making it ridiculously fast for a van.

Today Mason came over in the van to help me tear down the parts Shadow i bought, and do a bit of work on the van too.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC07606Medium.jpg
After working on the shadow a bit we inevitably wandered over to the van (way more interesting) and started to brainstorm. We ended up backflushing the heater core and purging the air from the cooling system so the heater would work (it does now). Then we decided to put on the ol' CenturionII's from Mason's 87 CSX which has better wheels now anyway..
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC07607Medium.jpg
Hello improvement! And how often do you see Centurions on a van?:eyebrows::thumb: Yes, the tires are too short.. will be rectified soon im sure.:bump2:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC07612Medium.jpg
We went back to work on the shadow, took damn near everything off it.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC07615Medium.jpg
Still need to grab the shifter cables and the clutch pedal..

Mason also picked up a cummins intercooler from me to make work for the van:thumb: and a Harbor Freight license plate frame.:p Oh and 2 extra 782 heads to practice porting. I tried to give him some taller tires too but he's pimping the 205/50s for now.

And you know you want those awesome seats for the van! You can't deny they would rock  Stop refusing freebies!

Anyway at the end of the day the van was cooler:thumb:

Minor update:

The other night I polished a spare set of headlamps given to me by Vigo.
I started out with 220 grit, then 600 and 1000. Then I used a foam pad in a drill to buff it out using some 3m rubbing compound. Which by the way is some very handy stuff! then to seal them I used a coat of Krylon triple thick glaze. The triple thick works great for pinball back glasses so we'll see how well it works on headlights which in no way are related. The end result was well worth the effort.
http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01297Medium.jpg

On the way to visit the folks for thanksgiving the heater core clogged up again. At least it only got down to 50deg. I remember reading somewhere that a person installed a strainer before the core to catch any debris. I'll have to venture by the hardware store to see if I can piece together something. A remote mounted coolant filter seems a bit overkill.

Backflush it with a garden hose. Flush the cooling system as well. Should be all good from there.

Vigo
11-29-2009, 11:39 PM
Well, we did backflush it with a garden hose.. got a bunch of junk out, BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! ...apparently.

Eh, enough flushes at 15 mins and $0 a pop will have it permanently fixed eventually.

whywoody
11-30-2009, 01:14 AM
Years ago I learn't a trick for helping back-flush rad's.
You hold the garden hose running into the bottom of the radiator and take a 3/8 airline with no end on it and also hold it into the bottom of the radiator. You then use your other hand to fold the airline in half to stop the flow, and open your hand for short burst to 'boil' the water and increase the pressure in the rad momentarily.
You need a good compressor to keep up,as it uses alot of air to do this.
Might help.

Vigo
12-01-2009, 12:37 AM
Well the radiator is brand new, just trying to fix up the heater core. It is not really clogged so much as full of loose junk.. it just needs MORE backflushing, i think. :/

Good tip though, sounds like something i would try:eyebrows:

Update! Free HID headlights and seats!

A buddy of mine had purchased a HID headlight kit for his Denali. Since he no longer had the Denali, he was nice enough to donate them to project turbovan.

Thanks AJ!

Since the new bulbs were a 9005 style iirc, I had to turn them into 9004 bulbs. Nothing a Dremel, superglue, and donor bulbs can't fix! luckily, it was easy to match the distance from base to filament for proper focusing.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01299Medium.jpg

I did the installation over at Vigo's place, and Derrick was there to pull the motor for his New Yorker.

One normal light and one HID.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01308Medium.jpg

Some modifications of the mounts. The track width on the Shadow seats were 1/2" narrower than the van seats. Time to slot!

New seats!

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01310Medium.jpg

Lots of progress updates but unfortunately less pictures. :yuck:

Installed a 2.5" exhaust system from FWD Performance with nothing but a looong 2.5" glass pack muffler. It's pretty much the same thing that is on the New Yorker and Aries; It's surprisingly quiet. The major benefit from this is that I am actually able to boost more than 6psi now!! :hail:

This was also the first time that Vigo got to use the new welder that he got for Christmas. :D

Also installed an intake from parts that my GF got me for Christmas.

I had made an auxiliary input cable for the factory head unit (which is ridiculously easy) and have been enjoying it quite a bit. Then I picked up a bunch of stereo equipment for free from my friend that used to own a car stereo shop. The van now has a 2.5" component set from Total Mobile Audio in the front, and a 4-disc in-dash CD changer from a 98-01 (?) Chrysler. I had to modify the face of the head unit to fit the square hole because it is one of the round units. It turned out looking pretty good! This unit had a similar 8-pin DIN plug on the back as the old unit, so I thought I'd try out my aux cable. BAD IDEA! here is the result:

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/IMGA0078Medium.jpg

That is a view inside of my XM roadie II, which subsequently does not work any more. I'm going to try to repair it.

The rear 6x9s in the van had bad tweeters but good woofers. The problem with all the factory speakers in this thing was corroded tinsel leads. So, I removed the tinsel leads for the tweeters , reinforced the leads to the woofer, and re-connected the voice coils of the tweeters. The result was a factory set of speakers that works like new.

The reinforced woofer leads:

removing the tweeter domes carefully:

The faulty voice coil leads!

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/IMGA0084Medium.jpg

I reglued everything with E6000. Which I cannot recommend enough to everybody. I've been using this stuff for years and it is truly awesome.

Also, I constructed an in-line heater core filter using parts from the home depot.

I bought the sink strainer just in case, but it was not needed.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01317Medium.jpg

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01318Medium.jpg

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01319Medium.jpg

I haven't installed it yet, but I will let everyone know how it goes.
Currently I am adding 4-channel preamp outputs to the 4-disc head unit for future expansion, and gathering parts for an aux input adapter ( forget paying $60+!). Oh, and not to mention changing the back light color of the head unit to match the rest of the car. Also happening soon is to install the original front seats in the rear as removable captain's chairs.

Late one Sunday night while I was making the 3 hour trek from the woodlands back to San Antonio a major engine malfunction occurred. Luckily I was about 45 minutes from San Marcos instead of 1.5 hours from nowhere. I called Adam and said that he wasn’t busy at the moment so he could come out and tow me back to his place. Another important thing to mention is that it was about 10:00 PM. I owe him big time for boring a chain from his land lord and coming out to get me.
So we get back to his place and I moved everything over to the Aires and drove it home. The whole trip in the van the heat wasn’t working, and the Aires was even worse with it’s firewall full of holes. A couple of weeks later I picked up a NA 2.5 that came out of the $100 Shadow from Adam. I took my time and built up the spare motor to my liking with the idea of just swapping it in.

Hey, look at all of the goodies in the trunk of the Taurus!

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01320Medium.jpg

Here's the new bock back from the machine shop. It was in great shape with a standard size bore.

Standard size NOS Mahle turbo pistons and FWD-P T2 rods.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01328Medium.jpg

Drilled and installed an oil drain back tube. It would have been a lot easier if I had a drill with a 1/2" chuck.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01327Medium.jpg

I decided to try my hand at head porting (in my living room).

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01334Medium.jpg

Nothing too crazy, mostly port matching and clean up work. It's just another 782 with turbo valves.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/DSC01330Medium.jpg

I had a spare T3 turbo laying around so I rebuilt it myself with a kit given to me by Adam. It was extremely easy. I drilled and tapped the factory 8v manifold to for the new bolt pattern.

We'll see how long the used head gasket holds up.

Finally the time came to pull the old motor out of the van and see what was wrong.

Even though the lines and fittings were stock parts (for a tII garrett setup), we still had to do some bending to get everything routed snugly. You can also see here that the exhaust flange is at a more upright angle. We had to modify the stock downpipe to bolt up to it properly.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01246Medium-1.jpg
We also had to hammer, cut, grind, weld, and otherwise modify the tIII wastegate actuator bracket to fit this app properly. No pics of the finished product.

Thanks for the extra pics, it wasn't until last night that I realized I didn't have any pics of the finished (or near finished ) motor.

Did some more work on the van on Saturday.. like replace a blinker bulb!

And also this stuff:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01641Medium.jpg
First, an intercooler thingy.. namely the bottom half of an old Cummins IC..
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01642Medium.jpg
Then a little aluminum plate we got at Lowe's for $6.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01644Medium.jpg
MAPP.. $7 a can.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01645Medium.jpg
We just left these running while we did other stuff.
Now this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jijW310xvp4&feature=related

Then after we did that..
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01646Medium.jpg
We put an air gun to it and didnt turn down my regulator at all!!:D
I didnt go crazy on it but i think we tested it up to 50 psi. We also plugged a hole in one of the tubes with the stuff too.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01648Medium.jpg
Now time for mockup and scheming.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01647Medium.jpg
We cut the inner halves of the bumper brackets off so it would tuck up partially behind the bumper.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk124/Vigo327/DSC01653Medium.jpg
Mason insisted we put a little reinforcement back on those bumper brackets JUST IN CASE. Stay tuned to find out if it helped..

Luckily, almost noone was injured. Our good friends Harness, New Motor, Computer Borrowed from Vigo, and HIDs made it through just fine. Unfortunately though, New Radiator has left us.. :(

I offered Mason my spare minivan in condolensce, but he dissed the long wheelbase harsh-like.

So now the search is on for a replacement short wheelbase van to swap the goodies into!

the youtube video doesnt work in the aluminum post you sent me so the post doesn't really make sense.

I am a bad example to you. Last summer I was running 11's on used 100k mile paper headgaskets that sat for 4 years in in a shed that I copper sprayed and then heat cycled. Shouldnt have told you about that :P

Did it leak? Mine originally leaked water when i filled up the motor but sealed up after I heat cycled the engine.
MLS are actually scarier to reuse because if something gets between the layers, you are screwed.

Actually my router decided to stop forwarding youtube until I reset it. Where did you get your brazing rods? I want to try playing with this ASAP.

Looks perfect for repairing cylinder heads and intercoolers. I want to try it on a few other things too :)
see how strong you can make the joints

Well, neither one of the used mopar headgaskets Mason and I have reused has leaked yet, BUT neither one got pushed very hard. Mason's van didnt go over 10 psi and my spirit didnt go over 11.

I know harbor freight sells the aluminum rods and i THINK that is where he got them.

I picked up the Alumiweld (tm) rods from Harbor Freight. I was pretty surprised to see them there.

Adam was being dainty with the air gun in the inter cooler, whereas I had it on full blast. Which was pretty scary in hindsight.

i did some failure testing with that aluminum stuff in college. with a good bond on some aluminum stock, the aluminum itself failed before the bonded area did.

That is VERY good to hear.. :) Because im going to try and build an intake with it ...

the aluminum has to be EXTREMELY clean. like baked and hot tanked and degreased and stuff so that the rod will stick well.

we used a tinius olsen mechanical stress machine and brazed a few pieces of aluminum together in different ways.... butt joint, overlap joint, etc. the "weld" failed on the butt joint but at around the strength of aluminum given the cross section we used. with the overlap "weld", the aluminum snapped before the "weld" did.

as for an intake, make sure you do a little additional bracing just in case.

Mason is going to swap all of the good stuff into the Woody van pictured above.

It's an 89 3.0/604 Grand Voyager LE with blue interior, rear ac, blah blah.

Soon it will be turbo swapped. I bought the van for $100 to get everything i needed for a 3.0 swap.. and the body will be passed on for free. And, at current scrap value the gray van carcass is worth about $200.. making the best of it :)

Well, I WAS going to swap all the parts into the LWB woody pictured above untill I spotted this in a local pick-n-pull.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/0605101547a.jpg

I originally wanted a 2nd gen. van, but was willing to settle. After seeing that one in pretty good shape, I've decided I want a 94-95 Sport Wagon.

Hopefully one will come by soon.

I think it may be worth it to grab that grille and bumper cover just in case. Theres not much else different on the outside other than monocrhome treatment.

looks like most caravans of that vintage have that same side trim, grille, headlights, and rear bumper cover.. whats really setting the red one apart is the bumper cover and blacked out grille with monochrome treatment.. should be pretty easy to recreate..The 93 i parted out last year had all this same stuff sans bumper cover. :)

I finally got some of the crappy cell phone pictures I've been meaning to post.

Here is the assembled wastegate assembly. It's a bit hard to tell what's going on in the pictures but we were able to make all of the stock lines work with a bit of bending.

http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp167/StraX22/0428102107aMedium.jpg

And here are the goodies I scored at the J-yard. Sport front and rear bumpers, Dodge grill, factory rear sway bar, and every single piece needed to convert it to a manual. I was fortunate that they had an intact 1990 van that was a factory 5 speed.

Yayyyy, Great find, as I am a pinball arcade game fan from the 80s as well.
I thought I seen a table top arcade game on the left side?
And that was a Galaga as well in there? WOOHOOOO...

When are you gonna open the arcade?:thumb::D:bump2::amen::nod:

Kimmyskunk

It's a trap!!

Soo.... after sorting out a wide array of cooling system problems (Thanks Vigo for finding me a radiator in New Braunfels) I made the three and a half hour trek to Houston for the yearly arcade expo! And also to drop off a 568 @ FWD.

Now for the real motive for me buying a van besides the implied making it ridiculously fast for a van.

Oh man do I love Tempest... Incredibly fun but HARD game to play right.
Tho 2 pinball ones i'd love are Bride of Pinbot, and Black Knight.

Well, me thinks we will have to start a new thread for this new van..

Stripped the engine bay out, now need to CLEAN it thoroughly!

Took the motor/trans out the top this time, something i hadnt done before, especially with the bigger 3.0. Turns out it is possible!

Dang...at least you got to see them crush it. The POS Sunfire I scrapped today was just carefully placed on a pile of other dead cars...I would have paid them to see them crush it to a pile of pontiac pulp.
