Been working the last month or so cleaning up a 89 TII engine that I'm putting in a "roller" Daytona. Boy did I ever underestimate how much work it would be make it presentable. Wire brush parts, clean parts with brake cleaner, primer parts, then paint. Every bolt and fitting that I could remove, I did. I've got a newfound respect for you guys that have restored a whole car!

Anyhow here are some pics of things so far...more to come as I go.

LOL I got a bench grinder with a wire wheel you can use! You wouldn't believe how long it took to get the crap off some of this stuff, plus wire brushing every single bolt, etc, etc...

Dodge Aries K

Heh, I'd go the easy way out and probably just buy new bolts :confused2:

Still, it looks nice. Shame you're doing all that just to unload the car... that's going to be a nice ride you might want to hold onto...

blk86trbo
10-28-2009, 12:06 PM
Thanks guys...I'm not sure if I'd call any of this pristine, but it should be relatively presentable.

In September I traded my CSXT for this and hauled it back from Ohio. Hope to have it together and sold before the snow flies.

Thanks guys ;)

is the orange hose with crimped ends the oil feed line for the turbo?

Good question...if you look at the front of the engine, there are two lines that wrap around the head and run towards the turbo. The small one coming from oil distribution block is the [get this] oil feed line, and the larger one coming from the head is the coolant feed line. On the back of the engine, the large orange crimped hose is the coolant return, and shorter orange hose underneath the turbo with the worm clamp is the oil return. It dumps back through the tube in the block and into the oil pan.

Well I started cleaning parts and getting prepared in late September, but I've really been hitting it hard the last two weeks because it's starting to get cold! It's got all the correct parts on it for 1989 (89 TII common block, 2.5" Garrett), plus a 3 inch cat back exhaust, rebuilt front end (bushings, tie rods, etc.), new rotors, calipers, pads, along with stainless brake lines.

From everyone's reaction the color combo with the T tops seems to be a big hit, but I kinda wanna hold off on an asking price till I see everything's ok. Probably gonna have to have someone weld up the exhaust since the downpipe I have for it is 2.5" and the Cat is 3". Also things like the fuel pump and all the stuff that I won't know the condition on until it's running.

Ha ha I know, but if you didn't see my post in the "Help" section, I've been having an issue with the fuel pump. After tearing the tank out, I'm pretty sure it's just some grounding issues. The fuel pump runs fine hooked straight to a garden battery. :)

With that being said, it's set me back a couple days, but here are some pics of today's progress. Check out how clean it is inside the fuel tank! :thumb:

Ha ha yeah those screws are corroded. The only things I worked on were parts that I actually removed, or parts of my own that I needed to install. And to be honest I went too far on the drivetrain, because it's sorta going to look outta place in the engine bay. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the car is defiantly above average in shape, but if I didn't stop somewhere then I would have been redoing the whole thing! The tranny paint is called [gulp!] Ford gray ;)

Thanks again for your comments, and be prepared to spend at least a month or so on the drivetrain in the Aries!

She ran today for the first time since I've owned it! Not sure what the fuel pump issue was, but after hooking everything up and making sure the grounds were good, she fired. Oh, yeah, it took a few minutes to figure out my distributor was 180 degrees out too. Still need to get the swaybar and the wheels bolted up, but it sounds great.

Tomorrow I might be able to get some shakedown runs in, but I have visitation this weekend with my boys and Football starts at noon, so we'll see :thumb:

Still working out some bugs...this 2.5" ID X 3" OD adapter to complete the exhaust is currently being shipped from Summit

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/wlk-41972_w.jpg

Found a power steering fluid leak Saturday night at the meeting after a little bit of smoke...so I bought a brandy new line to install!

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee39/blk86trbo/89%20Daytona/89Daytona002.jpg

Also there's an issue I haven't figured out yet. It drives nice and straight down the road, But when you make a very tight turn, there is a "clunk" coming from the passenger strut area. Then, depending on which way you've turned, the car will slightly pull that way. Sometimes it pulls slightly left...sometimes it pulls slightly right. Haven't noticed anything loose (I've installed both axles and I'm sure everything is tight).

I'm pretty sure once I figure out the noise, the alignment issue will be solved.

larger one coming from the head is the coolant feed line.

I believe this is backwards...

Hmmm...now that you mention it, and after a little thought, it makes more sense that the coolant line would be larger after going through the turbo to account for the heat expansion.

Hmmm...now that you mention it, and after a little thought, it makes more sense that the coolant line would be larger after going through the turbo to account for the heat expansion.

If you think about it, the water is pumped into the block low on the front side of cyl#1 by the water pump, and goes across and up the motor and out at the thermo housing. The coolant feed line for the turbo is pretty close to right where the flow from the water pump is getting pushed into the block.

Great job on the motor.. when my intake manifold is the same color as my valve cover i think im doing pretty well :p

Paul is a great stand up guy. I enjoyed doing business with and am very happy. The work he did to the car shows and the car runs out awesome. I slapped a dtag on it earlier and put some gas in it and went to get some pizza. The car drives great.
Thanks Paul!

Hey man it was great to meet you and your Father...I'm really glad to see the Daytona going to such a good home, I know that you'll take care of it :thumb:

Here's a pic of how my trip started out (4:00 am). There were a whole lotta accidents...cars and semi trailers littered the ditches!

Wow Paul. Already time for a new project. Looks like a nice find! Its kinda funny how cars are going back and forth from the Kansas City area.

Yes they are.
However the white car was in the middle of Missouri. I tend to attract td's from Missouri. So its kinda going back home in a way

Shoot its warmer in your area too and no snow on the ground. Better home for T-top's.

Sweet looking Daytona.
I'm still trying to find an '89 but have not found the right one yet.
I want a 2.5T/automatic one. All I find are 5 speeds.
Enjoy it and take care of it!

2.5t with an auto. Blown auto. Rust on the floors. Great starting point.
$500 bucks

Shes in good hands sir!
I drove her around again today. Man the car just runs great. My little brother who is about 8 years old loves taking cruises around the block in the car so we went and ran some errands. Gotta love having a d-tag. Hopefully over the christmas holiday I will get it licensed.
I am getting a quote on wednesday to touch up the faded parts in the paint and reclear the car.
Then I think the clunking noise is definitely a cv axle on the right side. It will be going on the lift for some lookin over sometime this week as well.
Definitely going to be a fun show car cruiser

Hell no lol.
I am just merely waiting for my cousin to get her stove, dishwasher, and microwave out of the garage so I can sneak the car in before my ma decides to take the spot.
I have the expedition for the bad weather driving.

Well Tuesday if the snow stops and I can clear the car off I will be taking the car to Highway Patrol for inspection and the DMV to get it titled and licensed.

Definitely get it in a garage or cover it. The key to preserving the trim and weather strip of those t-top cars is keeping it out of the element however possible. That stuff sure is brittle after so many years.

Yup I gotta clean out the garage ASAP its just I am waiting on my cousin to get her stuff out lol and you know how that works out.
The car is legal and I am getting a paint estimate soon to clean up the fade for now.
Later on I will have it fully resprayed but for now cleaning up the fade on the car would make it look much better.
