View Full Version : 1986 Omni GLH T2 conversion at age 18!

Well I'm 19 now but I started tearing the GLH up back in early summer before it got up to 100+ degrees every damn day.

Anyways, got the car about a year ago and it had already been torn down and didn't run like it was supposed to. Previous owner, well owner before the previous one, had torn it up and tried to do something weird with it. Long story short, it needed to run right again and since I always wanted a T2 Omni, I started collecting the parts.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n15/wytedrummer/PIC_0037.jpg

Fast forward about 5 months.
Finally got most of the parts needed to do the conversion, so the car was put in the backyard onto some jackstands where it sat for awhile while my Charger became my main focus to get it onto the road.

::Early Summer 2009::
Lets get down to it. Started with setting up a nice tent thing around the engine bay to get some relief from this Texas heat. Afterwards, a good friend down the street (schenkr88 on here) came down and helped with the teardown. First to go was the log manifold. Unbolted it and found out that the exhaust manifold had to be taken off in order to get the log off or something.

Well the turbo jumps up on the list of things to get removed. Stripped the throttle body and everything off and started to disconnect all the feed lines going to the turbo. Halfway through I start saying that it'd be best to take the exhaust manifold off in order to get the turbo out easier...so I sit down with the Haynes book and read up on how to get the exhaust manifold off. While I'm doing that, Ryan(schenkr88) manages to Houdini the damn thing out from the back of the log somehow.

::Mid Summer 2009::
The heat is way too intense outside to get anything done. I managed to get ahold of a TII compressor housing on TurboDodge from David Tobias(detobias on TD; great guy to deal with) so I can have somewhat of a TII turbo...plus I didn't feel up to making an adapter for the TI compressor. My dad and I figured out how much to grind off the exhaust manifold and turbo flange to clear the #3 runner on the new intake. Everything since then had been sitting in my room or in bags out in the Omni.

::October 19, 2009::
Decided that since everything is cooling off now, it would be a great chance to put everything on the Omni to see how it looks. I got the brand new gasket and took all the tools out to start wrenching. First up was the exhaust manifold. Put it back on there and now the engine doesn't look soo...naked:). Decided to go upstairs and grab the turbo and bolt it up to see how it looked in there.

FYI, the turbo isn't finished yet. Still need a gasket and then the 4 bolts that hold the wastegate housing/downpipe thinger plus I need to attach the wastegate.

After the turbo was secured, on went the intake, which basically just rested against the firewall and the top of the turbo. Its close to being complete, standing back and looking at it, I can imagine the good times to be had when it's all done. Can't wait to see a few "WTF just happened:confused:" faces in the rear view mirror:thumb:.

Anyways, here's a few pics of todays progress.

That is cool! So you pulled the intake and exhaust manifolds without pulling the head? Sounds that way. Very cool indeed. Saves a lot of grief that way, but seems tedious.

I would've if all the original stuff was there and if I didn't already have to replace the turbo(smoked like a chimney when we first got it). Idk if it will ever be a T1 log again but thats why I'm keeping all the parts that were on there.

Yep, never even touched the head...it wasn't as grueling as one would think, although there were some shared profanities thrown around due to some restrictive space, some hard to get to bolts, and of course sweating out bullets from the heat:nod:. lol

wait till it all has to be bolted down tight. You might be able to bolt the intake up with the exhaust manny on there, you might not. I've gotten lucky on one but 99% of them the intake needs to go on 1st, then the exhaust.

Body looks better than what i was expecting.. but thats Texas!

Most people on here really dont understand about the heat... Its hard to explain it to someone without actually physically hurting them as an instructional aid :p

Good comparison would be to go into the bathroom, turn the shower on HOT, close the door, let it get all steamed up in there all while wearing blue jeans and a heavy t shirt and taking a blow drier and turn it on to replicate the wind down here during the summer.:thumb:

Nice start. I lived in Houston for 4 years, no need to describe the heat. I was just back down there 3 weeks ago and I can say I didn't miss not being able to breath if you went outside.

Just a side note, are you missing an exhaust stud? And the next thing to upgrade is the shift linkage! Those plastic ends won't last long (neither will the 525)! Read this--> http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17264&highlight=linkage . It's not really that hard to do.

Oh I know the 525 isn't gonna last very long, for some reason its already missing 5th gear lol. I don't know where to get an A555 or the A568 from nor do I have the funds to get one here. As for the connectors, my dad has got a plan to drill a hole straight through the top of the metal stud thing and putting some kind of bolt through it with a large washer to keep it from backing out. Dunno if it'll work but it's worth a shot lol

Ill help you get a better tranny local. They're in junkyards down here and its also possible to pick them up from people who are into these cars if you ask around. You can defnitely find what you need in the local area if you know where to look. :)

Its possible to take a log car manifolds apart on the car but much harder to put the t2 style manifolds ON while in the car. : /

But i remember the first time i did a turbo starter motor i had heard it would be super hard and i got it done. I wont rule anything out completely..

But personally i have gotten to the point where i pull motors out and heads off rather than work in tight spaces being frustrated for the same amount of time. But i have space and tools and experience at this point. It's gonna be annoying the first time no matter what way you go.

Well I haven't updated this in awhile but nothing has really changed on the GLH much from the last time I posted. The only thing I've gotten to do is I cut into the plastic skirt thingy on the front of the GLH so I can slide the Volvo intercooler in enough to fit it where I want. I had the square extra body panel thats on the passenger side of the radiator support cut to allow the outlet side of the intercooler to pass and to circumvent more airflow through the fins.

What I still need to do is cut the middle support bracket and move it backwards somehow OR cut it completely and find some other way to support it around the intercooler. With the middle support cut out, the intercooler should line up flush with the body enough to where I can put the grill back on. When everything is mocked up in place you can't tell theres a monster IC hiding there unless you look closely:thumb:.

Today, Adam(VIGO) is coming over to pull my friends '88 Shelby Z to his shop where we're going to pull the engine, trans, and wiring for me while he gets everything else on the body. I paid $200 for the rebuilt engine:D. Only thing it needs is a new turbo and it'll be ready to drop into the GLH:clap:. I'll be taking pictures of the motor being pulled today and so I'll update this when I can.

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

So pulling...rather, dropping the engine took about an hour to do and I cant wait to get the turbo off and put this one I've been building on it so it can be dropped in the Omni. I know my goals for it is to make at least over 230HP with it on 18-20psi of boost. I know thats rather high but hopefully I can make it to that power level without any(major) problems.

I have cut through entire wiring harnesses with it. Its magic for all kinds of hoses: fuel, radiator, heater, a/c, vacuum, brake, and every other thing you want out of your way on a junk car. Sometimes even carpet and seat belts.

Bolt cutters are another miracle tool.

Ive become REALLY fast at dropping motors out of junk bodies.

Its time for some UUUUPPPPDDDAAAATTTTEEEESSSS!!!!

So today I went to U-Pull it to seek a K-member and control arms for the GLH. I had checked the junkyard close to my house(about 15 miles away) and all thats there is 7 L-bodies(3 Horizons, 2 Omnis, 1 Charger, and 1 Rampage; Charger's already gutted) but all of them, excluding the Charger, are automatics. I checked with the owner of that particular JY and the owner wants $150 for the K-member and control arms:confused:. I know right!?

Anyways, that was my only option then and I was gonna order a trans. mount from PolyBushings tonight.. BUT, instead of going to the JY locally, I opted to try U-Pull-It in San Antonio knowing they'd be a little cheaper(about $90 cheaper:thumb:). So my dad and I head over there and find a Horizon with a K-Member still in great shape so we started wrenching on it when I realize something as I'm under it.. ITS A STANDARD! :dancingbana: Now I don't have to get a new trans. mount welded onto an Auto K-member! I can just bolt this one up into the GLH and then roll it around to the front of the house to get the Shelby Z's engine swapped in and to take the T1 out.

Soo, tomorrow I will be bolting the new K-member up into the GLH. After that, I have work all weekend night shift, 6pm to 6am:(. But all thats needed for the GLH after the K-member is the engine swap(which I still have to put the turbo on the Z's engine before I drop it in), hook up a shifter, run the 2 wires for the AIS, and get a calibration for the thing:D.

BoostedDrummer
01-22-2010, 06:31 PM
::January 22, 2010::

So today I went out and cleaned all the grease and grime off the 'new' K-member and got it ready to put on the GLH. I wrestled the damn thing over my fence so my Labrador, Pepper, wouldn't run out of the gate as I opened it. Anyways, it took me about 45 minutes to an hour to get the new K-member in and man am I glad its finally in there:clap:. Now I have to go to work at 6 and work all weekend so I won't get anything done at least until Monday.

Monday, I'm planning to roll the car backwards out of the really big gate and turning it around to face the other direction so we can get my dads forklift to hoist the engine out. So thats the plan so far, get the T1 engine out on Monday and maayybbee get the Shelby Z's engine in the same day but thats a long shot it looks like.

::February 15, 2010::

So really I haven't gotten much done on the GLH besides making a list of things I need on it, diconnecting all the wires and removing the radiator. Lately I've been tinkering with the Charger tyring to figure out why it stumbles and bucks at 4psi.

-The Daytona Engine-
Thanks to a VERY GENEROUS donation from a source who shall remain anonymous, I recieved a complete T2 Garret in the mail about 2 weeks back. The turbo is now bolted to the engine ready for the first spool:D. Theres still the matter of attaining the drive axles for the A520 and I'm supposedly trading Adam(VIGO) a T2 compressor housing I have for a 2½ inch downpipe. After that is all squared away, then I can drop the T1 and swap the T2:D

::February 20, 2010::

The T1 is OUT!! Yesterday we finally were able to get the engine out of the car with my dads forklift and some extra helping hands. Ryan(schenkr88; former owner of the Daytona engine) and his dad came over to help with the process before I had to go to work at 6pm. The whole process went pretty smooth...ish. What was funny was that we went through the engine bay and found every wire that connected the engine to the body and removed it making sure that nothing would get snagged or hold up the process of pulling the engine out.. Well, it turns out that we had to remove the altenator to shift the engine the right way to get it out. After the altenator was out it still wasnt coming out, the forklift would just pull the entire car off the ground. WTF:confused2:. Then I saw it, the drivers side axle was still attached:nod:. Yeah, needless too say, we felt dumb:p. Anyways long story short we pulled the engine, put it aside and brought the Daytona engine from the garage into the backyard and set it down where it has been overnight since I went to work. Today, hopefully, the Daytona engine will breathe new life into the GLH.

Poor ShelbyZ, that was a nice one too.

You had to be there.. It was one of the nastiest cars ive ever bought. But overall we made the best of it, reused nearly everything on cars that were in much better shape. Parts from it will eventually be in like a half dozen south Tx TM's. Nothing goes to waste but the body, but hey, this is the 3rd rust free daytna ive parted and crushed. Everyone says they want em, but noone offers me money. Whereas for example someone in Mi offered me money for rampage bodies, and someone in Ohio offered me money for van body panels.. THOSE got saved. $$.

Well we kinda got the engine in. Although after wrestling it into place we tried to get the drivers side mount to line up right so we could get that one done since it seemed to be the most problematic... it was. Anyways, after getting it into place finally we noticed that the pass. side mount was off about 3 inches. Well we noticed after trying to adjust the engine several times that the mounts were mounts for the Daytona engine bay...not the Omni's:yuck:. Well we went ahead and just set the engine in the engine bay the best we could for another day.

Well we noticed after trying to adjust the engine several times that the mounts were mounts for the Daytona engine bay...not the Omni's

Well hey dont feel bad because apparently even if your car had a big money paint job and motor and you had been seen referring to yourself as a 'TIII god' this could still happen to you! :p

This post gives all the credit to my dad. Today while I spent most of the day in my room with my girlfriend(we were painting my room) my dad swapped over the engine mounts, fabricated a new trans mount, and securely set the engine into the Omni.

::February 28, 2010::

Today since the engine is now officially set in the GLH, I plan on drilling new holes for the radiator mount as well as moving the bottom mounting brackets over. The intercooler will be set in place also and some piping as well as the Talon BOV will be put together and piped. Still need to go get the axles for the trans as well as a shifter and cables out of a Shadow. I'm also expecting some CS pumpers to get here this week courtesy of midnitetoker:nod:. Updates later today:)

Today was eventful. We placed everything where it was going to be in its final location like the radiator and the intercooler. Mainly today though I just tried hooking the IC piping all together but only managed to finish the "hot" side of the piping plus the turbo intake. The most frustrating part was trying to fit a piece of old IC hose over the BOV pipe. Lets just say I looked like this (:mad:) x 10. Wasn't pretty.. anyways mom and dad came out back and helped out and I finally got the damn thing together.:amen:

Nah its a stock Talon TSi blow off valve, I just painted it blue. I put mine before the IC because I figured it'll make a louder sound when I let off the throttle because there's essentially ''more'' air in the pipes due to the air being hot. Idk if its true or not but I already have the damn thing in place haha

Wow it's been a month since I updated this. My bad. Well the only significant thing done to the GLH is that I got some Large Spline axles out of an automatic 1990 Omni, had them rebuilt 2 weeks ago, and installed them in the car today:thumb:. It's getting close:D.

All that's left to get it running is the exhaust, cables and shifter from an '89 Shadow, and a computer. Also still awaiting the arrival of four 16" pumpers from TN. After all the mechanical stuff is squared away there's the matter of all the sensors to be hooked up as well as vacuum lines. I also wanna do a High Boost/Low Boost switch but I don't know how and also I wanna get a Y-dump for the exhaust.. sorta like low boost(7psi) for highway and normal driving with a full exhaust(really quiet:thumb:), Y-dump closed, and then "Race Mode" with High Boost(20psi) and open Y-dump for track and "street encounter" use:D

Well today my dad and I went out back and decided to get anything done on the Omni. We hooked up the throttle cable and the clutch cable. The clutch cable/pedal is surprisingly easy to push down so I dont know if its disengaging the clutch when I push the pedal in all the way or if its still making contact.. eh, only way to find out is to start it and put it in gear lol.

Today I went out back and finished hooking up all the water related lines to the radiator. Then I went ahead and put the small shifter bracket back on the transmission since I took it off in order to pipe the the intercooler. Umm, also I hooked up the speed sensor cable and then I put the 2.5" downpipe up to the turbo and realized that it needs to be bent toward the back or cut and re-welded since it basically points straight at the Kmember.

Soo today a friend of mine and I drove over to FWD Performance to drop off the A525 and head from the orginal T1 engine that was in the GLH in trade for a GLHS Logic module :D. Sorry that this hasn't been updated in awhile. Some major steps to get this thing on the road have been made:thumb:. I sent out money to turbokid for the correct cables and shifter from a Shadow with an A520 in it. He said he would go get them out of his yard on Monday and ship the same day so those should be here by the end of this coming week. I also went to an exhaust shop and had them make me a 3 inch diameter downpipe from the turbo. It's no mandrel bent, its crush bent but I dont think this should have any major impact on performance.

Yesterday I took out the original shifter assembly and now there's nothing but a hole in the floor. I'll cover that up with a plate of somesort here in the next few days. Pics to come tomorrow, I gotta run and get my haircut and then work =P.

Also, to those who have been following, I ordered a set of four 16" Pumper rims through Tony (Midnighttoker) from his "good neighbor/friend" Rachel back in February for $280.. still have not seen any rims nor the return of my money.. getting pretty pissed off about it.:mad:

I think you need to yell louder about that one.. cuz its a crock of ---- and needs to be called out.

I dont think crush bends on a 3" downpipe are going to hurt you AT ALL. The 2.25" swingvalve AND the .48 turbine housing and even the stock wheel are all more restrictive than a crush-bent 3" downpipe. Got pics of it?

Also today I swapped over the wiring that was on the old T1 engine and put it on the new engine as well as swapped starter wires over so now the red and black battery terminals are back to Omni GLH configuration lol. The only thing left wiring wise is run those new wires for the new AIS and TPS to the Logic Module and I have to find a T1 injector harness since the Daytona injector harness plug is a different style than the T1 GLH's. and I have to find a T1 injector harness since the Daytona injector harness plug is a different style than the T1 GLH's.

Thats a easy fix! Take your T1 harness and remove all the wires out of the plug and swap that plug on to you 88 injector harness. The wires are held in with a small clip that is pretty easy to get out. Just make sure to study each plug so you get the wires back together correctly.

I don't know where the original T1 harness is :confused2:. I've either put it on my Charger or I tossed it.. I don't believe I tossed it though, it may be in the garage somewhere. If I started to look for it I wouldn't be able to find it, as it usually goes, you look for something and never find it but when youre not looking for it you find it. It'll just be easier I think to get a new harness, knowing me Id screw up the wires swapping plugs haha

I installed the cables and shifter, had to go to Napa to get some clips and we're going to Home Depot tomorrow to get some clips for the bracket on the trans. Oh, good thing I thought ahead and brought a glass of water out in the car while I was drilling the hole in the exhaust tunnel. LOTS of smoke occured after a few seconds of drilling lol.

I also got some horns off a Mercury Sable LS the other day and installed them in the Omni. I made an aluminum plate to help hold up the intercooler under the front air dam. Im trying to come up with something witty to write on it lol. Oh and I also installed the Adjustable Fuel Rate Regulator :). I put the grille and bumper back on. Looks good:thumb:. I just finished the final fabrication of the shifter cover:D. First thing I did was trace the original plastic cover and took some guessing on how high I should raise the new cover. Made a cardboard template and mocked everything up. I wanted to use a sheet of good aluminum but I didnt have any laying around the house.. so I used the next best thing I had. The side of an old computer:D:thumb:. I know its steel and it was a real pain to cut it. But I got it all good looking, put the boot in, slipped it over the shifter, and put it in place. Im thinking of putting 2 switches on the big space in front of the boot. One will be a high boost switch and the other will be a kill switch to the fuel pump.

Anyways, PICS!!:D

Fantastic. I knew it was close when i left.. but had a previous appointment i had to keep so had to leave.

Anyway, where is the external getting its fuel from? If you just put it inline with the stock fuel line you need to make sure the in-tank pump is also running, because the external wont be able to pull enough fuel through it when its not running to keep the motor happy under boost or load.

Congrats again.

Thanks alot man:thumb:. The external pump is inline with the internal one. Remember it would come on but wouldn't build any pressure? Well it still comes on fine and it starts right up when the external pump reaches 55psi at the rail.

Vigo

Yeh, its fine if it cant build pressure as long as its spinning because that minimizes the resistance to the external sucking fuel through it.

So I just got back inside from a big step for the Omni. It officially moves under its own power:thumb: I only reversed it down the driveway and then drove it back up but STILL! :D
Other progress we made today was we moved the external pump up to the engine bay on the passenger side shock tower. I ran a kill switch for the external pump so that in the event that it ight be stolen, the would be car jacker wouldnt be able to start it. Well, I take that back, he'd be able to start it but it'll only run with 10 psi of fuel at the rail unless you flip the kill switch and activate the external pump.
I made a plate for the A/F guage and the Harbor Freight boost guage in place of the ash tray. Will get pics tomorrow of everything:thumb:

I still see em come around in yards here every once in a while. A local friend just bought a full 523 swap out of a van including those pieces.

But, as with everything dodge made back then.. im seeing it less and less often :(

It looks newer than 89 or 90. I have one from an 89 Caravan and it doens't look like that.

Oh, thats true. 90 is the switchover year from 520/555 to 523/568. My 90 van has a 523 and that style of console. They continued making 523 vans until 94 or 95, i think, although as far as i know 568s only came in vans in 1990.

Anyway, thats a plain jane 90-95 5spd van console thats been trimmed (a lot) at the bottom to fit the contours of the omni floor, there.

Reeves- I got that off ebay for like $10 so it was too cheap to pass up. I did trim it a bit and paint it red/maroon or what ever you want to call that color.

It moves under its own power now! I think i've officially put 4 miles on the motor :D. We suspect its got a dead cylinder due to a faulty injector or maybe the harness we put on has a bad wire. We got the L shaped injector harness off of a burned Shadow turbo. The harness itself had one melted injector terminal thing. We cut the burned one off and spliced a new one in its place. Either we got it backwards or its burned higher up than we know. Anyways, the turbo sounds GREAT through the 3" downpipe. Thanks A. Nonymous:thumb::thumb:

I have gotten some nasty faces from the side-exit in the Aries. It was much louder as a TBI. One time i was right next to some guys in the drive-through lanes of a credit union. They pointed at the exhaust and laughed, but since they were foolish enough to have their windows down i gave them 5000 rpm of noise in the face and i think it probly smelled bad too because they made some ugly faces and rolled their windows up after that. You might say it was juvenile but i think leaning out your window laughing at someone's exhaust tip is probably moreso..:confused2:

T-tops tend to allow the noise to disipate so it doesnt have as much ear bleeding

Id trade the 15x6 crabs, set of 4+1, full size spare (crab 15x6.5 tho, cant tell by looking) with whatever tires are on them +$20 for the rad/ic.

Are the tires pretty decent? These aren't the crabs that came off Ryans Daytona are they? I remember one of them was butchered to hell with drills and torches.

Vigo
08-10-2010, 08:27 PM
the butchered one i recycled, one of them i sold to a guy in NM, one of them i gave to Derrick so he could have a full size spare for his Ny'er, and one of them is left which would be the 5th in this other set.

As far as how they look.. i know some are Dunlop Direzza DZ101 205/50r15 that i bought circa 06 or 07, i think they've got about half tread or less, they hold air but go flat over the course of a month or two.. and i think there's at least one tire that doesn't match and i dont remember anything about it. I will try to look at them this weekend. If you want to come by and see what ive got you're welcome to.

Im open to all sorts of trading since i have more wheels than i need.

Sorry that this hasn't been updated in some time. Today, I decided to pull the cap and rotor off to see if I could find a problem with my dead cylinder. Turns out that the wires that go into the cap were kind of dirty and one of them was barely pushed in. So, we pushed that one all the way in and while were at it, we went ahead and put a different fuel regulator on the rail since the old one was leaking. Also, my old pcv valve was venting to the atmosphere with a tube on it going to a tiny filter on the end. I decided to drill a hole in the intake tubing that sucks in air to the turbo and putting a little barb to run a new hose from the pcv to that. Started it and it still has a slightly dead cylinder. more later when we figure this thing out :)

Definitely still got a dead cylinder. The tip you're talking about is a resonated tip. Use that in your searches and it should narrow it down closer to what you're talking about.

I love those glasspacks.. They are the right size, like $24, usually in stock, and they make decently quiet car with nothing else in the exhaust! That exact part number is what my spirit and Mason's van AND Derrick's new yorker have on them.

Yeah, theyre awesome:thumb: and I dont know whats causing the dead cylinder. Its also still blowing a little white smoke.. I hope its not a blown headgasket..

Vigo

If its an original or old gasket thats NOT blown it probably WILL blow as soon as you put any decent boost through it. We blew the original gasket on the Aries as soon as it hit about 13psi.

Have you done a compression check yet? I still have that gauge here if you need to borrow it.

BoostedDrummer
09-06-2010, 02:18 PM
No, still haven't done a compression test on it. I have a feeling that it probably has a blown headgasket and its losing most of its compression on one of the cylinders. I don't think I'll be able to get the guage until next weekend.

So, I haven't updated this in a month. As some of you may know, I'm leaving for basic training for the Air Force in late November and won't get back until mid to late January. Anyways, the Omni is going to go through a major overhaul. After we get the car inspected and all that good stuff, we will be trailoring it up to FWD Performance in Houston, TX to build the engine up right. Following is what I want done to it and its a hefty sum of moneys.

-Venolia Forged Pistons .40 over
