Mine is leaking. Are there any precautions before I pull it off and reseal it? I have never done one so I figured I would ask first. This is the cover by the left front wheel. Thanks.

Only precaution is that there are actually a stack of 3 things that need to be sealed on that end. The cover comes off first, then there is a steel bearing support plate, and then there is the aluminum bearing plate. The cover bolts also hold the aluminum plate onto the case. The steel plate is bolted to the aluminum plate.

If it is only leaking from the end cover, you can just remove, clean, and re-install the cover as long as you dont un-stick the other plates removing the cover.

If it is leaking between the other plates or case then you'll have to remove 5th gear and the plates...

If you're gonna take it off, you might as well take all three plate off and RTV all of them.

Impact gun will help you get 5th gear off easily.

Most 5th gears are just held on with snap rings.

Also, use RTV between the cover and steel plate, and betwen teh aluminum plate and steel plate, but use anerobic sealant between the aluminum plate and the aluminum trans case housing.

Snaps rings on A525/520/555, nut and snap ring on A523/543/568.

My 89 A555 and a nut and snap ring.
The other A555 I put in has snap rings for both.

Cool...so they changed the input shaft in 89 then. I wasn't sure, since I haven't seen one myself. Thanks for the info.
