So I grew tired of my Shadow convertible and decided to build my third turbo car from a non turbo body. Jacksonville was seemingly fresh out of POS' so I drove to south Florida this morning and drug this one back. The engine may and struts/shocks from the Shadow are going on this car. These are the only two pics I took today, I will take more when I go to work on Tuesday. I'm hoping I can at least R&R the engine at work then finish it up at my house. It wasn't rust free like I was led to believe, but nothing that is flaking except the fuel lines that I can see so far. The odometer is showing 65k, the seats are nice in it, not sure whats going on with the headliner yet.

I was looking for pics of cliffs T-III silver Aries wagon but apparently didn't dig hard enough. I have a fresh short block on the stand that was for the Shadow but will now go to this car. Along with a Super 60 computer and 2 pc intake. All that was on my Horizon, swap #1. I need it running so I can start the v8 swap on the Dakota.

YOU TOOK MY IDEA. Well not really. I need to pull all the ---- out of my tona and stick it in a l-body. Any more rust free cars out there in florida? The tonas underbody is rotting away.

I was looking for a car to transplant the Shadow stuff into. I went and typed in Aries in the search box for Craigslist and it popped up. I've done the Horizon turbo swap and then the Shadow convertible swap. I was going to do a std 2 door Shadow for stock eliminator racing since the vert has to have a roll bar installed and it was an extra expense I didn't want plus the door and trunk lid had to be painted and put on and with 2 projects already and no time I don't see it happening in the near future. The Aries will be a relatively quick swap. Plus with the wife and 4 kids we can all ride in this, even though she said she won't I'm sure when its done and she wants to run a few errands she'll choose it over the 15 passenger van she drives. Here's some more pics:

She'll probably be surprised at how much cooler they can be made to look when you're done.

Good choice of body!

I'd like one but im holding out for a 86-88 T&C woody wagon for super cheap.. i'll be holding out a long time :p

Nice choice of dakota too.. 2nd gens are my favorite. I've got a 96 lined up but im starting to consider just turboing the 3.9 over the v8 swap.. bad gas mileage just seems like a worse and worse idea all the time for me. :o

theres a cheap and almost certainly rust free turbo shelby charger near me for $600... and you can probably talk Jason Hagger into transporting it for you back to michigan! :p

Yeah I found a really nice white woody for $1500 in Pa. This one cost me $300 and the sellers through in breakfast because I left my house at 3AM and arrived at theirs at 8:15. The engine is locked solid, but I have two short blocks to choose from. The SC sounds like a good deal except I live in Jacksonville Fl. Mopar318 might be interested in it.

Well got the head/turbo assembly, heat shield, boost controller, and I/C hoses off the Shadow today. I installed the head studs and oil pressure sending unit adapter into the fresh short block. I noticed that my new short block wasn't cross drilled was that just the turbo commonblocks that got that? This was a non turbo block originally. I don't care about having them I guess I though all common blocks received these. If all goes well I will start pulling the motor Friday after lunch at work and hopefully get the new motor bolted in on Saturday.

TopDollar69

The early TBI common blocks do not have cross drills. I think the 91-95 do, for sure the 89 TBI CB does not.

My Horizon floors were perfect. Hell even my GLHS that was sold new in Alaska, had a Colroado tag on it when I picked it up in Tx is rust free, lol. Problem is in our conversation about the car he told me it was rust free before I drove 5 hours to pick it up. Shame on me for not crawling under it. Nothing thats bad, just more work than expected.:thumb: Everytime I walk by it I get more excited about getting it running so its all good.

Pulled the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant. About a gallon came out of the hose and water pump. A bunch came out with the oil when I pulled the drain plug. Wonder if it over heated and hydrolocked. Head and maybe the short block will come out tomorrow.

Well I got the engine and transmission out today at work, I found the coolant leak into the oil pan:

More surprises were in store today. I went up to work to put the new engine and transmission back in the car and found that apparently the crank in the original engine is broken. I haven't pulled the short block apart but when I was spinning the torque converter around to get the bolts out, the pistons weren't moving. Anyway I got the engine transmission joined back together and in the car and all three mounts secured. Also cleaned the 21 years of grime off of the engine compartment:

Sean,
Keep up the great work! :thumb: Are you going to get a new crank for the new motor your dropping in? Take your time now with the motor and accessories out to clean the engine bay. Its kind of a pain but it makes it SO much nicer to work on in the future. I see you already did that and it looks like you've made some great progress. It's also awesome that your boss will let you work on a personal vehicle in the shop, my previous job let me do that. Now that its gone, I see how valuable it is.

New motors already in. .030 2.5 with new Mahles , final bore and hone with a torque plate. The crank just needed a polish. Rods resized and ARP rod bolts and head studs.:thumb: And yes I hate working on dirty engines thats why I clean everything while its easily accessible.

Thanks. The VC is just a cover at this point. I want to get it running now and then detail a little more later. Like the AC bracket needs to be bead blasted and the AC compressor needs to be cleaned. He said the air worked, of course he also said it was rust free. The laquer thinner takes the grime off quick and easy just don't rub too much as it will take the thin layer of paint off the engine compartment. I did it on my Horizons engine bay and the Shadow as well. Here's some Shadow engine compartment pics:

Thats the plan at this point. The wife and I have talked about incorporating a couple days into a summer vacation to Philly or DC with the kids. Brad and I mentioned it as well. It would be neat to get four or five wagons there.

The top side and interior was pretty clean, but it was originally a MI car so the underside will need some attention before it gets bad. Its apparently been wrecked as the passenger fender has been replaced and an inferior paint job applied to it.
I never knew you could get a wagon other than a T&C as a turbo. Guess that explains the vented hood also. Kind of wish mine had a luggage rack to permanently mount some luggage on. Hopefully it pans out and we can get the two in a group shot.:thumb:

If the area about 3 inches around the vent in any direction isnt messed up, its still good to put into any dime-a-dozen k-car hood.

Correct! That is what I did when my wagon got wrecked a little in the front. Had a new hood made. Still good, but that's why I wanted a spare, just in case.

If you want a hood like mine, get the messed up one and make one.

88 TBI cam from old engine.
Battery tray.
Relays mounted.
SMEC.
Engine harness started. I need the alt harness and injector harness still.
Valve cover cinched down for good, hopefully.
I think thats all.

Friday I got a little work done. Timing belts on, water pump assembly is on, distributors in, coil mounted and wired, and a connector repinned. I had to install the correct injector harness and alt harness. Next up is the alternator install. I'm using a stock w/p for now. Once all the bugs are worked out I may put my electric pump on it. I'm using an 89 minivan harness an an 89 Lebaron GTS alternator harness. One connector on the van harness to alt harness was different. I swapped the right housing onto the van harness but there's an extra wire on the van connector so gotta figure out what its for and if its necessary.

Here's the engine bay. I rebuilt and put in FlexFuel injectors and Rob's SMEC and of course the intercooler and 6 row trans cooler. Going to Spring Fling in Cincinnati next Saturday to race it. If I don't get my boost issue fixed I'll only have 11 psi though:mad:

Last night with the help of a good friend of mine who's more electrically minded than I, I was able to hear the engine turn over, albeit slowly. Also saw the reverse lights come on. Now to move a few more pins in a connector and then I can splice in the correct connectors for the headlights and turn signals and lengthen the wiper/washer wires. Someones offered up a rad i/c for a fair price if I want to go that route, but I have my eye on one of those TU units. :eyebrows:

Why was the engine turning over slowly? Your main ground cable better be hooked up at the head!!

Ive been looking for that pinout i had sitting around to scan it, but i cant find it. Sorry about that..

The grounds are all hooked up, the batteries almost dead. We got the connector re-pinned last night so it spins over with the key and the reverse lights light up when put in reverse. Now its time to run some fuel lines, do some wiring extensions, install a radiator and see if it starts or what needs work next. "I love it when a plan comes together."

Well bought a 99 4wd Durango with 68k on it in February. Its now August with 78k on it and after spending the day back on TM I have this desire to go home and work on the wagon after work. Hopefully the engines not junk from sitting so long since the car isn't garaged.

I won't give up on it but have had kid issues that take precedence. Like I said my hope is that once we buy a house with a garage my motivation returns. I built my Horizon in the street, My Shadow convertible was done in a garage so hopefully this one in a garage will re-inspire me.

The bad news first. I still haven't done anything to it. The good news is we made an offer on a house with a garage a month ago and are just biding time since it is a short sale. The baby is due in August and thats probably when we'll get the keys...just my luck. My 14 y/o is really interested in it. Guess at her age I was interested in any car I might have a chance of being given. I was dared to SRT swap it and that has piqued my interest so we'll see what the future holds.

So the whole ratty engine bay is killing me. It's not a show car but I like a somewhat clean bay. Well my mild OCD bit me. I decided to bead blast the w/p housing and replace the w/p:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j246/ACRTURTLE/Aries%20K/F4DED7B5-3F4F-4473-8E81-5C05FE428969_zps9sl1fud6.jpg (http://s82.photobucket.com/user/ACRTURTLE/media/Aries%20K/F4DED7B5-3F4F-4473-8E81-5C05FE428969_zps9sl1fud6.jpg.html)

All but two bolts cooperated. If I can't get them out this will be added to my jy list.

The rest of the stuff to be blasted, vc not pictured:

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j246/ACRTURTLE/Aries%20K/341BD3E6-9FF7-4FE8-A9A9-E3A599147B52_zpskpqjxjhx.jpg (http://s82.photobucket.com/user/ACRTURTLE/media/Aries%20K/341BD3E6-9FF7-4FE8-A9A9-E3A599147B52_zpskpqjxjhx.jpg.html)

Plus the alt adj brkt I need to get. New alt bushings ordered today as well. Once the engines buttoned up i'll start on the fuel lines, pump and tank.

Captain Chaos
04-13-2015, 08:32 PM
If theres something I hate, its something I don't like...

Went to the jy Sunday and had to basically pull two water pump housings to get one where all the bolts came out. Found one with a fresh w/p so for $13 I got a housing, pulley, pump and an alt adj bracket I needed as well as the tear drop part in great shape which I didn't need since I have the rbryant bracket. Sand blasted the alt bracket, idler pulley bracket, w/p housing and all the misc bolts. Painted everything not aluminum and now I just need to get new w/p seals, repaint the block and I can start to do the final assembly then start on the fuel system and hopefully start burning gas.
