View Full Version : Dodge 600 for "mexican Magnum" Conversion

I've found the perfect TD for my "Mexican Magnum" conversion :eyebrows:. This is an 86 600ES with 56K original "little old lady" driven miles on it. Came from down south so it has lots of clear coat fade and zero rust. The main differences from the Magnum are the lack of Recaro seats, excessive chrome, and the Landau vinyl top. I have begun blacking out the chrome pieces, but the top will have to wait until a later date. Future plans include a Turbo II conversion, lowering, and paint. More to come. Enjoy!

Sweet ride, that's one of the cars I still need to own someday. I don't think they ever made a 600 ES coupe though, only verts.

Thanks! Your right, it's not an ES. My mistake.
Does anyone know if the quarter window outside molding is the same on a 2 dr Aries as my 600 (for when I remove my vinyl top)?

Have fun when you remove the vinyl top as there is a fiberglass cap on the back of the car. Its not just a 2dr coupe with some vinyl crap on it.

Unless the last two 600's I torn down were different.

what do you mean a fiberglass top? as in there is no the roof stops there and the rest is fiberglass or thw fiberglass is in the vinyl?

He means they are like a RWD 5th Ave, or FWD New Yorker. If you look at a picture of a 2 door Aries and compare it to a 2 door 600 you can see the back part of the roof is longer. That part of the roof is actually a fiberglass extender piece to make it longer. It's all disguised under the padded landau top.

So I finally got my wheels on the car! These are factory Scion TC wheels. I wanted something a little different, that's why I went with these. They have our 5x100 bolt pattern, but the center bore is a little smaller. So I had a local machine shop bore them out to fit. Wheels are 17x7, offset is +45, and tires are 215/40 front and 215/45 rear. For those of you trying to venture away from factory Chrysler wheels, the width and offset are perfect, and mounted up without any spacers. No rub!

It's kind of slow going because there is not enough room in my garage to do both sides at the same time . So I have to finish the driver's side, then back the car out and turn it around to finish the rest. Can't wait 'till we get a new place!

...did you do any prep work? looks like you painted, that's it.

600superK
10-29-2009, 09:20 AM
Yea, sorry about the lack of detail. I pulled the cracking chrome strips out of the upper groove on the trim, then I sanded the old faded paint with 800 grit sandpaper. Then I wiped down the surface with brake cleaner to remove any residual dust and loose paint. I like brake cleaner because it evaporates fast and doesn't leave any residue. You have to be careful though, because it will melt/dissolve certain types of plastic. It definitely will remove paint, so sprayed it on a rag first and then wiped the trim down.

600superK
10-29-2009, 09:22 AM
The area in the pics where I stopped painting is as far as my prep work went. I have to back the car out of the garage and turn it around before I can finish the other side.

and later on I will sell mines (recaro seats in red)

The problem is in fact the spoiler you mention, they are very hard to find because that is the first thing that is broken when you go through a bumper, so it will be hard even here in mexico.
The good news is that I will be creating hoods, trunks, and some other replicas in fiber glass (racing porpouses :) ) so maybe we can create also that spoiler.

All the E class parts are a direct bolt in with the K cars. If your wagon has a bench seat you will also need the brackets from the floor pan. They are welded in, but can be removed with an angle grinder. The full length console with the arm rest has two welded in brackets, and the short one with no arm rest only has one. The bucket seats bolt right in, but you need the little fender clip thingies for the inside bolts so they have threads to screw into.

mmm no, Well...my magnum does have those seats so maybe I can take some pics of the bases, but belive it or not it looks like a cheap adaptation to the car :( the seats has their own rails, and those rails are being held with a couple of metal angles and screws, so it doesnt look like a factory seats (eventhough they are factory seats lol), but anyway I will take pics later and you will have a better idea.

That would be great! :thumb: Aside from the front air dam, I really am looking for the rear quarter window black trim for when I remove my landau top and the side door molding. My side moulding is real skinny where yours matches the rest of the bumpers. The gray recaros might work out for me because my wife's grandpa does upholstering. He could probably match the material and seams pretty close. Do you know if our seat base mounts are the same? I have two buckets in my car already. Also, any idea on a price with shipping to Oak Harbor, OH 43449?

Just curious, but why/when are you selling your red Recaros?

Sooooo, here we are almost a year to the day since the last post in my build thread :(.
1) I did not sell the 600
2) I did not crash the 600 into a tree
3) I did put approximately 75 miles on the 600 this entire summer

Sad , I know. It's been a very busy year (see my signature)! I have done some work on the car, though, including completing the tune-up with new plugs, Magnecor wires, and Mopar cap and rotor from FWDPerformance. I also completed blacking out all the chrome and trim around the car. I purchased a 1-piece intake with fuel rail and throttle body for the turbo II conversion down the road. Slow and NOT so steady, is my motto! Anyway, the car is hibernating under a cover in the garage now, and I will continue to collect parts for the future build.
By the way, I am looking for some Shelby specific items, namely a SHELBY vc and a Shelby steering wheel. Feel free to contact me if you have any of these for sale. :D

Over the last year I have finished blacking out the trim and lowering the front end to level the car out. I'm not sure if I'm going to lower it anymore, or not. I think I will drive for a while and see how it handles. It certainly looks alot better!

You know, it's been raining here for what seems like a month! I have not had a chance to go somewhere and take a full car shot, but I will soon. I don't think I'm going to waste my time on the landeau trim because I plan on removing it eventually. If I'm bored sometime I may paint it. As for the door handles I'm worried with it being a high traffic area that it will just flake off. Are they easy to remove where I could have them powdercoated?

A few weeks ago I saw a post of a 2dr LeBaron or something that had the top removed but not finished. Anyone remember what/who that was?

Vigo

Yea, you guys said it would be a mess under there when I asked about it last year. I just wanted the thread (thanks Dodge Aries K) so I could have a reference point. I am only going to attempt the removal if I can come up with original Mexican Magnum trim pieces. Hopefully when I'm ready I can get ahold of R/Tony to ship some of those items up here.
