Well, after all these years, I finally break in the 13's, and consistantly, :thumb: I also finally got to wear my helmet. The crowd went absolutely nuts tonight, I had track officials coming up to me, tons of people asking me what I had done, one guy asked if I had a V8-:eyebrows: another asked what I had, I told him turbo 2.5L when I was at the staging lanes, he goes, I have a 4 cylinder too, lol! Girls pointing and saying-cool minivan-:thumb: For the first time, had people ask where my kids were, lol!

Anyhow, same deal as before, 22 by 8-15 inch slicks, boost set around 23 psi, 2 gallons C16 to 2-3 gallons of 94 and 89 octane Chevron. The ONLY difference is I installed an S2 cam, I was running the S1 last times out.

Stage, launch, 2.0 60ft, track is slimey tonight, pulls hard but detonates a bit-CEL comes on thanks to the cal and I can feel her slow down when it comes on, still, run felt good. Shifted auto from 1-2 at around 5700 and I shifted from 2-3 at 5500, did this all night. Wasted a stock 05 Honda Civic, get my time slip and start screaming, 13.83@95.94 MPH, I can't stop grinning, finally, after all this time I finally reach part of my goals. The boost guage was at 25 psi.

Get back and take out one turn of the boost controller and out I go, this time, 13.72@95.67 mph, still getting the CEL light on mid track. Dawes was full yellow but EGT's were 1600.

Add 1/2 turn fuel, retard the cam 2 deg-so now its at 4 deg, and turn up the boost controller 1 turn, go back out, another 13.8@95.

put the cam back to 2 deg retarded-cam is ground 2 deg advanced, go back out, run a 13.8@96 mph. STill putting the CEL on and its slowing down at the top end.

Go get another gallon of C16 and nudge the timing back a few degrees, still detonating slightly and run some more 13.8's but now the MPH is 96-97 mph. Retard ig timing 2 more deg and advance cam a few degrees, knock off a 13.79@96.6 mph-playing with a low 12 sec SRT4, Play with it the rest of the night and manage a bunch of 13.8's, all roughly around 25ish psi. Boost controller is maxed out there. I got 8 runs in tonight and the last run, I figured I would unplug the MBC to see what she would do, hahhaaha, big mistake, hit 35 or more psi, guage stops at 30 and it went past it alot and cut out badly, ran 15.1, doh!

So, all in all, getting closer, wasted alot of Imports in the process, only lost once to the SRT4. Going to have to add a pet---- to my fuel line and drain out my gas tank at the track and add the C16 like the Buick GN guys do. I guess I will put the stock 89 cam back in and see what happens. She pulls good off the line but flattens out on the top end. Hopefully this will cure my mid track detonation or I might have to retard my timing more.

That's great to hear man!!

Is it just me..... or does anyone else feel a bit of pride in something another board member accomplishes??

I know that I won't do this intentionally..... but later on when telling this story to my buddies (or complete strangers) it will go something like this....

"I have a buddy w/ a turbo minivan that runs 13's in the quarter.... blah blah blah"

It's weird... you guys all feel like close friends to me. That's a sign of a properly run board, and great TD enthusiasts!

WTG Simon,

I am writing this to you from Baraboo, Wisc. I am at my brother in laws house. We are up here for a wedding, my wife's niece is getting married. But anyways I wanted to say congrats to you on your 13 second pass. I knew you could do it. Not the 12's are your next goal.

Thanks guys, I have to say it was one of my best nights, 3 years of blood, sweat, tears, and MONEY, lol! :eyebrows:

Just have to figure out the detonation issue, and go from there. Also need to figure out how to get more boost, my MBC is maxed out at 25ish psi. Also need to figure out if I am going to change out the S2 and put the stocker back in, my MPH hasn't really changed but obviously my bottom end torque is much better.

I would love too but A)No more money this year, B) I don't know anyone with that size slicks I could borrow.

I did notice Paul Smith did his 12.65 on the same slicks I have, :thumb:

I am going thru the 1/4 at around 5700 rpm so they probably would help but meh, next year.

Congrats Simon. Can I take some of the credit for the superstition aspect of this thread?

Once your top end detonation issue is solved, you should be running a better mph in the 1/4 which would also help you close in on those 12s. Give us a rundown of the 1/8 mile ETs and MPHs from those runs if you could.

Personally, maybe try backing down the boost and tune it from there. Wonder you didn't toast anything. Luck is on your side now:)

I will post both 13.7 runs when I get home.

Forged baby, thats why! plus when it started detonating, all the timing got pulled out and it almost stopped, then the CEL would flash and stop then the power would come back, and so on and so on.

Nah, this is my DD and I won't comprimise my comfort for a few months of the year. Its more impressive for me to do it full weight, which is 3450 lbs with me in it.

It has the full interior minus the rear seats, spare tire is a Lebaron mag with a 195/50-15 spare and it stays under the rear. No jack or sub box. I even keep my tow bar on for sh*ts and giggles,

simon! CONGRATS!! you are my hero!

you need to set up a on board cam and post up some vids of your turbo van street rod!!

might i suggust to help with your detonation problems, and they arnt all that expensive is invest in an alky kit... KJ (onefastbaron13) just got his installed and is running 25psi no problems... plus on the street if you want you can run low octane and just have the alky compensate if you wanted to do that.

and if anyone ever asks you why you rotrod your van... just let them know... cause its just that much more fun in a box!

congrats again!

Hey man, that means alot from you, THE fastest mini van owner, :thumb:

You'll get the 12's this year I know it. I had mine running on 10-11 psi two days ago and it was faster than it has ever been.. Well I parked it in the back yard and checked under it for leaks and it was leaking oil pretty bad, so now the engine is sitting on an engine stand in the back yard and I am changing the oil pan gasket and flexplate (yes, I broke another one, this time I actually spun the bolts in the holes and they were oblong, all this in 15 miles on the new setup) Then hopefully get it tuned thursday, then race friday night. My fingers are crossed. :o

Awesome job Simon!:thumb: I am really thinking that a '89 turbo cam is the way to go now. Seems like the bigger cams don't like over 18 psi boost with the way the head is designed, and the backpressure issues. I suggest to check the timing and A/F ratio the comp is giving with a scanner while driving at WOT. Maybe have a friend look at the scanner while you drive to be "safe".

Simon, Back your ignition timing off 2 degrees and ty it. What does it take 5 minutes. Run it and see. Put RN3c's in there for plugs gapped at 25-28. They are a NON-protruding plug designed to stave off detonation.

Jerry is correct about high pressure and current cam designs. Too much overlap at high rpm boost pressures. Hopefully that will change soon.

Quick fix for you (you ARE a shop owner). Put a .020" shim on there to lower the compression ratio a tad. That WILL help with detonation. I've run one at 22 psi boost consistantly before no issues.

2.5's and swirl are just prone to detonation. You can't run a 2.2 and 2.5L the same way with a swirl. Chrysler knew it and built different spark curves in there for a reason.

Simon, I highly highly highly recommend that you hold off on the alky injection until you do these things. You are masking the real problem, and you will only make yourself further fustrated messing with alky and fuel mixtures when you can make a few simple fixes and be rest assured.

I will try playing with the timing tomorrow night. Shim is out of the question, too much work AND I like the way it drives around town, which is 99% of the time.

Frank, alky is up and running, it works unreal. I need to go smaller on the jet but I was running 25psi on 89 octane with NO DETONATION. Friggin unreal.

I'll see what I can find out. I just have my stock battery mounting in place.

I'm didn't see anything about things like air intakes needing to be secured, etc...

Just looked, and my 'neutral safety switch' is an issue. I'll have to read up on that. Car starts with clutch engaged or not.

I will be making my best attempt to go. I had a bit of an issue with my car tonight that I don't want to talk about because it made me angry and it's stupid and embarassing, but my car should at least get me to work and back fine. Undecided if I want to race or not.

i'm going to but now it might be my battery thats the problem its in the spare tire well and it has an angle iron hold down thats welded to the floor but i just phoned missions info line and he said i need to have a 1/8 inch piece of steel plate underneath the car that the battery box bolts to. but he said i could bring it and try to get a one night pass.

i would hate to have your drag strip. Both dragstrips by my house has no inspection at all. You pull up get your number and race.:amen:

I would rather have a car thats safe than some backyarder who has no clue or is rushed for time and takes shortcuts, then either his car breaks doing a run and he crashes and kills himself or someone else. They stopped one guy for having slicks on aftermarket wheels and he barely had any thread showing on the nuts! :censored:

Yes, and even though good vehicles like Simon's van can make a mess, a poorly maintained vehicle is more likely to oil down a track and ruin it for everyone.

This has to do with the alky-water injection kit that was in one of Simons prior replys. I know this is a ford business, but I e-mailed them and they said there Mr. Freeze kit will work on any car, truck, etc. The price of the kit is around $180.00. When I get the money I want two of those kits to run on booth my cars. The web site is- www.andersonfordmotorsport.com.:thumb:

Best of luck to you Simon... I see we have another alcoholic! :eyebrows:

Once you run alky, you will wonder why you never used it before! Honestly, alcohol was made for turbo's!!:thumb:
May the God's be with you're drive train. :p
(I think my Jeep would drink beer if I let it!)
