View Full Version : Shelby Dodge at SAAC Show??

As most of the long time Shelby Dodge owners know, we have had a rocky history with the Shelby Auto American club. Sure, they 'started' SDAC and put out those nice SDAC Times mags but after that our relationship with them was pretty downhill IMO. Over the years when a Shelby Dodge owner has tried to particpate in a SAAC show/race, we have been disallowed:(

I accept their viewpoint that SAAC is for Shelby FORDS, it's their club and they can do with it what they wish. What riled me last year is when they invited "All Team Shelby Members" to attend their Los Angeles SAAC show at the Santa Monica peer yet when I tried to participate, I was flatly denied. I was late to the partty last year and didn't have enough time to mount a campain to change that. So this year, when they invited Team Shelby members to attend once again, I got in a little earlier in the game and had enough time to get some public opinion behind me. Not only was I able to 'change their minds' about letting me attend in the GLHS, the LASAAC club president offered me a free spot in the show:clap: Read about it here if you like, I especially like my line about Pinto's and Festivas http://www.teamshelby.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=45695

I weigh in at about post #30 so pick it up from there if you want to see how I got the FIRST EVER SHELBY DODGE invited to a SAAC show. It would be an understatement to say that I am Stoked about this show. My plan is to represent Team Shelby well, build bridges and be the 'conduit' between the Blue oval owners and ourselves. Oh, and I'll have plenty of free beer and redcups for any SAAC member that needs a little winning over:D

We're rolling out tomorrow at 6am for the 80 mile drive to Santa Monica and since i am not getting my clutch back till this morning (yeah, it is a week late but he had to build 17 spline hubs for it, turns out Tilton doesn't make hubs for a 568 trans:mad:) so if I get an hour of sleep tonight that'll do:eyebrows:

Well shoot me. Didn't sign up and I got a conflict with a big classic bike MC parts swap meet at El Camino College near LAX but I'll swing by on the rebound.

Alan were you showing up in your GLHS the last couple events?

I would not be surprised if they were calling your car the turd wagon because its missing the all important blue oval on the front.

Son of GT really should allow spell check to work for him. Congratulations none the less, and for the record my dilapidated GLHS did NOT try to attend last year.

Not me, Shelby Motorsports (Steve T.) asked them to expand on who that guy might be but they just blew off the question. Besides jason, I am pretty sure my S car has never been called a turd:p Rampage is another story:D

Trans is in, mounts are in, working on shifter/cables (converting from 555 to 568) next. If the thing gets washed in the daylight it'll be a miracle:nod:

Two great guys / cars representing us, thank you. Alan, everytime I see you car it looks better and better. Love it. Also like to Terrilinga sticker on the 86. Gotta give a shout out to Steve T. for looking out for Carroll's 1980's period with Chrysler. Steve is single handedly making the Shelby Dodge's accepted back into the world of Shelby Automobiles.

No doubt Mr T is working wonders. Today Forza and Senor Jones did the lifting. Me? I was supposed to be there. Went to a MC swap meet and got stuck there.

Lest you think it was Steve or myself that chose this show to corner the president of the LASAAC and berate him for not allowing Shelby Dodges into thier membership and good graces,:blah: think again. There was a bigmouthed moron from the CASDAC that refers to himself as the vice president of the chapter that inserted himself into the delicate relationship that the LASAAC club and the CASDAC were building with this show. Though he doesn't know it yet, there will be reprisals for the town idiot and I'll put forward the motion at the next meeting to impeach him from the VP position of our chapter. I don't think it will be a stretch to count on the five votes we will need to pass the motion.:amen:

Other than that little unpleasantness the show was a real success, a full field of great cars and the Omni based Shelby's were well recieved. It still surprises me when a car person (or more incredibly, another Shelby owner) says that they've never seen/heard of a Shelby Dodge before:confused2:. I had that converstion a couple times yesterday and actually *those* are the people we are there to reach:) One of the other groups I like to connect with is the 'I used to have one of these' people. First guy in that catagory was the 'birdman'. He brings a few Parrots etc to the pier and charges a few bucks when tourists want their picture taken with them. To earn his living, Parrot guy had to get there at 5am:eek: As soon as Forza stepped out of the S car, guy says 'Whoa a Rabbitt with big tires, cool' Kinda brought out a little chckle from us but then as he looked the car over some more he tells us he used to have an Omni. So I laid into him a little for not recognising another Omni in disguise:lol: Since he was a talker anyway he launched into a monolgue about he had rebuilt the motor in his 'from a book'... All the while his birds are givng us the HELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLO routine. Forza was hell bent on teaching one "Alan is a douchbag" or something close to that, good thing they moved us to another spot in the show or he mighta succeded:p

Car shows are great fun-for about 2 hours, after that it's like torture especially when you've had a total of four hours sleep in the last two days. Hell, I didn't even feel like laying into the 18pack I had on ice:confused: You know I'm not feeling that great when...

Here's the BOS winner as picked by the guest of honor, Rick Titus. It was a super clean 100 point car and all that but the color was kinda pedestrian IMO:p

I didn't think most of the Ford guys were to kind. The guy reading Caroll's history only mentioned him getting involved with Chrysler in 1982 and that there's 2 examples here. THAT was all he said about the Shelby Dodge history.:yuck: The 2 Dodges were put in the "special interest" catagory and not a Shelby catagory. And NO I wasn't the one who made an a$$ out of himself, nor was Alan or Steve. I do understand the mindset of these guys thu, afterall I used to be a MOPAR RWD only FANATIC too. Even if the LASAAC guys don't like the Dodges, they could have at least given the history of them to the the crowd. But on the flip side, all I heard was road race this or Leman's that and no mention of Drag Racing. Of course Ford had never had much success at the BEST motorsport of them all. Personnelly I think it's a waste of time dealing was the blue oval crowd, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Jason from 281Motorsports sent me this pic yesterday of the 'gang' at the show. Forza was off chatting up some Cobra owners so he didn't make it into this shot.:p

EDIT A cookie if you're the first to spot the S in the overview pic of the cars;)

We've heard from the LA SAAC president (actually Forza spoke with him) and despite the minor issues with one of our members, Randy talked about having our own class for Shelby Dodges next year. Very gracious IMO:thumb: All we have to do is get 5-6 quality cars to pre register for next years show:whip:.

Butch, the Shelby history speech that was told over the PA at the show was just his reccolection of the Shelby Ford days. If he doesn't know anything about the Dodge days, what's he gonna say?
