View Full Version : Holset the best choice?

I see a bunch of people use the Holset HY35 turbo for their projects. Is it really that ideal? Does anybody have compressor maps for these? I've heard people getting them brand new for $230, where do you find them?

Any likes/dislikes about them would be appreciated if you'd let me know.

well I like mine because it was 350 to my Door Canadian which was awesome for a brand new turbo, 4inch inlet, 2 3/4 inch outlet which matches up nice with my cummins I/C, 4inch downpipe and it's still internally gated for ease of exhaust routed, I will say however getting the 4inch downpipe to fit while keeping PS is going to be a PITA for you unless you get a good manifold made with the turbo as far to the driver's side as possible... that's the one thing I want to change on my car already and I'm 99% done just gotta do install my oil return lines then it's go time :)

The older ones "non front compressor outlet" had a smaller down pipe diameter. Frank has some holset maps in his Turbo calculators. :eyebrows: http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/map.php?company=3&family=1

I actually would be interested in boost threshold and what amount of lag guys are having on the 2.4s.

Yah likewise on that part too! Anyone with a Holset, can we get some feedback?

Where is the feed back? I'm thinking of going this route when upgrading the turbo in my Spirit R/T!

Well mine is now running, the power comes on VERY explosive. I mean the engine goes from acting like a NA motor to tire smoking power even in 3rd gear rolling at 35-40mph and nothing in between! I have not driven my car much infact I plan on putting it on the road this week and maybe get a better feel for it(2.5 16V hybrid).

You think if you advanced your cam timing it would help with spooling it earlier? Just a thought.

It spools by 2500-3000 aprox I was too busy watching the road, and aprox 9-11psi again was hard to tell cuz I was busy watching the road  Oh and base ignition timing is set to stock 12BTDC. It would seem to me this turbo is a perfect match for a 16V hybird, unkown on a 8V. However I used to roll in the turboford world alot(www.turboford.org) and guys there have had the same luck as me.

I have an HX35 12cm^ with a ported and polished exhaust housing and it hits full boost (14psi) by 3200 on my 2.4 with 8.6:1 compression. I haven't had a chance to turn the wick up any higher since I broke the input shaft, clutch and the case in the MTX.

The power that was made was great! I am anxious to throw in the built atx and see how fast it will boost to 20+ psi. I am curious to see if the "lull" that i experienced in all my other big exhaust a/r and wheel sized hybrids applies to the Holset during higher boost pressures. I fixed that by applying a 52 shot of the giggle gas.

So have there been any more progress, or reviews of the 16V with the holset?

I am still trying to finish the car.

my 2.4 with 8.6:1 compression.

You have Weisco's right?? Because they only make 8.8Cr and I assume that you got them from Bob's site(the only place that they are stated as 8.6 on the order page and 8.8 on another page of his site) and it is misleading. Just letting you know.

I have ordered 8.5CR custom JE's I have recieved my INDY cylinder head, now we're just waiting for the pistons to show up so we can do the machining and get everything together. ~~H

I found that out the other day when I was tallying up the receipts. Bob's site said one thing and Weiseco's said the other. The spec sheet told the truth!:D

My 2.5 with 2.4 cams, stock stratus intake and tb,log ex. manifold, large intercooler and hy35 in my 3.50fd 523 5sp minivan is awsome to drive.I have no grip in 1st after 5psi/2700rpm,same for 2nd @10psi and 3000rpm,and 3rd gear is fighting for grip at 12psi from 3000rpm.It pulls strong and clean right to 6000rpm which is as hard as I've reved it.I have 2.0 cams to try next, and more boost for the upper gears.bang for your buck is awsome with these holsets,it's hardly any lazier to build boost than the stock garrett I had on it before, and I have no boost control problems now.I also feel it pulls better before it is actually showing boost on the gauge than the old turbo did.
I like 'em!

I finally got the car to move today and I am happy to report that I hit full boost @ 4100 in second gear with the atx. I also found out that I have a fairly large boost leak that may be hindering me a little bit. My first indicator that I had a leak was a spike/goal of 19 psi and a fast bleed down to 12-14 psi. I will post back to this thread after I fix my leak and tighten the wastegate a wee bit more.

The HX35 I'm running on my hybrid spools great. I've only put about 5-10 miles on the car breaking it in with no intercooler but I was getting about 10psi at 3-3500 and that's with the wastegate flapper half open. Hopefully there's no boost control problems once I start winding it out but I only brough it up to about 4-4500 when breaking it in. I have a few odds and ends to finish up but it may take a while with the wedding coming up and other stuff that needs to be done around the house. here's a few pix.

I was shooting for having the car ready for SDAC but there were just to many little things to wory about and not enough time on the motor to chance the 750mile trip. It will be ready for sure by next year. I want to find a tow vehicle and tow dollie but who knows. I 'm running out of room for the cars I have.
