The funniest part is that so many of us including myself have pics like that I hardly notice anymore. I recall reading several "don't let the wife find a trans in the tub" threads in the TD days. I always thought those were funny.

LOL yeah she was a little taken back by my ambition until she rode in it, now she gets it. I don't even have a garage now, had to give it up for a 4th bedroom so had to use the dining room yeah. Hey gotta keep it real, totally professional;). Plus it was air conditioned. :eyebrows:

Word. 2.4L stratus runners. Gonna take her for a road trip tomorrow. 200 miles to arkansas. I have the overflow hooked up, battery bolted down, exhaust is done & all the way out the back instead of dumping, new hd shocks out back, 180dg tstat cycling perfect, everything seems in order. When I get back it'll be more tuning so I can get this thing to the track to see what she runs.

No problem. I will post more pics after the weekend. I haven't done any body work to it since I saved it from the salvage in 2006. The van is not much to look at but it will get some paint, lowered 2", and some 17"srt-4 wheels next year. I spent too much on the engine and trans already lol.

The van did make it up here to arkansas, about 200 miles no problems and I got 200 miles on half a tank so it's not too bad. I did a coolant mod on it because I had a bad hot spot on the #1 cylinder due to me moving the tstat to the other end of the head. I'll post pics of it too. The exhaust was dumping at the axle, I had it brought out past the bumper. It's a full 3" exhaust with a straight thru dynomax muffler, no cat, and it's nice and quiet cruising. New hd shocks out back made the sharp ozark curves a breeze. I'm glad to see it make this journey after sitting for 3 years.

Damn, I never got even close to those numbers, not even stockish, best I ever got was 17 mpg and that was babying the crap out of it.

How did you get 2.70 gears? I've had 2.60 for a few years now.

Took this pic tonight. I've done nothing to the paint/body yet. Figured it would get even more laughs by naysayers as is. Just made a 400 mile road trip with NO problems. This is after sitting in my backyard since I killed the engine in 2006. I plan on running these tires too when I hit the track shortly. My last best was 13.58 @ 100.05 on the 8v setup and these tires. Cooper cobras baby. 2.17 short time. :thumb: I'm hoping to see 12's on these same tires. I don't know of many mini's running 12's on street tires. If not, slicks it is.

It would be fun if you could get into the 12's with street tires but I honestly think no way, you just won't be able to launch it and by the time it hooks up, or try's too, the run will be over.

I had to launch in stages last time (8V). I launched with 12psi. Now it's more like 9psi gets me the same feel. I only need 6 tenths from my last best and now I certainly have the power to pull harder from the 1/8th on. Ran a 8.72 1/8th at 82mph on the 8v so I'm hoping to pull the big end a little harder.

Trouble is, with the 2.60 gear ratio and 26" slicks, I am barely using 3rd.

I'm tryin for next Friday still have some tuning till then to do. I will put some slicks on next year when I get a converter, some alky, and the roll control. She might hold up then. Well life has gotten in the way once again. My header cracked, got it welded up, had to skim .075" off the flange. Maybe I shouldn't have made a 304 stainless flange as most use mild steel. I'm gonna run what I have unless it warps or cracks again. I did the .047" valvebody mod and it hits HARD in 2nd and 3rd now. I can't get the smec to control boost now so I may have to use the ol faithful 2 step boost controller. I am having problems with the tune too but full throttle tables seem to be close. I am a little worried that my stock (rebuilt) converter may frag the thrust washer but surely the all season street tires will break before I have serious issues?? I just want to make a handful of passes this year if I can get the tune right. Anyone ever blow the stock converter/thrust washer before? Power level? slicks? thanks

Coy

Bummer on the header but good work on getting it fixed,

I killed a stocker a month or so ago, and I've killed a few stockers over the years, plus a couple built ones, using slicks.

Its not the slicks that do it, its the power, but worry about that over winter and get some runs in now. Make sure you have a filter on the cooler line BEFORE the cooler, so if it frags, it won't plug or ruin it.

When does your season end?

I know rarely have I went to track and been impressed with what I ran. I won't go if it's not running right with 20+psi boost @WOT. Right now I've hit 18psi briefly and it likes it alot, had it up to 5000 rpm but I want to take it up to 6500rpm but patience is the key right now. I'm a little timid for the moment, I've had so many setbacks and I'm trying to chase all the gremlins around it's exhausting. :banghead:

I have the tune close now. Looks like I may make it out this Friday, weather permitting. I finally got to keep it matted at 6500rpm, very nice. I'll try to post some knarly burnout vids, the spoolup on this setup is insane. It's just instant, breathe on it and it's there. It sneezes all the time, even at 1500rpm cruisin if you let off the throttle, sneeze. Blip the throttle in park, sneeze. Pull up in the driveway, turn it off, get out and listen to the turbo spoolin down for 45 seconds or so. Very cool, very impressive to drive, it's difficult to tell it's a turbo engine because acceleration is instant. Now I have a problem with the coolant overflow. It's not getting hot. Stays around 180^. 180 tstat. As soon as I got it safe tuned at 18psi I took it to the track. I noticed the coolant overflow brimming. Never got hot. I've been battling this for 2 weeks now. If I keep the boost around ~10psi it never overflows. If I switch it to high boost, even for seconds, then pull over and check, overflow is higher, sometimes it overflows the catch can. Put coolant back in, run around on low boost, good to go. One thing I noticed is that the GT2871r turbo at part throttle will boost to 24psi @2800rpms, it hits so hard. WOT will stay ~18psi but boost is INSTANT. I suspect the mls head gasket is not sealing with the cylinder pressures that high at that low of rpm. There could be a problem with the surface finish of the block/head as well. I had them resurfaced, and looked good to me, but still could be a problem. I'll check the surface finish when I get it off. I think I'll run a 5 layer modded gasket too. Chime in, lmk what you think.

My guess is that the cylinder pressure is leaking into the coolant jacket, btw. I did a coolant system pressure check, held 20+psi for an hour. So my guess is that huge cylinder pressure is leaking into the coolant jacket.

Sounds like you might have lifted the head sometime during tuning.

Peak torque is where peak octane is required so maybe the 24 psi spike is causing a bit of detonation close to your peak torque area.

I usually do a leak down test with the radiator full and the cap off......you'll see bubbles in the radiator when you find the leak ;)

Thanks Terry. I did a leakdown test, cap off, no bubbles. It Doesn't leakdown much at all. I don't think it's leaking under low pressure like the leakdown test. Only very high cylinder pressure will it leak. It seals and stays sealed under lower boost/cylinder pressure.

I guess having to tear it down is not always a bad thing. I got the header off and found it to be warped AGAIN.:banghead: So I'll be sawing the flange off, and making a new mild steel flange. My advise is to NEVER make the flange out of 304 stainless. It likes to move too much. Looks like about .06" of warp to me. Exhaust was obviously leaking, left witness marks on the header side of the gasket. Maybe I'll get this conversion right with enough stabs at it.:(

#2 and #3 up on this pic. Definitely a difference in the color of #1 piston.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/DBBmini/DSC02618.jpg
Here I've circled where the #1 piston kissed the head. Oil caused detonation, heated up the piston, aluminum swelled up until it hit the head. Amazingly this cylinder checked good on compression and good on the leakdown test. No scoring on the cylinder, still has the cross hatch from the machine shop.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/DBBmini/DSC02616-1.jpg
Here is the #1 cylinder of the mls gasket up. Hard to tell from this crappy pic but the gasket actually bubbled from having a hot spot in the head. The new gasket will get punched out to the size of #3.

No I didn't. We tacked it all together then he beaded it all around. I think I'm gonna make another one and bead all the tubes up first, then tack and bead to the flange. Flange will have some reliefs milled into it as well, before welding. This was my first ever attempt at making a header. The next one I think I'll make it all out of mild steel.

stainless is a good material to use but you pretty much need to saw between each port flange to keep it from moving all around.

If I'd have sawed it, it would have closed up the gap, my bolt holes will not line up with 1/8" shorter dimension between the outermost bolts. That's why I think I should have all the tubes beaded together first. Like I said, my first time making a header, but I know the ports/bolt pattern will not match up with as much as the tubes shrank on overall length. With the stainless ells/tees I used I would need to add .04" to each port dimension to get it to shrink into port dimension after welding. Or at least that would be a starting point, one in which I feel would be on the safe side. All the old tees/ells were machined on the nuts for port dimension but after all the tees/ells were beaded up, the OAL shrank 1/8".

Yeah so far it seems like I should run 2 extra layers on a fel-pro set, spray sealant on all sides, torque the head studs to 80lbs.-ft. I'm contemplating whether to just order a full new set of pistons/rings. It would give me 3 spares. I'm now just building a new header from scratch, moving the turbo closer to drivers side so the DP will hit the tunnel, miss the power steering pump. Gonna try some 1-1/2" size sch40 304 stainless instead of sch10, gives me a thicker wall by .036". Mild steel flange. I gotta find why there was oil in the #1 chamber/cylinder. I'm still hoping for some suggestions..... Like 2.0L cams? Should I retard the exhaust cam/intake?? 8^? 10 or 12? Straight up?

Most likely rings, its very shiny at 6 o'clock or it could be coming in thru the intake valves like it was with mine. Is the intake full of oil?

I had excellent leakdown #'s and compression checked 140psi on cylinder #1. I took the head to the shop and mic'd the guides. Bout .0025" clearance on #1 exhaust, less than that on int. Not too bad. I think you may be right. The oil rings may not be seating right. The head checked within .001" flatness. I'll be poppin out #1 piston for inspection. The ring kit Cindy gave me was .03" over. I know FWD is fairly close to you and you can go down there and have it dyno tuned but in my opinion, no one can do a mail order cal as good as one you can do when you have access to your own car 24/7. cookie cutter only gets you so far. at that point you have to spend some significant time tweaking small bits or spend the cash to get it dyno tuned and then verified on the street to make sure everything works properly. as the street and a dyno load the car differently.

Thanks for your reply, yes I've watched all the tutorial videos, great stuff there. My tune was fairly close, but I detonated and lost confidence, I could never seem to get the idle, part throttle, full throttle tune right. It was either good idle, bad part, good wide, or vice versa. I may continue to try my own tune, there were several other things contributing to my problem. I'm such a newb at the socketed smec thing and this project has proven to be a challenge for me.

Interesting as in your trying a FWD cal instead of continuing to do your own. Nothing bad, just interesting,

What injectors are you running?

+40's, but Rob should be able to rescale it. Your welcome to mess with it if you want.

Sure I'll try anything at this point. Thanks Simon.

I am almost done with the header. I used the bandsaw to cut off the nissan flange and t28/t25 flange. Made up a mild steel stratus flange and reused the stainless t3 flange i made for the old header. I also used a bellmouth to go from the collector to the turbo flange. I'll be adding a gusset for support, and some final gasket matching. This puts the turbo slightly above head level and I can miss the ps pump with the downpipe and utilize the factory tunnel for the 3"dp/exhaust.

That does look pretty nice. It should be a good improvement.

Thanks I hope so. Really I just hope it all goes back together and I don't have to deal with warping flanges and leaking exhaust. I'm ready to do some body work, paint it the same black as my csrt-4, get some 17" nsrt-4 wheels, drop it 2-3, and spruce up the interior. :eyebrows:

Have you thought about cutting the flange on the head side this time? I have read that this clears up a lot of warping issues.

Yeah I resurfaced the old flange twice..:banghead: It was an engineering flaw on my part. Both times it warped more than 1/16". Once it was bolted on and warmed up, it warped. Flat within .001", bolt it on and run it for a while, uper warpage.

Oh and the head on the exhaust side was resurfaced. It checked flat within .001" as well (after being bolted on and running).

i dont think he means cutting the flange as in surfacing it....

he means cutting the flange so that all the ports are basically separate flanges. thats what prevents warping, even with stainless as all the flanges for each port are separate and then dont warp.

Nice looking header, there.

Hmm, the 2.0/2.4 have the same bore spacing as the older 8V's. Couldn't you do the exact same thing with a set of flanges from FWD? I wonder if it will clear the stock 1-pc intake? I might have to get me one of those for the Daytona...

Thanks Rob. I doubt it will clear the 1pc. Not much room there. A log style would probably be better.

Oh, ok. well if I would have sawed thru the old flange it would have moved my bolt pattern enough that it wouldn't line up to the tapped holes in the head. If I wouild have welded the tubes up before even tacking them to the header I would have realized how much it would draw. On this header the tubes were all welded up before going on the head flange, after completed welding it only moved .015", easy cleanup. I've thought about partially sawing thru the flange so the bolt dimensions always line up. I actually have my head dowel pinned from the cnc'd port location to match the header port perfectly. Anal.
