Ok, this is going to be my 3.0 Daytona build thread. I bought this car for $200.00 bucks.

I am not entirely sure which direction I am going in. I know for sure that I am going to purchase Megasquirt II and try my hand at some tuning. I don't know if I am going to swap in the 543 or keep the 604. My wife has never taken an interest in anything I have done concerning cars. She happens to love the Daytona and want to be able to drive it. Will she learn stick or will I keep the Auto..? only time will tell.

He are a few pictures of the 200 dollar Daytona..

Today's project is to remove the front struts. It has some broken springs and they were sticking into the front tires. When the car was started and put into drive it would stall. The original owner thought it had a transmission problem. That's why he sold it so cheap. I cut the springs and it seems to drive fine.

You can see how low it sits. I am going to be waiting for the sun to go down, to take her down the road. Just to make sure the trans is working properly.

I am looking for a left front fender and a set of window scrapers. If anyone has any connections.

Also I'm trying to find a wiring diagram. I haven't had a chance to get a Chilton's. I have a couple plugs disconnected on the transmission. I want to see where they go to.

Looks good! Wish I would have known you had that when you were in Cincy, I could have got you a fender. Hell I have a white front nose cone sitting at the house. Good luck and keep us updated.

Get some pictures of those plugs on the trans and someone can probably tell you where they go. Looks like a great deal and even better price~!

Here is a photo of the bad spring on the passenger side.

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv181/TwistedNoodle_1/Daytona/BrokenStrutPS.jpg

And this is what it did to the tire.

Doesn't look that bad. The other side is a lot worse.

Here is the new (used) shock installed.

I got a little crazy with the "never seize" but that's ok, it isn't a show car... yet.

Ok fixed. I had made a new folder on my photobucket page for the Daytona. So the link changed.

So now both struts are in. The front end raised up about 2.5 inches. I'll get some more pics in the morning when it's light out.

Here is the car raised back up to stock.

I though it would run fine afterward. It doesn't seem like it wants to go into reverse very easily. I have to give it a considerable amount of throttle to get it to move. Sometimes it moves other times the motor revs up and then feels like it just slams into reverse.. spinning the tires. Thats why there is mud/dirt and chunks of grass on the tire in the photo.

It might be hard to tell unless you know what your looking at. These three connectors were unplugged while I was moving the car around. I plugged them back in but no change. I don't know if they were unplugged for diagnostic purposes or what.

I don't know what they are, I'm guessing possibly (1) shift solenoid, (2) fluid temp or level. (3) Reverse switch ?? Correct me if I am wrong.

I am not sure what happened to this dipstick. Looks like it was shortened and re calibrated.

Does anyone have one of these kicking around their shop? I don't feel comfortable if this is someone elses cob job.

It's been a while but i'm 85% sure that Picture #3 is your reverse light switch....

I just took a video of the engine while I was driving it back and forth in my yard.

The engine rocks around real bad. I wonder if I just need some mounts. Are there poly mounts available for the 3.0?

same as a 2.2/2.5 polybushings.com

Sounds like that 604 is going to be a headache. I would definitely swap it but if the wife wants to drive it maybe use the 670 instead.
If you are looking for a fender I have what you need. I went to the yard today and pulled a bunch of parts off the daytona before they decide to crush it. I'll send you a PM. The other yard crushed their '84 turbo Z that I wanted the 4 spoke steering wheel from. They save the dumb cars and when a hard to find one comes up, they crush it within 2 months.

I put the Tona back together today and took her down the road (Shhhh.. no plates). It drives fine (not like the SL) but it shifts into 2nd gear, when it wants to. There is a pause where the trans seems like it is in neutral. I am leaning towards an electrical issue. Prolly the TCM or the shift solenoid. I wish I knew more about transmissions. I am going to order a book on the 604 to see if I can learn me some info.

I ordered some stock replacement mounts today. I am still not sure what direction I am going to go. I got a line on a true T2 motor today. So the 3.0 might be parted out.

When I drove it today it seemed really dogish. I was expecting a little more out of it than what it gave me. I know it's an N/A motor with 125,000 miles on it. But to make it a real performer might take more money than I am willing to put into it. We'll see tho. I still have my eye on the MSII.

I have no idea where this goes. I can't find the corresponding sensor. It comes out for the same loom bundle as the Starter.

See that waxy grease sh!t is coming off. After a few more cans of degreaser it will be good as new...well, almost...

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv181/TwistedNoodle_1/Daytona/Picture018.jpg

You can see where it lightened it up on the inside of the fenders, but is still dark on the shock towers where I haven't touched yet.

SDS (Speed Distance Sensor)? Should plug into the top of the extension housing on the trans.

No that's already plugged in. I think its a 2 or 3 wire. Thanks though. Anyone want to place any bets??

oil pressure sender?

gary, the starter is on the front of the trans/motor on the 3.0L. :)

nate, before you dump all kinds of time into the car, peel up the carpets and see how it is under there.

reason i recommend checking for rust is cause of the pic inside the wheel well. see the orange peaking from behind the undercoat.... start poking there in the seam sealer and youll probably find some rust behind it. i know i did on my 87 daytona.

This is the worst of it so far...

The driver side floor pan I think it is probably fixable.

yeah thats fixable. just start cutting, making patches and then weld some new metal in. if you can get to my house with the car, you can use my welder if you dont have access to one.

pull the carpet and hang it up and hose it down. i do this with most of my cars. :)

then i hose the inside floorpans out.

that's a one wire sensor so im betting oil pressure sender as well.

Anyway, on the tranny:

You need to get it scanned. Theres a blue connector on the underside of the driver's side dash that you can hook a scanner to if anyone has the connector. Many shops will have the connector but never use it if they dont know how to diagnose things.

2nd gear is default limp mode. It could be going into limp mode because of something as simple as a bad ISS or OSS, or even an intermittent loss of connection because of a bad pigtail, which is common on the early cars. It could also be a solenoid pack which is relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Twisted Noodle

Is there a possibility I could get my hands on a connector / software for an OTC scanner?

Well, my new motor mounts came in on Friday from Rock Auto. They always ship my orders really fast. So far I have been very happy with them. Didn't get much done this weekend because we had 2 parties for my Daughters 7th Birthday.

However on Sunday I did manage to fill the engine / transmission mounts with some polyurethane. I'll get some pic's up asap. My wife hijacked my camera.

Just FYI: I have been working on the waxy grease sh!t that is all over the engine bay. I got the passenger inner fender all cleaned up an it looks nice. I have tried GUNK engine degreaser, GUNK foam engine cleaner, and even oven cleaner.. For this application the GUNK engine degreaser seems to work the best on this thick sh!t. I'll get some more pictures up as soon as I get my camera from my wife.

Try some brake cleaner, it will take anything off. Purple power works good too. That rust don't look to bad. I could see the road in my old 90 daytona.

Twisted Noodle

Brake cleaner doesn't touch it.

my 92 has the same wire hanging by the starter and my engine has never ben touched so I will just assume it is for a option we dont have.

Alright guys I am going a different direction. Just for the simplicity of getting parts and running 2 cars I think it would be better for me if they had the same motor. I have a line on a SBEC and harness and a T2 motor. So the 3.0 will be parted out. Let me know if you want anything.
