'89 2.2CB T2 in an '88 shelby-z. the problem: car smokes like CRAZY at idle. only after its warmed up or sat for a few minutes. and only at idle. the smoke is oil. compression in 140 accros the board. brand new valve seals, new SS oil lines, and ive tried 2 different turbos. still smokes A LOT! any help would be much appreciated.

thanks
kyle

A leakdown test would be nice to know the results of, but based on compression and other things you've tried -- My bet goes with valve guides.

Try Nicorette, or the patch.

My bet would be on the valve guides +1

Guides or oil rings.

Sounds like a turbo to me. Were both turbo's used? The oil ring in the turbine housing likes to stick if they sit. Sometimes you get so much oil in the exhaust it takes a while to burn off after replacing the turbo.

My guess is also the turbo...what do your spark plugs look like? I'd say if they are clean, it's probably oil leaking into the "exhaust side" of the turbo.

they were both used turbos. and the plugs are clean. no oil a all.

Most likely the turbo then.

Messed up PCV system will cause this too don't forget.

Check for blocked breather, clogged breather filter, hoses being sucked flat (Particularly under any "armoring") put in a NEW PCV valve if it's more than a year old.

if the plugs are clean then you have a bad turbo, if its bad enough then even swapping over wont clear the problem right away as there will be plenty of oil left in the exhaust system.

+1 on the PCV system. On my shadow, the catchcan wasnt vented correctly and it caused the system to back up and blow oil out every seal. I felt like James Bond with the cloud of smoke I left behind.

An obstruction in the drain from the turbo could do that too I guess.

my guess is turbo also

its been a while since i swapped the turbo. so its not in the exhaust. i thought (and wished) that too. the PCV valve is new. but it doesnt go back into the intake. it just dumps out to atmosphere.

well that could do it, the valve spring and metering is biased to being sucked at by vacuum. When it starts smoking, loosen the oil cap and if you get a chuff and a cloud of smoke, that's what it is. Your rings also won't be expanding and sealing so well at idle with no vacuum in the crankcase.

makes sense. ill try something out with the PCV valve.
