I have an intercooler that needs to be shortened by about a foot. It's one of those supra intercoolers from ebay, and I don't want to frankenstein the thing in like some people do with our cars.

THE QUESTION

can I cut the end tank of of it, shorten the core, re-weld the end tank?

The end tanks might be epoxied on as there are lots of factory intercoolers that are.

that is a tough one, better off getting something else. It is going to take a bunch of
labor to get it to fit and not leak, by the time you pay someone 50 per hour or more
for at least 3hours or more...

+1 You would be better off selling it and buying a new one IMO.

I have a skinnier one, but it's a straight through. I don't want to use that. Anyone need an intercooler?

Nobody has really explained why it would be a PITA to shorten this sucker. You would have to weld in between all of the tubes to seal them without accidentally welding one (or more) of the tubes shut. Next the foot of material has to be removed from the tank before it can be rewelded to the modified/welded core. If it were just cut-n-weld the tank, not that hard. Get the idea? Pretty time consuming stuff for somebody that knows what they're doing.

I'm not trying to be mean, but that particular IC doesn't have a separator between the openings. I've asked about that one in particular. The main problem I saw with it was, the path of least resistance. The air coming in will, in my mind go IMMEDIATELY out and never really get cooled. It isn't forced to go from one side and back to the other. Mine isn't the best, but it is separated and the air is forced across and back.

That or the email where I asked the seller if there was a divider in between the two inlets and his response was, and I quote, "NO". :) No as in, there is not a divider in there. Literally, that was his response with nothing else. Guess he got that a lot.

It's be a shame to buy ANOTHER intercooler. I want to cut it down and use it.

Honestly, you are going to have problems having it cut down. The cores are assembled such that the end is sealed off with a plate from the core manufacturer. If you cut it down, it would be a pain to weld in little plates on every fin row. I think you would be better off buying another and selling.

Ah, I see. Or just cut up the front of the car to make it fit...:(
