Is there such a thing as .020 Mahles for the 2.5 T1? The usual vendors don't have any.

I was told, quite a while ago that you could only get them standard. But I was at a friends place a couple months ago and I'd swear the ones he had were .020's. I'll have to call him and see. He was all but decided to go forged instead, so he May have a brand new set.

I just sold 3 .020 pistons from a 2.5, not sure if they were Mahles or not. BTW .020" = .50mm, These pistons are usually advertised using the metric measurements.

Yes, you are right. .5mm over is the metric size. If you sold original 2.5 T1 pistons, then they were Mahle's.

Well that's the thing, I don't know if they were Mahles or aftermarket replacement. Sealed Power makes hypereutectic pistons for them that look just like factory pistons.

The 1st 2.5 I did used .020" over Mahles. They do make them. In 30 and 40 over too. It was the 2.2 Mahles you used to not be able to get in oversize. They did start making those though a few years back.

Any source for them?

Any machine shop that uses mahle pistons should have a catalog with the part #'s. Call around.

Mahle made 2.2 in std and .020
they made 2.5 in std, .020, .030. and .040
They were discontinued a while back and slowly all inventories have been used up. we only have a couple sets of std t-2 2.2 and that's it.

the part number you are looking for is 513130-020 if you are lucky you may find some machine shop that has a dusty set in their back room that were left there years ago. Mahle (now owned by Clevite) does not have any in inventory. Hopefully they will remake them in the future, but I wouldn't hold your breathe.

Cindy

For what it's worth, I have the Sealed Power hypereutectic pistons in my T2 2.2, they have around 25k on them now with no issues, running 14-15 psi.

I popped 2 sealed hypereutectic pistons at 15 PSI... Now running mahles with no issues

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to stay away from the hypereutectic pistons. I know, there are probably dozens of folks running them with no issues..blah blah blah, but from what I know about them I would rather have the OEM Mahle for my budget build.

Just go with forged and be done

Guess you missed the part about my "budget" build. If you are donating some, I'll give you my address. :thumb:

I understand the budget part, but if you have to do it all over
Again after popping a piston it would no longer be a budget. Wish
I had some to donate.

I'm only going to be running 10lbs of boost, hence I thought OEM Mahle's would do the trick. Is forged really necessary? How did the factory cars hold up then?

The aftermarket makes stock cast replacment pistons, IE Sealed Power, etc. They are just as good as Mahle and available too, ;)

Yeah, I know. I'll consider those as a "fall back" option should I not be able to obtain the Mahle brand.
I'm actually kind of surprised that "our" vendors don't list any replacement pistons other than forged. It would make my shoppin' easier, for sure!
