sooo, I'll try it again...Anyone have any insight as to whether the zip tube was cut off like this at the Whittier plant?

Bought this GLHS airbox recently and noticed that this seems to be the only difference from a regular TII daytona airbox. (Other than the mounting bracket)

I believe that yours was probably cut off by the previous owner.

There was a discussion about this a long time ago on the SDML. There are many GLHS owners (some original owners) that noted this tube was trimmed on their cars. Seemed to be more common on the 87's than the 86's but the assumption was that it was done in Whittier to speed up assembly of the cars.

I've seen this on about 5 87 GLHS's personally.

Having worked on several S-cars for people, I've seen this on all of them. The intake tube from the box to the turbo also had about an inch cut off of it.

I know its not an "S", but my 17k mile CSX airbox was trimmed/editted the same way

Thanks guys,
I thought it might be done at the factory, but it does surprise me how much some of the stuff they did just barely qualifies as hacked up...from the way they cut out the drip tray on the hood to the way this airbox was modified.
This thing looks like they took a hacksaw to it. But at least they sanded it smooth afterwards!

Don't forget the radiator cap notch in the hood too. That is a hack job in every car I have seen.

Radiator cap notch???

Yep all 86 GLHS hoods were butchered both in the hood vent and the brace that runs above where the radiator cap goes. Also the fan shroud too. I get a good laugh out of all these cuts. Looks like no template was ever used. left up to the "artists" interpretation. Lots of people don't know about the radiator cap mod because it was hidden under the hood insulation. Seems like the added wiring mod for the 4 wire AIS motor was all over the place as well. Wherever the screwdriver punctured the grommet was where it was going.
Then there was the radiator core support that covered at least a 1/3rd of the intercooler, but that's another sob story...

My old '86 GLHS had the airbox cut like that as well; not quite a neatly though. I bought it from the original owner.

Another "butcher" job that I noticed is on the 89 CSX where they used a 1/2" hole saw to drill through the inner sheet metal under the hatch to attach the rear spoiler. The didn't de-burr anything and just spot painted the area.
