View Full Version : WHo has the widest wheels/tires on a L body?

Okay, I am getting ready to work on a charger here and and trying to figure out how wide of a wheel and tire combo I can get. I plan to cut the inner wheel lip on the rear fender for extra clearance, and I don't mind cutting the front lip.

What is the widest wheel/tire combo I can fit?

I know the omni has a little more clearance with the flared fenders. Anyone?

Propally not the widest
But I guy I knew sold Carl (doubletrouble) a set of 15x7 ARE 5 star wheels
They had 225 50(?60) 15's on them on a charger

I'm running 15x7 Fiero wheels with 24.5x 8.5 x 15 M&H slicks if that helps
No shims rubs on turns, 1/4" shim never touches ( on the front of course)
Mine has MP 1" Lowering btw

Do they rub any more than stock?

I'd say SMP has some pretty beefy tires on an L body :P

You might want to search the local boards for a fender roller. It would give you clearance with much cleaner results than cutting the inner wheel lip.

I use 8" wide wheels in front and 7" wide in the rear.

I was running 225/50/15's on my stock Shelby Centurions in the front w/ no rubbing at all. They will bolt on and turn easily in the rear, but they rub just barely on the springs. They would fit in the rear w/ .25" spacers.

I run 15x8's up front with Hoosier Drag Radials (about 9" of rubber on the road :thumb: ). I had the rims with offset just just enough to clear the lower stock spring perch. The only issue I have is the little "splitter" (or whatever it is called) in the rear of the wheel well hits when you turn. And the front inner fender about an inch in from the lip again when you turn.

I posted some pics either her or on the "Other" board. I'll see if can find the post for you.

Very interesting. What is the offset?

5.5" offset front and back. These wheels were originally on my GLHS (#276). I am the one that had them made. The front crossmember had to be centered so the wheels wouldn't hit the front air dam or the rear plastic wheelwell. Think that's close? The rear's were even a tighter fit. These wheels did fit completely inside wheel well without rubbing. This is also with MP autoX springs.

Decide what size tires (as in make sure you can get them) first, but i would think a 225/45-15 or a 225/40-16 would be fine unless you need bigger tires on the front for drag racing.

comeon, this is old news!! 16x7.5 et35 ~.5" space from the struts on the front, and ~an inch on the outside. rollin on old and busted 205/40s, i have 225/45 rs2 z212s i haven't mounted yet, i'll prolly jump to 245/45s before and use the 225s for the rear. tho it's tight back there. btw, theres actually more clearance to the transmission now. i dont' rub it anymore, and the 568 sticks out more than the 525.

oh ye with no flares REPENT!!!1 and use the power of stickier compound! here, this pic'll show just how much space there is! 4drs RULE! btw, this is pre-forklifting...

yeah heath, roll the fender lip, not cut it off. if you cut it, youll have a nice sharp edge to cut the tire rather than some steel that is folded back under and smooth.

you can make a plate that bolts to the hub, put a hinge on that and a threaded section of rod and a rollerskate wheel at the end. See image

here is where I originally got the idea... but that think is super expensive.

oh yeah, you might need one more hinge up at the roller skate wheel. :)

you can also widen the fenders with a device like this if you put some force into it. there was a guy that added inches to his fenders in a nova with a bottle jack and a board... He lived down the street from a college buddy in Beaver Falls.

or you can graph/weld new ones on from another car.

I saw a neon w/ newer grand am fenders flares welded on and looked nice

Aries_Turbo
02-11-2007, 03:17 PM
oops, i made one mistake. you need something that will pull the rollerskate wheel out towards you (when sitting facing the wheel/hub) like another piece of threaded rod and another piece of steel welded to the threaded rod... maybe not using a piece of threaded rod is a better idea and using the tube inside the tube like the eastwood piece would be better.

I believe you can "rent" that eastwood thing from tirerack.com.....sorta.

they charge you a crapload, then when you mail it back them send you back a certain amount of money.

I dont know how to do the "refund" thing either so you should call them.

From what Ive heard the paint will crack regardless of what they say........supposedly heating the paint helps prevent that who knows.

Well tirerack is supposed to give you most of your money back if you buy theirs and return it. You have to "loan" it.

you didnt happen to buy 4 and have 2 extra to trade for some 35 offsets for the rear?

No K-1's. I just have 17x8 ASA wheels. I think for the shadow, I am going to have to go custom 16x9 Bogart with a 15mm offset and huge fender flares.

I just want 255 to 265 wide wheels. It would best if I could get 26" in diameter!

I was going to get them for the Shadow, but didn't as I bought the Daytona at the time. I did everything but click the order button. Heck I even called people to get the full specs.

yeah, byuddy club's website doesn't list 15x8s either. bummer. very few 5x100 apps. i'll check to see if the STi wheels fit the omlet when it gets a little warmer. i dont' expect much at et-53 but they're only 17x7.5... so a15-20mm spacer would put them right where they should be. 20mm should be available as bolt on/to spacers but if not, that's a lot of stud...
my winter rotas are 17x8 et42 iirc i'll check those when it gets warm too...

That would be nice if we could get the STI wheels on there. The stock wheels that I have felt with the tires off, are REALLY light for a 17" wheel. by far the lightest 17" wheel we have ever worked with.

That is a good point. I wonder what it would cost to have the area opened up, and how much would need to be removed.

just came up from the garage:
17x7.5 16 lb BBS sti center bore ~ 56mm
15x6.5 17 lb centurion center bore ~ 57mm
old rusty N/A omni hub center ~56.5mm including rust.

boy that would look dumb on there... that brake disc is like a tea saucer. and solid. BLEARGH! i didn't try the saturns enkeis on the n/a hub..forget it. forget 4x100.

be glad. i had to unstack a bunch of tires and wheels to get these out. move bicycles and a hood, some palletes.. it's packed down there.

i think i'll jsut throw my hubs in a lathe while they're out and turn em down to 56. OR just turn out the 20mm spacers i'll need anyway to get the wheels to clear everything. problem solved. the hub centricity really only centers the wheel for ease of mounting etc. tho i wouldn't manually screw with it, as that's what tire shops use to "center" the wheel for balancing. the lugs' clamping force is what holds the wheel on your hub, and they're what takes all loads on the wheel too.

we miked some H&R(best on the market) wheel spacers and they were surprisingly more than a couple thou off. it's not that precise in there. i also just looked at the new BBS racing wheels the boys got for the formula car. looks like a shitty casting to me. but plenty strong enough. apparently.

Powermaxx - For my L body projects, I'm just looking for some comfort before I plunk cash down. Did you ever find those pics?

Offsets in the 20s on a 5x100/15x8 in a light wheel seem to be hard to find.
Offsets in the 30s appear more common? Clearances were . . . ? If you recall. Those Koseis cleared both front AND rear?
