View Full Version : SL 5-speed swap pics
On Thursday I got the pedals and shifter swapped in. Yesterday I pulled the motor and the a413 out. I am planning on cleaning up the engine compartment some this week, replacing oil pan gasket, head gasket, and rear main seal (among other things). I expect to have the motor and an a555 back in by the end of next week.

Actually easier than I anticipated. I have the "fat" gas pedal but I was waiting to pull the motor so that I can get to it more easily. Motor is out so new pedal will be swapped in today or tomorrow. Thanks, David

Looking good Dave! I'll have to stop by some time and check out the project. When do you plan on having it all done?

Thanks, I'll be working on it for the next couple of weeks probably. My target date for completion is the 7th but I am hoping to finish before that. I think that my over-heating problem was a plugged radiator. I have a spare but I am considering having the plugged one re-cored. Also, I need to order some stuff from Cindy (still working on a list). Stop by anytime. David

All of the parts that are going in are like new. The donor car was a mint 86 T1 LeBaron GTS. Not sure how many miles were on it because of the digi-dash but it couldn't have been many.

Oh yeah, I remember the thread...that GTS looked way too nice to be in the yard! At least parts of it were saved.
I'm looking forward to more updates!

More updates soon. I was happy to find mint parts for my swap but sad to see such a nice car in the YD. I try to check that yard every week or so since they cycle their cars every couple of weeks. There was another even nicer 86 T1 auto LeBaron GTS in that same yard a few months earlier. It had tan leather interior that was mint. That particular yard will not sell cars out of it either so I try to save the parts that I can afford to. The last time that I was there, they had (2) 85-86 Lasers, a turbo Talon (with injectors & IC & BOV), a turbo TSI, an 89 Ti Shadow, and an 89? (don't recall exactly the year) T1 Daytona.

Did you happen to save any of it? http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=478839#post478839

No, someone had gotten there before me and had pried the passenger door handle off to get into it. I did get the pedals, console, clutch cable/bracket, rear hatch struts, and some interior trim pieces. Wish now that I would have gotten more. A friend of mine got the front seats and glovebox/cup holder.

I did get a few pieces but not nearly enough (none of the colors matched my car). I still wish that I would have gotten the seats and had them dyed. It still makes me sick when I think of how clean that car was.

That looks like it went well. Let us know how you like it after it's been on the road for a while. I bet it will be awesome. Thanks for the pics.
Thanks for the positive comments. Today I pressure washed engine and engine compartment. Removed cylinder head and oil pan. Balance shafts come out and ported head with Taft S2 goes on tomorrow.

That sounds like a pretty good plan.
That sounds like a pretty good plan.
Thanks and I hope that you are right. The mitsu was great in the SL when it was a basically stock 2.5L auto. It spooled quick and so it was much more enjoyable to drive than the 2.2L TII that it came with. However, with the 5-speed swap and a few upgrades I think the little mitsu wouldn't keep up. Thanks again. Your comments and suggestions are always appreciated.
Motor is starting to come together after several issues (snapped ARP head stud, broken vacuum fitting on FM AFPR, and stripped lower intake bolt hole). Repaired the stripped hole, replaced the ARP studs with head bolts until I can order another stud and waiting on FM to send me a fitting for the AFPR. Also, started cleaning up the engine compartment. Pic of before and after below. Balance shafts are removed (BS oil hole welded up), lower intake manifold, ported 782, Taft S2, and 46 trim turbo installed. Still planning on having it running by next weekend. Feel free to offer any comments or suggestions.
The new fitting arrived today for the AFPR. Fuel rail with +40s and AFPR installed. Tomorrow I'll be bolting up the a555 and dropping it back into the car.
Motor is back in the car along with the a555. Seats and console go in tomorrow.

I had planned to start cutting up the stock ICs today but ended up working on adjusting the WG actuator instead. (mental note: adjust wg actuator before installing in the car) It is finally running like I expected it to. At 15 psi the car wants to go in a different direction. Still a little tuning to do but what a difference. Thanks for all the positive comments.
