What did the factory use for the passing that was glued to the bottom of the carpet? I removed it when I cleaned the carpet and I figure its probably best to replace the padding, but I have no idea what it is!
Anyone know?

It's called Jute.

Most Home Depots have jute padding, but you need to ask the carpet cutter guy....it's up on a high shelf instead of on the floor with all of the chopped foam crap. Pretty inexpensive too, it's sold by the square yard (I paid about $3.25-3.75 for it a few weeks ago for use in an antique car) and the roll is 6 feet wide. I restore car upholstery for shows like Pebble Beach and Hershey, Pa, and this jute is even nicer than the stuff I get from my suppliers. It has a smooth side like it was ironed.
