Looking to replace a 2.2 in a 84 k-car. when searching the salvage yards they ask if it is a 4 bolt or 5 bolt pulley. Does it matter if you are changing the complete motor? I found a great deal on a 2.5 I just want to make sure it will work.

I can't think of anything except for perhaps AC on an 84 which would be affected by what year short block you use.

Is your car an auto or 5 speed. If manual, you can use just about any engine as the clutch will bolt on all flywheels. If auto, the TC is limited to a few years and the flex plate doesn't interchange.

The 84 K-car is an auto trans. The 2.5 is out of a 89 minivan auto

'84 is an odd year for turbo motors being the first year and they made a lot of changes for '85.. with that said, any '84-'93 2.2L or 2.5L turbo I motor will bolt right in, you just may have to use some of the '84 mounts and brackets instead of the newer stuff. The '89 is a "common block" and a stronger and more desireable engine... on teh flywheel/flexplate side, the '89 has a 8 bolt crank vs. the 6 bolt crank used in '84 so try to get the flex plate with teh '89 engine... and you may need slightly larger injectors with the 2.5L vs. your 2.2L.

BTW, The crank pulley on the front of the crank was 4 bolt '84-87 then 5 bolt '88-'93 with '8 being somewhat unique.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! :thumb:

Ok, you need to swap out your transmission or change the auto pump and TC to run the 89 engine. If you swap out the trans, HIGHLY recommend if running the 2.5, make sure to grab the axles.

If you do run the 2.5, you'll need a new calibration and if your going to that hassle, might as well rewire to run the one piece intake.

Baring that, just swap over the manifolds, mounts etc and run the 89 belt setup as the waterpump rotates backwards from your 84.

+1 on getting the trans, but Simon you told me that minivan axles will not work in the cars. So he'll need 87-newer axles from any K based car.

Sorry, I meant grab some car axles, thanks for catching that, ;)
